Is a 6' transition in base cabinet depth too drastic?

I'm trying to come up with a hutch/china cabinet-type design for a 78" wall section in my eat-in kitchen. Problem is I'm trying to achieve a base cabinet depth of 24" in the middle, but I want only 18" depth on the ends. Regular angle down to the wall won't work because at the ends, the wall cabinets will come all the way down to the countertop.

My concern is that there are many cabinets that transition from 27" to 24", and that 3" transition looks fine (gradual) with clipped corners, or even a hard transition - I'm not so sure that a 6" sudden reduction in depth will look right.

Anyone have a pic showing a 6" transition - or have a suggestion of a better way to make that transition look acceptable?
