Disturbing story about choking puppy

Before we got our guide dog puppy I never knew that you could do the heimlich on a dog. I just saw this story the other day and just cried because I couldn't help but think that if these folks knew it might have saved their puppy.

OMG that is the most insensitive thing I have ever seen an officer do. Honestly I don't know what I would do if it were my dog. I do know how to do the heimlich on a dog but it could be anything........I can't even begin to express my deepest sympathy for that family. And boy would I also have quite of few words for the JERK!

My husband and I raise birds, we have a wide variety of chickens and a couple of white Pekin Ducks. We raise our birds for the eggs the produce and to keep the bug population to a minimum in our yard. Our birds are given free range access during the day to our 5 acres and put up at night because in the beginning we lost several to predators. We have even caught a fox in our hen house with one of our hens in its mouth. We have used live traps to capture them and working with animal control released those animals back into the wild on the game reserve. So as you can tell we are all about making sure all animals be they ours or wildlife have the highest quality of life possible. We purchased 6 of these birds from our local feed store. Not knowing what they were thinking they were white egg layers. Imagine my surprise when I got home and did a little research to discover that our most recent addition to our flock were Cornish Rock and their health and history. It broke our hearts and of those 6 birds only 2 survived to "adulthood". We named our roo and hen Romeo and Juliet. They became pets and as soon as released with the rest of our chicks for the season began following us around, coming when called (yes you can train chickens to come when called). And I do photography and they would literally climb up in my lap while sitting outside to take photographs of our yard. I love macro photography and would not only take pictures of the native plants but also of the birds doing what birds do best finding bugs and eating things. I became very attached to our little surviving duo. I was overly protective of them partially because I knew they had a very short life span and partially because they found a way to break through my normally gruff exterior and worm their way into my heart. I found Juliet at 15 weeks of age. Lying in our yard. It appeared she had just laid down and died. It wasn't uncommon for them to nap constantly in the yard. They would peck for a while and then lay down. The other birds would often ignore them or not include them in their chicken games of chase and where is the worm. They were a flock unto themselves. As I mentioned earlier we also have Pekin Ducks and poor Romeo began to hang out with them once Juliet was gone. It broke my heart to watch him wandering around the yard searching for his mate but never finding her. Now when visitors come over he will follow them around and beg for attention. He even went so far as to try and get in one visitors car. He is a loving bird who only wants the companionship that was offered by his own kind, but lacking that has learned to get that attention from humans and ducks. I think what they do to these birds is beyond cruel. I have had neighbors who also have purchased these birds not knowing what they were and either found them lying dead in their yard or the poor birds legs literally broke under their own weight when they were kept with growing chicks that are fed constantly. I was outraged when I read about how these birds are treated by Tyson and tasty or not they are a living breathing life force that deserves our respect and care. After learning what I have learned about these types of birds and that the major producer of this breed is Tyson chicken I cannot walk past a freezer unit in our local grocery without wanting to cry. I know I am an old sentimental fool, but when you mess with nature you mess with your own food source. When our other chicks died they were disposed of the same way anything that dies is on our farm. And although my other chicks were often dug up by night predators poor Juliet still lays in peace, because even the wildlife won't eat her. A lesson we might all take notice of. If wildlife won't eat it should we?

Thank you so much, I appreciate you helping me out here! Beckham's day consists of: - outside time as soon as he wakes up (about a 20 minute walk, he is 95% potty trained) - inside for feeding (we feed him twice per day, 9am and 5pm) - he is free for most of the time the kids are at school, normally follows me around. He has toys and a bed he likes to lay in and unless I go upstairs for something he is at my feet We have taught him not to go upstairs to the bedrooms, my thinking being we would allow him on that carpeted area once he is house trained. He is an intelligent dog and after being reprimanded a few times does not go up the stairs (no gate) but sits at the bottom until we come down. - I take him out a few times during the day but when the kids get home from school they take him out and play with him in the yard. He also likes to tear around the house chasing whatever we will throw for him. - About 9pm when we go upstairs he is told to "kennel up" which he readily does for a treat). He has his tantrum for about 30 minutes and we don't hear from him again. What else can I tell you? He is good with the "give it" command relinquishing anything he has. Has never had table scraps so does not beg. Will stay when told. Is not allowed on the furniture. Has never chewed anything (unless it was through his crate bars). Rides nicely in the car. Is only a maniac with jumping on people (including the kids) during the first 3 minutes he sees them. He will bark and growl briefly when someone comes to the door or he thinks he hears a strange noise so feels some amount of "protecting" the house? Shows absolutely no aggression toward strangers or other dogs - his nub of a tail never stops wagging. I agree with you on the crate and last night he somehow got a corner of the throw rug in the laundry room where his crate is and spent heaven knows how much time pulling it through the bars and shredding the corner! I think he loves his family so much that he can't stand being away from us but I am not backing down on the crate. I am explaining to my youngest to be firm with him and have her work with him (commands and treats as well as being the one who feeds him) as I'm desperately trying to do just as you say and have him see her as superior. She was guilty of hugging him early on (which he didn't seem to mind) and I am watching to see if she is doing that again which might bring on the growling. He definitely goes belly up when I so much as raise my voice. Agression seems to be completely out of his sweet nature. He seems to be the perfect puppy but I can't allow the growling to escalate to a disaster. I have only had golden retrievers so don't know the nature of a dog like this. I so appreciate any help! I owned a Westie that was probably a puppy mill dog. When I got her she had been in a crate\cage so long she thought pee and poop was something she was supposed to play with. I spent hours cleaning up after her every day when she was young. There were days I felt I'd never get her house trained. Having a dog stay in a crate so small they can't do anything but stand or lie down seems abusive to me. We have 3 terriers now. Two of them sleep on pillows at the head of the bed, and the 3rd sleeps between us. About 15 years ago my Westie, Hattie, who had been trained to sleep on a pillow at the head of our bed, woke us up one night barking and carrying on. She rescued us from a house fire and I've been a believer ever since that sleeping with the dogs is a good practice. I'd never lock any of them in a laundry room. Not responding to barking at night seems like a bad idea; maybe the dog is trying to tell you it needs to go out (or the house is on fire). A schedule is important. Set your alarm clock to take the dog out at night. Going out before and after bedtime is also a good idea. In the case of my problem Westie, Lila, she slept in bed with us, on a leash all night, and she learned to wake us up when she needed to go outside. Later we installed a doggie door in our bedroom and this worked well. It took about a year to get her fully house trained. Maybe you could try training your dog to sleep on a pet bed beside your bed, putting her on a leash at night to keep her from wandering the house and to wake you when she needs to go. Having the loop of a leash on your hand while you sleep is a lot easier than it sounds. Since Hattie and Lila passed I've house trained all my dogs this way.

I think the question as to whether or not they KILLED the puppy (as it appears they did) is a bit of a red herring. Let's assume for a moment they didn't kill the puppy and that an innocent animal didn't really make that horrible yelping noise as it plunged to its death. Even if they didn't throw a live dog off the cliff, there's also this: These guys thought it was REALLY funny to make a video that was horrifying and graphic and to make it look like they had killed an animal. Actually this officer was a rookie, he has been reprimanded for his actions and another officer tried to assist with the dog by doing mouth to mouth. You need to remember that the owner of the dog was driving unsafely, putting other people in danger, I understand his emotions were running high and he was in a panic to get his dog to the hospital, but he also put innocent people on the road in danger by driving the way he was.

Agreed Mazer but the officer could have put the dog & an owner in the patrol car and gotten them to the vet safely while the other owner followed behind. 20 min. is a long time for that poor dog to have choked to death in his owners lap. It was his poor handling of the situation that fueled emotions.

I am certain it was a very hard lesson for that rookie officer to learn. I have little doubt in a future situation, he will handle things alot differently.

The rookie should have been fired on the spot..'It's just a dog, you can get another one'..How horrible. He could have put them in his car and taken them to a vet. I'm surprised he's still on the force.

please don't make excuses for this officer. I have alot of police officer friends, and everyone of them said the officer was justified in pulling the guy over but once he saw the situation he had several other options to try and help get them to a Vet ASAP.
Rookie or not most of it was common sense, this guy is a MAJOR PIN-HEAD his own words proved that.

cindyxeus - not one word of mine is making an excuse for the officers actions, I was not there, and I can not comment on anything other than what I know through the media. I do know the officer was a rookie, and I do know he was reprimanded. I added information from both sides of the story. In situations like this everyone involved had emotions topping out, and I dont know about you but many people in situations where their emotions are over-riding their common sense, things can get ugly fast, as demonstrated in this story. Both people involved in this story should have acted differently - if they had, maybe the dog would have lived, clearly the dog suffered as a result of both peoples actions.

I agree speeding is going to get one pulled over...however the dog was still alive when the officer pulled them over. He saw the dog choking, that should have been enough for that officer to use his head and turn off his testosterone.
At that very point he had much more compassionate choices to make. He choose to be a jerk and I can only summarize that is because he is a jerk. He wasted 20 minutes of valuable time, on top of which he actually had the nerve as well as stupidity to verbalize his serious lack of empathy.
I have to tell you if wasting 20 minutes of anything grasping for air didn't concern him, it puts up a major red flag for me on what else he'd put aside that needed attendance ASAP.

Anyone with any compassion would have made sure the dog got to the vet, instead of grandstanding and lecturing and talking about how "it's just a dog". Yes, speeding is dangerous, but there are no ambulances for pets in most areas, and the guy was panicked. The officer did his part by pulling him over, once he knew about the situation he should have helped. The fact that he didn't says a lot about him, and being reprimanded won't change the type of person he is.

You can not judge one person by one situation. and just for the record, a reprimand in law enforcement is not just a sitting down and talking to you about your bad attitude. The incident is given a full report which stays in your employee record forever, he will also have gotten some counselling on his demeanor

what are you kidding me?????????? so what, just that day that moment, out of no-where he choose to be as mean and insensitive as it gets, rude and obnoxious. Somehow that doesn't quite add up. In my world if it walks like a duck.........

My main purpose for this thread was for people to be aware of how to do the heimlich on their dog if need be. I have some great instructions but not sure how/if it could be posted here but you could probably search it online. It is very very valuable to know.

Mrs TLC, I hear you, it just was when you posted the link of the story it totally over shadowed the other. Your post was the first I saw of this, of course it was all over the web which is a good thing as it definitely will not go unnoticed and it shouldn't. I for one felt mortified that a police officer, a public servant in the USA would conduct himself more like KGB. I can't tell you how upsetting I found this to be and still do. When I say my heart really goes out to these owners is an understatement.
Anyway just so you know, the Heimlich maneuver is a good thing to know for all pet owners however many owners don't know the difference between difficulty breathing ( such as in Laryngeal paralysis) and choking.If your pet is not really choking, the Heimlich can cause serious injury.My advice is if you actually see the dog/cat eat something it shouldn't or tell tale signs there of than by all means do the procedure.
