Charlotte, a 21-year-old poet I saw just a couple of weeks ago when we did a reading for a mutual friend's birthday, suffered severe injuries in a bicycling accident in town Wednesday night. At first it was thought the accident involved a hit-and-run, but later police said the front wheel of the bikr had hit a drainage grate, causing Charlotte to fall off and hit her head on the road.

Here's what her family says about her condition. KT thoughts and prayers much appreciated!

Charlotte has fractured her skull and sustained cranial hemorrhaging and needed surgery early this morning. She made it through surgery w/out a transfusion, and the neurosurgeons were able to control the bleeding. She is in a chemically induced coma right now, to limit stress on her brain and minimize swelling. She is also on a ventilator, due to some trauma to her lungs.

They have her restrained because she keeps moving, despite sedation. When we visit, it has to be silent and we can't touch her - the doctors think the movement is in response to us, which is a good sign. I asked if she has any meaningful brain activity, and the surgeon said that we can't be sure yet. She had a fragment of bone lodged an inch deep into her temporal lobe. They are monitoring the swelling in her brain via fiber optic cables, and they told us that swelling (or continued bleeding) is our biggest worry. She was just sent for a CAT scan and we'll know a little more about her status when the results come back. There are no signs of paralysis.

Charlotte has so many people who love her and have been affected by her. We ask that everyone spread the word about her, so as many people as possible will be thinking about her in this critical time.

She's fine. She and BF dropped by around noon, I gave her the soup, some hugs,my ice bag and ice. She's swollen, cranky (her natural state HAHA) and groggy. But it's over and I saw her and she has a great BF. I'm sure he will give her good care. I did notice a bag of McDonald's food in his car. (Funny, she never eats meat. Does McD sell a veggie burger?) She's going home to her apartment to rest, then back on the treadmill tomorrow-college and work. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and good wishes.

Thank you for your concern and assurances, folks. I'm having some trouble hitting the eye with the drops, rather than the cheek ... plus knowing when I've dropped one drop into the eye and not dropping more. I got some stakes in to support the tomatoes today and had thought that if I could get all of the stakes in before the op. I could string the lines to hold the branches up later. But I doubt that, as the branches are quite large and heavy. Two rows are nearly 48 inches apart and not only can one not walk between the rows at present ... one can't even see down through there. We've had nearly record rainfall for summer, already ... and there's quite a lot of summer yet to come. They say that the nurseries are having a great summer - have been planting throughout the season, as things are growing unusually quickly. It rained rather heavily over the weekend ... and when I drove down a track near the garden this evening ... I got stuck! ole joyful

Thanks to all! I just left her, & I'd say she's... better. definitely better. She's sitting up in bed, fussing about the tubes, about the nurses... She'll be going in to Big Baylor on Monday for a pacemaker, which scares the bejabbers out of me, but she told the doctor to just do it. so I'll be keeping y'all up to date so you can keep sending out those powerful healing prayers & vibes. I am most grateful to you all.

Thanks, everyone. No, she wasn't wearing a helmet. I'm thankful that the skiers and bikers in my family are all big on helmets.

Our DIL's mother fell down the stairs from a 12-high loft and cracked her skull on the front door of their summer home. Her MD BIL was on the scene in minutes and she was transported quickly to hospital.

A year later you would hardly know she'd had the accident, although her speech is still a little slow. (She has trouble verbalizing a word she's *thinking*.) This lady is a Senior. Your friend is young.

As long as they relieved the pressure quickly enough and can keep her stable long enough, her prospects for a full recovery should be very good. I imagine there will be a need for prolonged therapy though. (That's when friends can step up to provide visitatiion and transportation!)

That's a horrible injury. Heartfelt prayers for the dear young woman. I have a feeling she'll recover. It will take time though, of course. Sounds like she got care quickly, unlike the skier who died recently.

Sending prayers. I had atroke in 2001, they called it a Traumatic Brain Injury. Made a 99 % recovery. I had plenty of people praying for me, even people of different faiths. There is One God.
