Cat with Terminal Cancer

We have a 7 year old cat (Moo) who was diagnosed a month and a half ago with adencarcenoma (cancer) in his liver. We were told he had months to live, and that the cancer would spread through the rest of his organs eventually.

He is the love of my life (him and his brother). I have had him since he was 2 months old when I got him from the SPCA. I feel it is so unfair that he has only had 7 years of life, and I want to do everything I can to make the rest of the time he has with us as happy as possible.

He is on a bunch of medication because he now chronically vomits. He eats kitten food to help get some nutrients into him, but he has still lost over 5lbs since June. He went from being a 17lb cat to a 12lb cat in such a short time.

Every time he is sick it breaks my heart, and we do what we can for him - clean his chin, his paws, give him as much love as we can.

When he isn't feeling sick, he is the sweet amazing cat he has always been. He is so talkative, he loves to shower still (he goes right into the shower!) he plays with his brother and he flops for tummy rubs.

Just the other day I came home from work to find he had thrown up blood. It was the hardest day since we found out he had cancer. We took him to the vet and apparently they think he has ulcers due to all his throwing up. He is now on antacid meds to help that.

Just today, I have begun to find sores on his skin. Is this is cancer spreading to his skin? Does anyone know of anything that can be used to ease the itchiness of this?

I know we don't have a long time left with him, and when we have to make the decision, it will be about what is best for him. I don't want him to suffer, and because he has always done whatever needed to make me feel better - I want to do the same for him.

I just can't wrap my head around the injustice of this. He is such a sweet amazing boy, and does not deserve any of this. I have never met a cat as sweet, loving and personable as he is.

My heart goes out to you. I know what its like to lose a pet to cancer.Enjoy every minute you have with him and take lots of pictures, thats what I did. Hug's to you and Moo.

I'm so sorry.

I've lost some old guys & a couple of younger ones to flukes of disease, & what I learned is that it's better to let them go before you're ready than to keep them with you long after their lives are burdensome.

I wish you wisdom & fortitude & I wish both you & Moo the best.

Cat6 is not that difficult to terminate. It is somewhat more demanding than cat5e, but I would not trust someone who can't terminate cat6 to do my cabling anyway. I always have the same answer to questions like this: would you rather install cat6 and 10 years later realize you didn't need it, or install cat5e and wish you had cat6? Install more than you think you need during construction, unless it's cost prohibitive. In this case (and indeed in most cases), the incremental cost of cat6 is minuscule, because most of the cost is labor rather than materials (and labor is nearly the same for cat6). In most current applications it does not make a difference, but it does in some, and there may be more in the future. It is so much easier to run cable while the walls are open, that IMHO it's a complete no-brainer to "over-spec" a little bit to avoid regret and having to tear things up in the future. I've been through the project of adding cable to an existing home, and it is not fun. It involved literally hundreds of holes in drywall, all of which needed to be patched, texture matched and painted (not to mention the hours upon hours of labor I had to pay for the guys to fish cable through finished spaces).

My siblings, mother and I went through a lot of what you are going through with your sister. Our oldest sister was diagnosed in June, 2008, with inoperable lung cancer that had spread to her spine and shoulder. She had just turned 60 a few months before. She went through rounds of chemo and radiation and was on powerful pain medications. She lost her voice the month before she died, which made it even more difficult to communicate with her. She died November 14, 2008. It was too fast and left us all stunned and devastated. I would call her whenever I could, (not on chemo days, because they really left her drained) and also urge her to call me on her good days, as I didn't want to interrupt her if she was sleeping. I also sent cards and wrote letters, bought her special shampoo and lotions when her hair started thinning, soft pajamas that buttoned down the front, because her shoulder hurt too much to pull things over her head, etc. Don't hesitate to tell her how much you love her, laugh and talk about silly things that happened when you were growing up together. Don't be embarrassed to show your feelings, because with cancer, these words could easily be your last shared conversation. I kept a journal and one of the entries I made was on a day when we laughed and talked about Dancing with the Stars, of all things. Sometimes she might just want you to listen, or even to cry with her, which is okay, too. The day before she died, she had her son call everyone and tell us to come, because it wouldn't be long. She just knew. Most of us live out of state, but we all were there to be with her and spend the day with her before she slipped away. Take care. I'm sure you will do fine. HuntersMom and Obelisk: My sincere condolences. I have loved cats all my life and have been where you are many times. My present cats will soon be 18 and 16 years of age, and of course, I worry every time one of them gets constipated or refuses to eat. I guess we always hope that our babies will die at home with us there, but sometimes the choice falls on the owners. The only consolation is how much we and they filled each other's lives with love and joy and the fact that we are able to keep them happy until the end because we outlive them. HuntersMom: Like you, when I find myself catless, sooner or later, I get a new cat. I consider that it is like a tribute to the ones that are gone that they made me so happy that I want to give another cat a home. Sometimes I cry over a cat that died long ago, but at the same time, when one dies, the new one(s) help ease the pain. I hope and feel sure that your new kitten will do that for you after your dear Daisy's death. You did well to keep her going those extra months and to help her enjoy the time. Obelisk: I understand your feelings, too. Many people feel the way you do. You have been through a horrible experience that came upon you all unexpectedly. I am so sorry for your loss, and especially because you apparently didn't get to share your cat's life for many years, the way it should be. Terminate Cat 5e in furnace room?

I had considered just RJ-45 for everything but decided dedicated phone jacks were the way to go otherwise. All will be cat 5e so I can always change. I have engaged in the 'plenum' debate a couple of times with people who insist (and they may be right) that 'plenum' when talking about plenum rated cable means only suspended ceilings that act as a plenum or cold air return. I do have one section where using a section of the cold air return would be the easiest way to run cat 5 and new coax to one room, however, I don't know if coax is available in a plenum rating. In the instance of a fire, cable running through any sort of plenum will be the smallest of issues, plenum cable is supposed to not sustain flame or smoke as much. It's also three times as expensive. The packaging on the plenum cable boxes says (this is BC Canada, maybe its different) it is suitable for use in ducts. I doubt I will, but once the new-cable smell (offgassing) is gone, it would probably not make much of a difference. Like I said, I didn't know what to refer to those dropped sections of ceiling where wiring and plumbing goes, but that's where I'll run my cable.

I wish I could help you.

My sweet sweet ASPCA rescue cat is also dying from cancer and CRF. She's also pretty young.

I feel exactly as you do about the injustice.

I just, a couple of hours ago, picked up pain med for her.

Can you get pain meds for your boy?

My heart goes out to you as it does everyone who has ever lost, or is in the process of losing a pet. Life can be very unfair at times and when it's a pet who is suffering, we often feel helpless.

I hope you will be able to share some more "good" days with Moo.

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Moo had bit of a bad night last night. We came home and he had been sick a few times, and was again a couple times before we went to bed.

I went to sleep expecting to have a bad night - with him being sick all night. In fact, I woke up this morning to him sitting on my chest, nudging my face and purring. All he wanted was some cuddling with me, and didn't want to wait for me to wake up. I think it is the best way to wake up in the morning.

I am hoping for more days like today. Even though the heaviness in my chest hasn't lifted, Im glad he is having a good day today!

Please don't think that I'm a callous individual, because I'm not. (I had to euthanize my dog a few years ago, and I cried like a little baby in front of my wife and the vet.) Your cat is suffering. Please do the right thing for him and let him go. Bless you.

When my late Otis was diagnosed with an inoperable abdominal tumor, my vet immediately put him on prednisone. I think it prolonged his life and more importantly kept him comfortable for another 6 months. The vet said that I would know when it was 'time'...and indeed this proved to be the case. When he became totally inappetant and lethargic, we made the decision to do the right thing.
It was still a difficult call.

Cats hide how sick they are until the very last ... if he has lost 30% of his body weight, has skin lesions and is throwing up blood, he's extremely ill.

The critical question: Does he still enjoy himself? Does he have the strength to do what he wants to do?

And how do you want to remember his last day? The last cat I had to euthanise was seriously ill (17 years old!) and died in my lap at the vet's, purring. I might have waited a couple of days longer, but she was clearly fading fast, and I didn't want to have her suddenly go downhill on a weekend when her regular vet was unavailable.
