Feline Diarrhea treatment I used....

My full grown male cat ate something when he was outdoors, giving him explosive diarrhea. Dripping when he exited the cat box, wiping his bloomers on the bathroom cabinet, leaving a mess when he sat down. Lots of licking in the cleanup process....poor baby.

I found little help online, so that's why I'm posting here.

I called the vet and without taking my cat in she recommended Purina Fortiflora, an OTC(over the counter) product that's a probiotic......like eating yogurt.

It's a powder you sprinlke on their food and tastes yummy! He LOVES the flavor! She said seven days treatment should do it.

After the first day of "the runs", there was nothing the second day. The third day a small clump, still a little too wet and the fourth day back to normal.

I plan on keeping some on hand, ya never know.

Note: He had NO other symptoms. He was happy, energetic, playful and had a healthy appetite.

Thanks for the heads up on the meds. FYI for dogs canned pumpkin works great and it helps with constipation as well, I always keep a can in the pantry just in case. Happy to read your kitty is feeling better, hope he learned a lesson :>)

Glad you found the issue. This problem can be difficult to diagnose. Obviously a CBC / Chem panel to start. Some horses with ulcers exhibit this symptom, usually with some behavior change, like not wanting to eat when food is out. Endoscopy can easily diagnose this and is not prohibitively expensive (approx $250 plus sedation in our area) Some horses seem to be carriers of salmonella or clostridium. There are PCR tests for this that can be carried out quite easily. Changes in feed are an obvious red flag, as is molasses, which someone mentioned. Cushings disease is another possibility. In really old horses (I have one who is 29, has always had a tendency to have 'cow pies' if upset or has any change in her routine - and now is more prone to that) they have much the same issue that really old humans have - organ systems aren't working as efficiently. Diagnosis is key. If nothing can be found, a prebiotic can safely be added (such as Ration Plus). Simple feeding of straight grass hay and water, plus hydrated beet pulp (very easy to digest) can help. Slippery Elm powder and Marshmallow root are generally very safe and easy to purchase at the health food store. They coat the stomach and intestines. Succeed (or it's main ingredients of the amino acids L-Glutamine and L-Threonine) can be very helpful in calming digestion.

It is my understanding that most (all?) cats are/have been exposed to cornovirus at some point in their lives. Supposedly the percentage of cats in whom it mutates into FIP is low (or at least relatively so). This could be why it was not mentioned. Most cats are exposed to the cornovirus, and are perhaps sick for a few days, and that's the end of it. There are a lot of other diarrhea-causing bacteria and parasites (Giardia, Coccidia, worms, etc.) affecting many rescue kittens/cats as well. Almost all cats will test positive for coronavirus antibodies (indicating prior exposure) and knowing that really doesn't tell you much. There is no accurate test for FIP (most diagnoses are anectodal, the only 100% accurate tests are done through necropsy; biopsy of liver for example after the cat/kitten has died), nor is there a truly reliable prevention, and there is no cure. I think vets sometimes deliberately refrain from bringing it up in order to avoid unnecessarily worrying their clients. Having volunteered at an animal shelter for the past few years, I myself have seen a number of kittens who I thought could have had FIP, purely based on my own FIP kitten's symptoms/experience with it, and it turned out that they had had other cause(s) for their symptoms, got well, and went on to grow up and live their lives. Yes, coronavirus is highly contagious, but your other cats might never become ill or might have already experienced some very brief and mild symptoms, so it passed by unnoticed. They might shed the virus for a short time afterward, or might never shed the virus. There is too much unpredictability with this virus to be sure. One of our cats we'd gotten as a kitten a couple months after bringing home our first kitten (with FIP). While it is entirely possible that she could develop FIP much later in her life (from what I've read and heard, the disease tends to develop in cats with compromised or weakened immune systems, generally young kittens, and senior cats), at the moment she is a (chubby) 5 year old cat, happy and healthy. We brought home another kitten about 4-4 1/2 months after losing our sick kitten. She's lived with us since she was ~7 weeks old, and the now 5 yr old cat was 9 1/2 months. So far, so good....

Hi ladies: First, to answer Laurie's question, I think urine should be slightly acidic to help prevent bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall (or kill it altogether)? Something like that.... Although, the vet did say that it's good to keep fluids going through her to keep her bladder "washed out", too. Casey had another bout this morning, although not quite as bad as it was yesterday. And like yesterday, by afternoon she was back to her usual peeing (still about every hour). I collected a urine sample this afternoon and took it to the vet. They called right about closing time saying there was "something in it" and the vet wanted to put her on ABX again. I couldn't get there before it closed, and since Casey seems her new usual self, I'll get it in the morning. I was looking back at her previous urine analysis (last fall), and it showed a pH of 5. That's a tad below the range of 5.5....to whatever. Maybe she has some crystal formation--I'll ask the vet tomorrow about today's pH results. Strange that she has a worse problem w/ frequency in the morning time. It's maddening, isn't it? Not always being able to figure out what's going on with your pets. If there's nothing to be done (like if she had bladder cancer or something), at least I'd know that. Not knowing the cause makes you think you haven't done enough to try and help the situation. Even if a fecal is negative, deworming is cheap, easy, and harmless. I always deworm pets with diarrhea even if no parasites are found. Coccidia is not hard to find in a fresh direct mount fecal, but you can't find them if the stool sample is brought from home. They take only a couple minutes to die and decay and then you can't find them. Giardia is the same way. Another possible parasite is T. foetus which requires specialized testing and extremely specialized treatment. I have yet to diagnose this particular infection. It causes large bowel diarrhea. I would be worried about food intolerance or IBD and after deworming with fenbendazole and ponazuril, would move to a food trial. A food trial consists of feeding a novel protein and carbohydrate source EXCLUSIVELY for at least 8 weeks. NOVEL protein and carbohydrate means you check the label and make there is absolutely no ingredient in the food that your cat has ever eaten before, besides vitamins and minerals. A good start would be the Natural Balance foods as they have only 1 protein and 1 carbohydrate in each formula. The cat would bot be able to eat *anything* else for the 8 weeks of the food trial. If it is effective, then your cat should show improvement before the end of the food trial. I personally would never feed my cat i/d long term. I use it for short term in recovery of GI tract from some sort of injury- severe upset, surgery, other things like that- but not forever. Cats are carnivores and cannot digest grains or plant based proteins. So there is no reason to feed them in large quantities- it just gets pooped out, maybe as diarrhea.

Will a cat actually eat pumpkin? Do you mix a bit with the canned food? My cat is so picky and suspicious about food, I'm just wondering how people get this kind of cat to eat pumpkin.

Now dogs, they love just about anything, don't they?

socks12345.....that's what I was wondering. My cat eats salmon and crab(Meow mix, it's dark meat scraps in a cup). He won't eat most other things. I'm guessing he was hunting outside and caught something....that's the only way he'd be enticed to eat an odd morsel.

I have never tried it with cats, but the cat I had before this super finicky one would have eaten it LOL.. with the dogs all I did was just put it in their food dish and they ate it right up, my rotties I would give them 2 tbsp and my little pip squeak only gets 1/2 tsp at a time,it works pretty fast. So you may only have to give it to them once a day.

I've mixed it with regular canned food or meat scraps, & I have had one kitty that lapped it up 'straight'.

Nicole, I just had a thought. Do you have any cicadas in your area?

My dog, Fred, eats cicadas - much to my dismay and disgust - and then he gets diarrhea.

If I see him with one and I holler at him, he will drop it. I've gotten two from him so far. That is how I knew he was eating them again. He stands at the base of the tree and eats the bugs there.

He is now only allowed outside on leash in an attempt to stop this disgusting behavior. Who wants to be kissed with a mouth that held a cicada?? :(

I've heard that pumpkin is good for cats when they're not eating. Last year I bought a different kind of Temptations treats (natural or some such thing). They ate them up, but Smudge got sick and was puking a lot. I tried to entice him with the pumpkin but he wouldn't have it. I did get him to eat, finally and he was back to normal in a couple of days.

I wrote to Temptations.....his bile was the colour of the treats and he's never had a reaction before. Of course they wrote back, saying that the treats were tested, yada yada.

Anyway, none of them wanted anything to do with the pumpkin, once it was opened, I was hoping that the other 2 would want it.

Murraysmom.....no cicadas. We have katydids & grasshoppers. I really don't know what he ate. It could happen again so I'm keeping some little packets of yummy powder on hand. He loved the treat! :0)

Well, good to know what to do if it happens.

Jasdip, that is distressing to hear that Temptations treats made Smudge sick. I just bought a couple of packages of them because I had a sample and Rocket seems to like them. I will be watching him closely now.

Murraysmom, I feed my guys Temptations all of the time, they love them. This particular one was a new package, something about All-natural. It wasn't the normal packaging, anyway. If it was the Natural ones, keep an eye on him, just in case.

The treats were a bright green, and the regular Temptations are browns.

Smudge is the one who always cleans up any leavings of wet food if the other 2 leave anything, so he's a good eater.
