Pedigree dogs on tv horrible

ok i watched a tv progam bout pedigree dogs and how much they have changed from years ago it was quite shocking to see how they have been breed to look a certain way.

but what shocked me and made me cry was that lots of breeders are making puppies though by alowing fthers to mate with their daughters and family hence many of the breeds have defects and how their sld be a law to not allow this also to dna dogs before breeding to check they havnt any defects.

But what made me so mad was that if a dog wasnt up to standard i.e wrong markings , colours they would be put to sleep

a example was ridgebacks if the breeders ridgeback was born without a ridge they get put to sleep (i watched this in uk as well and this where it happens)

also because of inbreeding

it showed a dog having fits,dogs having to be put to sleep because of the pain they in.

iam not against breeding or showing any animals but to kill them for such silly reasons and inbreeding them is cruel and nasty and should be stopped

I'm not a breeder of dogs but I used to breed birds and some of the same theory applies. When males are bred to their daughters it is referred to as line breeding. With birds, males can be bred to their daughters but hens are never bred to their sons. Don't ask me why.......the genetics is too complicated!

Line breeding has been done for many years and is how a breeder develops and controls quality breeding stock. Stock from other breeders may be brought in to strengthen a line but the owners will know the history of the two dogs they're putting together. Breeders have to be careful when adding to their line since bringing in other unknown genetics can destroy a quality breeding line that a breeder has worked many years to develop.

Thankfully, a lot of breeders are now realizing that there are people who will take the non-standard puppies as pets but all too often breeders end up with more dogs than they can find homes for.
I'm not saying I agree with what they do in selecting which pups live or die, but I can understand their reasoning.

A lot of TV shows, like the one you saw, tend to be overly dramatic in trying to prove their point. Showing a dog having seizures is not proof that line-breeding or inbreeding caused it. IMO, the majority of health problems are caused by backyard breeders who breed strictly for the money, have no knowledge of genetics, and no concern for the quality of pups they produce.

I go crazy trying to find something on the radio in the evenings. During baseball and football seasons I can't even get Milt Rosenberg's show on WGN. I can't understand the appeal of having dozens of sports talk programs all day and all night. The polarizing radio talk hosts are disgusting, thinly-disguised rabble-rousers. I'm also not always interested in what's being broadcast on the FM fine arts program. Neither DH nor I watch any commercial TV except news and weather. We do record some PBS programs, and the DVD player gets lots of use. Our Chicago Tribune declined to barely worth reading, but is staging something of a comeback as far as content. Finances are another story. I'm sure we'll all be getting our 'print' online before long.

Horrible smell in house

When we purchased our house the basement was carpeted and the owners said they had a fan on because the carpet was damp as they had shampooed it. We didn’t think much about it until we purchased the house and at certain times of the day and night there would be this stench. We ended up ripping out all the ceiling and wall drywall and found that the Septic O Pipe was leaking that runs the width of the house. So every time a toilet was flushed it was dripping . We changed the pipe and now it’s gone. We also had a really bad smell in one closet in the basement, we pulled that apart and didn’t find anything , then we ended up pulling the landing off the staircase and there was a cavity where one of the previous owners had put a new landing over an old landing, there had to have been 100 dead mice in the cavity, it was so gross my husband almost passed out when he pulled it apart. Now we have no mice or gross smells. It’s really a buyer beware on some things, this stench was probably there for many years and the owners didn’t know what it was so they just lived with it. Never know what behind drywall.

Sorry you had a stinker of a day. I remember the day we went from having four cars to having one car in one day! Fortunately all due to breakdowns, not accidents, so you have to count your blessings. By the time I got a call that #3 had broken down, there was nothing left to do but laugh.

I once had an 80 lb dog that was leash aggressive. It took me quite some time to find a way to stop this. Something like that you have to work on every day. It was hard work, but what a difference. A little less than a year ago we adopted an older dog. I was fully prepared to invest a ton of time fixing any issues she might have had. We visited the shelter several times and observed every dog. I had no particular type in mind, just one that would hopefully get along with the cat. Even though we know she wasn’t taken care of properly-picked up running loose, previous tendon injury, I can see she had stitches in her ear at some point, her ‘ owner was informed she had heart worm and he did not treat it. They when she was picked up as a stray again he left her at the shelter, cannot he crated-has an absolute meltdown-we suspect she was left in a crate for way too long periods of time ( we actually didn’t need a crate. She is cat friendly), same if she was put in a room with the door closed. Anyway-she’s the easiest dog we’ve ever had-does not bark , beg, eat trash, walks great on a leash, doesn’t jump,likes all animals but rabbits, housebroken-not one accident, doesn’t climb on furniture, doesn’t eat poop , loves the cat!!! Oddly enough she had never been taught any commands, not even Sit. She’s one of those dogs that one can take anywhere with confidence. It’s been such a great experience. I think I’m always going to adopt older dogs.

Here in wonderful Amish puppy mill country, two Amish brothers shot 80 dogs the other day. And get this..it was legal. Inspectors for these puppy mills said the dogs had fleas and ticks so rather than have them treated, the brothers who lived next door to each other took guns and shot every one of those 80 dogs, and got away with it!

Inbreeding, whatever you call it, is not good for the descendants. It focuses of certain traits, not recognizing the potentially dangerous duplication of other traits. Like the predisposition for hip dysplasia. Or cancer. There is a breeder in NJ well known for breeding Goldens that die of cancer within 5 years, but the dogs are so beautiful!

Inbreeding reduces the gene pool, and serves only the people who make money on breeding dogs. It is not ever in the interest of the individual or the breed. Look how English bulldogs, Sharpeis and Dachunds have physically changed over the years, to the whims of breeders and buyers.

I wish the Amish puppy mill folk would fall on their guns.

That kind of thing has been going on for years---and maybe hundreds of years.

How do you think Budweiser gets all those Clydesdales that look identical?

I don't like it either, have never owned a purebred dog and never want to---mutts are much better all around dogs, IMHO.

I don't think it's worth inbreeding any animal just to get a certain coloring, patterns or look.

Not all purebred are bred irresponsibly. A lot of breeders will go to great lengths to prevent inbreeding.

I think breeders are good, but DO look into it, Mutts in gen are better, healther and besides you save a life, whereas with a breeder your giving them money to continue putting more surplus puppies/kittens in the world. However breeders can be very good people and give you a great pet, however the numbers of shelter dogs/cats are still there.
