why does she do this?

we had a boy shih tsu but he passed away 14 months before we got Gracie Joy Devine a girl shih tsu, my husband got her for me for my birthday and he named her, after 3 weeks my dear husband passed away 3 weeks later (he was bed ridden at home for 10 years and i took care of him). the weirdest thing has been happening the past 3 or so weeks, Gracie is now 8 months old, weighs 61/2 pounds and is a little pistol. we go for an evening walk, she does everywhere with us - except wal-mart where we were asked to leave in her doggie bag, but everynite around 3 am she sits in the dark kitchen (yes we even tried the lites dimmed too) on her cushion and barks and won't stop until you get up. do you think she just wants someone to play with her? Also her bed is bedside mine and she has food and water too and doesn't appear to need to go out. thank so much for reading this! deb

Aliens. I used to wake up every night at 3:14. More aliens. Just kidding. How about ghosts?

Was 3 a.m. a time your late husband used to wake up? Maybe she was accustomed to getting a bit of attention or petting from him at that time.

I ask this because people in poor health (as I read he was on your profile) often have trouble sleeping through the night.

If you keep getting up when she barks, she'll keep doing it. I know it will be hard, but if you ignore her, she'll eventually stop.

Blackie is a he. He is old and has arthritis in his hip. I don't get mad at him because he has a thick coat and is hot. If I could make him one place to use that would be great. My dogs try various places. When I yell at Blackie for laying on the hosta he limps away and lays on something else. That bed under the walnut tree has many many stakes and rake heads with out the handle. I sometimes hurt myself on obstacles I put out for the dogs. I should cut his hair. I saw a hummingbird nest material holder in a store. It looked like dryer lint in a metal grid. Since birds have a poor sense of smell Blackie hair should make good nest material.

Jannie, my mom's 83 and has had emphysema for years. She still smokes, she's just never been able to make herself quit for more than a few months. She is up and around, but she's very feeble and weak. Uses O2 only at night while she sleeps. The Dr. said O2 all the time, but she only uses it when she's scared or really weak or at night. Dr. wants her to use Albuterol 3 times a day with a nebulizer, but it makes her jittery so she won't use it at all. She's so stubborn. She's content to watch TV (tennis and golf matches) all day, she does a little reading, and plays a hand held game of Solitaire. I go pick her and Dad up and do a few errands, get lunch out, take a little drive. She's been like this for years, getting a little weaker each year. But when she gets a cold, it takes a couple months for her to shake it, even on Prednesone. She says that "fine" stuff too, as long as the sun shines, or the leaves are coming out on the trees, or things like that, she's fine and happy. It's such fun some days.... In the past two years my dad has had some little strokes and is mentally slower and quieter, and so Mom has had to start making the decisions, when to go down for supper at their retirement home, when to pay bills, just about everything. He just follows contentedly, but his lively personality is gone. So sad. So she also is dealing with the loneliness that has come into her life...I'm more critical of her decisions than I should be, but I try to let her unload some of her misery, but it doesn't work very well. I'm the daughter and she has a great deal of pride. I am thankful, so thankful, that they have moved from their condo where cooking and cleaning was not getting done. And they can pretty much take care of their own personal needs at this point. But I don't know for how much longer.... Gin

A lot of us gals are attracted to those 'bad boys'. And a lot of those 'bad boys' can be pretty charming and even nice at times. This fellow has obviously captured her heart for most likely a bunch of reasons....some good and some bad. He may be 'misunderstood', she may have 'low self-esteem'. She may need whatever financial assitance she can get from him.....if she gets any....and doesn't want to alienate him. She may be afraid of him. He may be great in bed :) Whatever the reasons, as everyone else has said already, she'll have to work through this one herself and all you can do is be a caring listener and help pick up the pieces as they fall. I have been going through this with our eldest daughter, now 36, for about 6 years........now in the throes of divorce. It hurts so to watch them make mistake after mistake, showing such poor judgement. But experience is the best teacher as painful as it can be. And, some times I really believe that it all had to happen, was God's plan all along, that she should pair up with her soon-to-be X because they produced the most wonderful little human being, now 4..........a delightful, adorable, little guy that we will all treasue forever. At least one really great thing came out of the whole mess!!! Good luck and God bless.

Thanks for the compliments - I think she is beautiful too, but I am rather partial :-) We went out tonight after I got home from a long night at work, about midnight. I took her out to "do her business" and she wanted to run and play so I took her leash off and let her run around. Of course, she went over between the shed and the fence (where I don't normally let her go). It was dark but I could tell she was rolling around (ewww) so I had to physically pull her outta there. Then she found a spot in the yard she was just insisting on rolling in so I releashed her and brought her in. SHE SMELLS AWFUL NOW! At first I didn't think it was poo of anykind, it smelled more a dead animal. I sprayed her with some "Nature's Miracle" spray and dander remover and brushed her but I swear I can still smell it. My DH is going to just die when we come to bed. I certainly don't have the time or energy for a bath tonight... Tomorrow morning we will embark on a new journey with Lexi - her first bath!! :-) Thanks again for the compliments, she is as soft as she looks in the picture too, by the way. ~P

Sorry about your husband, deb. What a last few months you must have had.

I'm curious...what does your dog do when you get up and see what she wants? Does she behave in a playful way, or beg for food or anything like that? Maybe she just wants company. I used to have a cat who would yowl downstairs after lights out, and I had to call him and call him until he came upstairs. In his case, he was an attention hound. Maybe your dog has something similar going on...funny little thing!

Thanks for all your ideas, Al didn't sleep at nite he slept during the day and if he slept at nite it would only be for an hour or so. Al was only with us for 3 weeks after we got her. and she slept through the nite except for this last month. the neighbourhood is quiet only 7 houses and when we (my dd or myself) get up to see what she's doing all she does is follow us back to our bedrooms. i think she's trying to say i'm bored come play, i'm gracie and i'm little! she does love all the attention she gets even from the most misable people you might know, her personality is what you'd call "super", sometimes i'm afraid that someone might just scoop her up and run away with her. she's so different from our "boy" he was just mean, her she's just happy,happy. thanks again for your help. ps just a little bit of nosyness here but have you noticed that alot of pets are overweight?

It is quite possible your dog is hearing outside critters, or critters in the walls which are nocturnal..stop and quietly listen, r set out some traps.

Have you tried taking her cushion from the kitchen to your bedroom at night? She sounds slightly princesish like my dog, and if theres no bed or blanket, she's got no interest in being there. Maybe she'll stay in the bedroom if you take her cushion?

Maybe get her accustomed to taking the cushion to bed to mean it's time to go to sleep. For the next few nights, when she barks, take her cushion when you get up. Then just start taking it to bed with you first thing. Kind of like how my dogs know when the lamp goes off in the living room, it's bed time and they both automatically go to bed without a word spoken to them. But if we stay up super late, they won't go to bed until that light is turned off.

Mabye it'll work the same with the cushion?

Although mazer is right too, you may have a 3 am visitor outside, too, and your dog can hear it.

I just got a female shih tzu puppy, and we started to name her Gracie! This puppy occasionally "snorts", which is something the vet said they do because of their short nasal passages and he said she will eventually outgrow it. Anyway, because of the snorting, we decided to name her Chrissy after Suzanna Sommer's character on "Three's Company"! She is such a little pistol ball! Lots different having a puppy when you're used to grown up dogs (we have 2 grown dogs, too).
