Dunkie is in heaven....

I think I've cried myself out...but then I come on here to post and my eyes are so swollen I can hardly see to type...DH is beyond devastated...I'm just numb that this beautiful doggie is so suddenly taken from us...

Hi again ethnobotany! I don't mind the play as I am not that touchy, it merely was a typing error and I in fact stopped using 35 years ago LOL. I'll remember that accidental pun for later use, though ;-) I am actually not (more of) a chemist at all, neither by trade, nor by conviction - but came to the conclusion that mineral based salts and chemicals (how would you call them best objectively?) are in fact clean and safe. And yet it's ideologically more complicated than that, as the manufacturing process is extremely energy consuming and polluting as well for sure (without the need to go into any details in this context). But isn't that the case with all kinds of stuff that surrounds us, including most of our favourite commodities, we wouldn't exactly be the first volunteers to abandon "including most hydroponic supply anyway..... "? But yes, I guess I see exactly what you are wrapping around your head at your end and what your master plan might be. I have been doing worm casting (liquid vermi-compost) with modular "worm farms" some twenty years back and would do it again anytime if time and space would permit. It's one (good-one) of a multitude of choices you have got. It's all about choices and the time you can- or are willing to spend on something, anyway. In my case, there is a semi-industrial (yet organic) worm farm at some agricultural university nearby where I can get cheap liquid and compost. There are other points that cross ones mind in a next step, when thinking "home made natural fertilisers or nutrient solutions" (instead of using the term organic). One is that you can't, or let's more like say you wouldn't mix both, natural and chemical ingrediants. Thus, if going natural you gotta give up all the mineral-chemical part in the first place. You don't absolutely need to do that, and yet it would be odd somehow if you wouldn't. One more crucial point is that you have to move from "calculation" and perfect dosing, - to intuition, less control and somewhat random. I am not saying that it is a bad or hard thing to do and yet it may take much getting used to it. If going down that road, there are several interesting and worth considering methods and means, you might look into. EM (effective micro-organisms) are still controversially discussed about there beneficial properties, but as a fermenting agent they are indisputably a good thing to use. Nitrogen isn't a problem as it is abundant in many organic substances and biomass of all kind. But to have sufficient amounts of Potassium, you have to "gather" it with specific bio-mass or ingredients that are exceptionally rich in Potassium. Seaweed extract (powder) is one of the key (additive) ingredients you would consider. If using manure, rabbit, horse, dunky and goat (elephant and some other exotics too) manures are the richest in Potassium. These are just a few examples how you would firstly need to find out about all dots, before you are able to make choices, to eventually connect them. As for manufacturing extracts, teas and concentrates, there are also a number of options. Machinery and tools range from simple bubblers over air lift pumps to high capacity Vortex Brewers. You may go for cooking a "quick fire" compost or rather have the patience and only use naturally fermented 1 year plus matured "stuff", rich in beneficial micro-organisms and with more readily available elements and trace elements. Hi! I am here, just in a funk and slowly coming out of it. DD moved last week to Lousiana and it hit home that I now officially have an empty nest. At least while she was at school, I knew she could come home any weekend she chose. Lousianna is just so FAR away. But they made it safely (in a U-Haul towing her car!) and I have kept in touch with her almost daily. So the comunication is there, but I miss her. I have been keeping busy reading, scrapbooking and cleaning out DD's empty room. It has been so HOT here, that I have been content to stay inside with the AC on. It is supposed to be nicer tomorrow and I am going with DH to a car show (he will drive his 62 Nova). Besh - I have read so many books this summer that I would have a hard time listing them all. I did read "The Glass Castle" and loved your comment about it being a "real" memoir! LOL I too thought it was an amazing book and marveled that she and her siblings survived at all. I am reading "Thunderstruck" by Erik Larson right now. I love his writing and attention to detail. I also read "Isacc's Storm" and "The Devil in the White City". He must do an incredible amount of research before he starts a book. I just finished listening to "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer. I have to say I cried. Other notable recent reads are, "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen, "Left to Tell" (about the genocide in Rwanda) by Immaculee Ilibagzia, and "The Butterfly House" by Marcia Preston. Next up, "Lean Mean Thirteen" by Janet Evanovich. DeeMarie - I have been doing exercises to strengthn my back and keep the muscles stretched and it seems to be helping. I can't sit for too long at the computer, so I haven't been logging on as often as I used to. I can't even sit and read for too long without needing to get up and stretch and move around. I love getting books on tape at the library and listening to them where ever I am. I am considering getting an MP3 player and using my library's resources to download books. Have you read LM13 yet?? Jen - Poor Erica! One time my DS broke his finger and I didn't take him to the doctor's until the next day. He also needed 2 pins to reset the finger. I felt like the worst mother of the year that day. Glad to hear she is on the mend. Patti - Glad Dave got a good report and you can go forward with your trip to TX. I never did get to see those pictures of your DGD! If you get a chance, email me. NHSuzanne - We had such severe storms the last few days too. Trees down in the neighborhood all around me, but we didn't suffer any damage. I am glad you got the brakes fixed and were able to go to VT. I don't have much of a backyard, but I did get some pictures of our local wildlife last week. Can you tell what this is a picture of? DH's is letting me know he is hungry, so I am off to the kitchen. Trisha, My heart really goes out to you on losing your GENTLE GIANT, McDuff. That's what I feel about St.Bernards.My Bailey also had the bone cancer and the vet said since hers was in her front leg, they could amputate, but because St.Bernards are so front heavy she did not think she would do so well. She said it would probably mastisize (sp?) some place else anyways. It just seemed like it went so fast. They recommended we just take her home and LOVE her for as long as we can and we will know when the time comes to have her put down. We had her an additional five weeks when we knew the time had come. She had stopped eating and drinking. It just broke our hearts. A few months before that we were in Fl. visiting my parents and we met a neighbor of theirs, and he loved to paint. He showed us some of our paintings, and he had a picture of a St. Bernard. I told him how much I loved them and that I had one, he told me to send him a picture of Bailey. I sent it to him and he painted a picture of her for me. Sent it back home with my parents, when they came north for the spring. They brought it back to me and it was just a few weeks after we had to put her down. What a beautiful picture. Your pain is so raw right now, but shortly it will start to lessen and you will find yourself smiling and laughing at some of the antics McDuff and you had. If you do a picture with the poem I would really love to see it. Have a good day.

I know you're going to miss him so much, Liz, but please remember the good times and know that he loved you guys and wouldn't want you to be sad. I know you can't help it, he was such a wonderful dog, but in time, your good memories will bring you joy.

When we acquire pets, we know we will out live them. But we fall in love, make them a member of the family, they strengthen the bonds in our families, so when they do go, it is heartbreaking. I'm so very sorry and know you'll miss him terribly. Keep the good memories close at heart.

i am soo soo very sorry you guys lost dunkie. i know from your posts and beautiful pics thou, that you love your furbabies like children, as my DH & i love ours' so i know that makes it all the harder... i hope you guys can eventually find comfort in knowing he had the best family and care possible and the happiest 10 yrs of life possible for a doggie. he is pain free and healed running thru fields and playing until you guys meet again...you, your DH and 2 other babies are in my thoughts ~ liz

I hate that we are in the same boat. I TRULY understand.
It's weird, I thought that it was you that said something about Rex making his way to heaven. I had to go back and look, and sure enough, it was you. There was something about those words that made me feel just a little better.
I'm not sure why. I guess because it made me think that I should be thinking of that....that he did make it to heaven, even though I wasn't there. So thank you for that.
I'm so sorry about your baby boy. I won't say it will get easier, cause I am too new too, but I'm sure it must.
I don't know if Duncan liked cats in this world, but if Rex has anything to do with it, he will now.
I'll be thinking of you and your hubby, and of course...Duncan.

I can honestly say I understand your heartbreak.
I had to put my 6 year old Golden down today too. He also had Cancer.

I am sorry for both of us. It hurts like Hell.

I know how your heart is breaking and yes in the beginning your heart breaks and you cry until you don't think you can cry anymore, but the tears will still come from somewhere.
But the day will come when you remember Dunkie and Smile instead of cry. The tears will still come but not as often. posts like this will bring them on. But more smiles and warm thoughts will feel your heart.

Liz & Greg I am so very sorry for you loss! I lost my collie a few yrs ago and I know just how you are feeling it hurts so bad...Its so hard to loose a pet they really do become part of part of our daily lives
