Ideas for a Transom Window?

My friend Google tells me this is called a transom window. I'm having trouble trying to figure out what to do with it. Sorry these pictures are dark, but you can get the general idea. This room is going to be painted a light grey with darker grey below. I ordered some drapes yesterday from JCPenney, that are exactly what I am looking for but I hope will work.One set for the slider and not the transom over it and one for the window with the arch, again not including the transom. The drapes are 108". Privacy is not an issue and the sliding window faces East, so the sun is only an issue in the morning. The two curved windows face West, but there is good shade from trees when the sun is setting. And this house is a zero lot line, which is the cubed window. Should I frame that one at all? Should I put anything on the transom windows? On the one over the slider and not the other two? I'm not sure what to do with these windows!! Thanks :) Christy

I would try to get grids in the transom, to echo the grids in the arched windows and the glass block window. No window treatment necessary.

I leave mine alone. I can't imagine having to dust or clean anything up there and I like the looks of it left alone. Some people will put a drapery like you are, leaving the transom alone, but if sun is an issue, you could try to use a cellular shade or mini-blind made to fit.

We had sun issues (in AZ) so I have sun screens on all my windows for a uniform look and heat reduction.

Otherwise, sometimes a really nice and large, stained glass hanging up there for a neat alternative and more pricey is to put stained glass up there instead of the window (the rectangular one).

I posted here a few weeks back also looking for operable transom windows except that I want some to go over interior doors. After exhaustive searches of the internet, I've finally come to the conclusion that I'll have to have them custom made for me because the only operable transoms I could find were much larger taller than the 11" or 12" height I want. I think the minimum height was something like 22 inches. Plus, they came with double-pane, low-e glass, aluminum siding, etc... none of which I wanted for transoms that will be over interior doors. I finally came across a web site [wewokawindowworks dot com] where I think I'll wind up getting them made. When I wrote, they responded quite quickly and their prices seem fairly reasonable. I've not actually purchased the windows b/c I'm still in the planning stages so I can't vouch for their work but you might try them.\\

Who has leaded glass transom windows over kitchen sink windows?

ncamy, I've been trying to think of who has leaded grass transoms, but haven't come up with anything for you. I thought of trailrunner (hi Caroline!), but I knew that hers aren't over sinks. Do you remember anything else about the kitchen you are looking for? warmfridge, the sink came with our 100 year old house, although I think it is from the 20s or 30s. We re-used it when we did our kitchen addition. She's got character, yes?

I believe that if a wall is more than 10 feet high it must be framed with 2x6 studs instead of 2x4 studs, so that would require rebuilding the supporting wall(s). As far as how difficult it is to raise and rebuild the roof itself, its really hard to provide any opinion without seeing a picture of the current setup. Bruce

After I posted the photo of the outside it occurred to me that a photo from inside (attached) might show the situation better. I can see out the transom window from my kitchen and it helps to quickly see my driveway and the traffic in front. Although this is a night shot, the sun does hit that window for several hours each day. And I often see it shining on my wall paintings.

I would leave them alone. If it gets to much light I would use a solar film for it.

Thank you!!! I would love to leave them alone :) I'm considering having my husband put trim around them, but I really love the light. Also, there is a solar film on all of them. Thanks :)

Don't you dare cover those transom's or I personally will call the decorating police. That would be a crime to do that, never ever cover transoms, ever.

I have them all over my house even on the doors in the house. I wouldn't even think of covering them.

I have some pictures of the doors. Gosh this joint needs painting. And I promise my mirror is clean the darn flash is on.

Haha....I won't cover them :) Just didn't know what I should do with them and now I see I should do NOTHING!!! Can't wait for my drapes!!! Thanks :) Christy

Don't do anything with the one over the door or the block window near the door, but you could move the curtain rod up on the others and hang panels all the way to the floor. Cote de Texas has a couple of examples (look for the arched windows over French doors, blue curtains in room with big mirror and zebra-striped bench, also a really tall room with transom/double windows, white walls and white panels).
