Need party mix advice, ASAP

I'm making party mix for the first time and it was like my soup and kept growing and growing and growing. I have the pan from my 18 qt roaster about 3/4ths full. I was thinking the pan would fit in the oven but it won't. I know I can bake it in the roaster itself, but at what temp? I feel sure the 250 will be way to high. Would 150 to 175 be better?

I do mine at 250 and stir it every 15 min for about an hour. I say go for it!

Oven Directions Heat oven to 250ÃÂ°F. In large bowl, mix cereals, nuts, pretzels and bagel chips; set aside. In ungreased large roasting pan, melt butter in oven. Stir in seasonings. Gradually stir in cereal mixture until evenly coated. Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread on paper towels to cool, about 15 minutes. Store in airtight container

caliloo, do you do yours in a Nesco roaster? If it was in the oven I'd go for it, but didn't know with the roaster.

Melt dime size holes (stronger than drilling - and easier) with a hot bolt (use pliers). Please don't add compost to your MG soil. Add lots of bark or perlite. I'm afraid you'll be disappointed if you add the compost because the soil will be soo water-retentive. Triclopyr takes weeks and weeks of spraying to get it under control. In your case, glyphosate is the best choice. Buy the stuff from Tractor Supply under their brand Groundworks 41% glyphosate. Mix it per the instructions and add some plain old dish detergent to help it stick. It's much cheaper than the brand name Round Up and will kill CC. Spray it when you won't be getting any rain for at least a couple days. The hotter the temperature the better it works. All you need is a good mist on the leaves of the plant. From there the leaves take it into the root to kill it. Expect a week to 2 weeks to see results as it takes some time to get the herbicide from the leaves to the roots and with creeping charlie you have to kill the roots or the stuff comes right back.. For most herbicides including Glyphosate, they work best when the plant is healthy and actively growing. This way the plant takes in more of the herbicide straight to the roots. You really need the folliage to absorb the herbicide. Sounds to me like you need to seek out another master gardener.

Ended up getting busy yesterday, and couldnÃ¢ÂÂt respond. Christen, I love the idea of making our own ketchup, may have to look into that. I donÃ¢ÂÂt use it much, but DH does. Dave, we have quite an extensive solar system, we run our business here and also have 2 warehouses on the property, have only run out of power a couple times, and when that happens, we have a generator for back up. We usually have to run the generator on occasion just to keep it working, not because we need it. No hunters in the family, and I donÃ¢ÂÂt think DH would even eat venison. He is a cow man, which we have plenty of those around, however I donÃ¢ÂÂt think the ranchers would appreciate it! DH prefers to shop in the Ã¢ÂÂfreezerÃ¢ÂÂ section of the grocery store, as opposed to our freezer. Nila, the town was fun to build and we still need to add windows and doors to the different sections, but mainly it was to keep the deer and rabbits out. No, do not want tourists! Besides, itÃ¢ÂÂs not THAT special! Doing plain tomatoes and then doing whatever to them later is kind of what I was thinking. MyFamilysFarm, to bring electric in is out of the question, as we would have to pay for them to run it 6 miles. Solar was cheaper (although quite expensive still) and then we would also have had a monthly bill. The freezer is electric, stove, dryer and hot water on demand are on the propane. It takes us almost a half hour to drive that 6 miles! We have lived here for 12 years, and NO it is NOT for everyone. The town has 2 actual buildings down at the end, the Black Smith shop, which is more or less used for storage, and The Shady Lady is 2 parts, the front has some shelves for my seedlings when we start them, a small growing area, and the grill, the back half is seating with a little bar and a pellet stove for when we move the plants out there in the early spring. Here is a pic I took this morning, not really sure you can see the growth in one month. In a section you canÃ¢ÂÂt see, I have pulled my onions (size of softball) and put in some kale, beans and cukes, hoping I have time and the critters leave them alone! They got all my beans I planted in the spring and actually have gotten into some that I have out there now. I may have to put jugs over them.

I use drip irrigation too, about 20 minutes in the morning and again early afternoon. Container plants need frequent fertilizing because they get washed out often. I use municipal compost from a suburban town, it is less than 1-1-1, plus a time release fertilizer. This year it's Miracle-Gro Shake N Feed for Roses, I think it's 9-18-9, which should encourage good blooming. I also bought a fertilizer injector for around $50, it connects to the drip system; whenever it waters, it fertilizes at the same time, a very, very small amount. It's adjustable, I can turn a knob and change the ratio to give a stronger shot if needed. I generally use a hi-phosphorous (middle number) fertilizer early in the season, (10-52-8, 15-30-15) then switch to a more balanced formula with higher K (Plantex 15-15-18 w/micro nutrients, or a "tomato" formula like 18-18-21.) I usually do it in the oven, do you have a huge roasting pan? If I had to I would certainly give it a go in the roaster.... the heat is from the sides rather than the bottom, so keep stirring the edges to the middle

Maybe leave the lid offset a bit to let the steam out. You want it crispy.

Or....you can do it in the oven in 2 smaller pans.....
But the roaster will work....but leave the lid off and stir edges to the middle often...I would guess 250.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't think about leaving the lid off or at least ajar. I know when I've stirred it I didn't have an excess of the butter mixture anywhere to be seen and I tripled that amount. Looks like some of my friends will be getting some party mix for their weekend.....LOL.

What Lindac said. I do a triple batch in 2 9x13 pans. 250 degrees for one hour. I take them out to stir every 15 minutes and swap the pans sideways and front to back each time.

I haven't roasted it for years, since I started cooking it in a 4-quart Pyrex glass mixing bowl in the microwave. A batch of approx. 10 cups of dry ingredients takes less than 15 minutes to make and gets nice and crunchy.

If you leave the lid ajar, you probably should have the openning away from the control dial.

That's where the thermostat most likely located. With the lid ajar, it may not be able to keep temperature accurately.

The party mix turned out great. When I got on the computer to post the roaster was set on 150. I left it there with the lid on for awhile, stirring from time to time. I then turned it up to 250 with the lid ajar and let it go for a while longer. I have no idea how long I cooked it, but I know for over an hour. It's nice and crisp.

My sons love Party mix so much that I make huge batches of it using 2 of the largest size foil "steam table" kind of pans. This fills up two jumbo zip loc bags, one for each son to take back to college with them.

I just divide the ingredients between the two pans and mix with my hands. Then wisk and ladle the sauce over the top, mixing it in with two spatulas after each ladle full. Both pans go in the oven at 250. The pans are rotated between the top and bottom racks every 20 minutes (when they are taken out to toss) for 2 hours.

It always turns out evenly crisp and seasoned.
