Added Gump's Mirror to Foyer (PICS) - Thanks Parma

I have always received so much friendly help here, and my most recent decorating endeavors posted here were no exception. I'm very happy with the bench in our entry hall, and related to the thread I posted about that, Parma suggested a round mirror from Gump's for over the bench:

It was something I probably never would have stumbled upon or chosen otherwise, but after seeing it, I couldn't stop thinking about its great reflectivity and beautiful shape. I had intended to get a black rectangular mirror, and this was a completely different idea.

I ended up ordering it, and it was great that it was on sale too!

So, here it is:

I hope you like it. It is most appreciated in person, of course, but the pictures are good.

I always enjoy following people's threads and their updates/follow-ups, etc. So, I wanted to come back and share the results of this with you. Thank you, Parma! Hope you had a lovely vacation!

Oh, and here's a shot of the picture for a neighboring wall. I know some of you thought the scale was a little too large for the wall, but I love it, and there really isn't anywhere else to put it in my house. If you think it looks dreadful there, I will probably take it down, though. :o)

I couldn't resist the prim dolly. I don't know if I'll ever really be country-free.

Have you put models of the furniture onto the floorplan? The small bedrooms are quite small -- 8'6" = 102" which means a twin bed with a quilt (40"+) snugged tight to one wall will leave about 5' in room width which is not very much. If you don't snug the bed to the wall (and against the window which *not* a good idea) then one would have to sidle sideways to move around it. And where will a bureau be put -- and could one open the bottom drawer all way out? I don't object to small bedrooms but I do think pushing the vacuum while standing sideways is awkward. Or to put it another way-- which is bigger, the bedroom or your car? Measure before answering. Figures on the plan: 7'7" + 3'3" does not equal 11'1" My usual refrain: Narrow doorways are extremely difficult to maneuver even without crutches. Pick up your loaded laundry basket -- and your fists on the handles will extend wider than your body: measure the distance between outer side of left fist and outer side right fist ... my small basket requires 34" doorways if I plan to go through without smacking my knuckles into the doorframe. The plan shows 32" doorways into BRs and bath (PR has 30"). Yes, you can use the skinny widths, but I truly doubt you'll be happy with them even if no one ever breaks an ankle. Your plans don't have to be handicapped-accessible, but remember that there are no guarantees against accidents... and it's really miserable to be in a wheelchair but worse to be in one and not be able to use the bathroom. And you'll need some kind of a rule about rushing into the bathroom. I can visualize Himself in front of the sink, shaving... and junior-in-a-hurry whomps the door open. I hope himself uses an electric shaver, less blood that way. Okay, it's a compact plan. That's good. There is basically good thought in the traffic flow. Obviously there are painful compromises [always happens in compact plans], which I'm sure you have considered, such as not having a place to fold the clothes when they come out of the dryer. The doorway from car to pantry is close to the kitchen and that's good.... unless those are steps between, which would be very bad (think of holding two bags of groceries, juggling for the house key, and if you have a screen door, you'll need another hand to hold that open). 3-D plans are fun, but be careful to measure the real furniture that will be going into the real-life rooms. An inch here and two inches there doesn't sound like much, but it could mean not getting the table into the dining or maybe the table gets in but no one can sit down. OT, I've lived with crawlspaces. If you do a high-R insulate, have all pipes box-framed and use removable rigid foam on one side to permit access. Sigh. Guess who had to remove insulation to access a frozen pipe which occurred during a long blizzard. That was avoidable, so learn from my mistakes.

caroleoh - Great point! I hadn't thought of that. I think I'm going to look around for something I have around the house, like a large tray, or something else shaped like that. I could tack it up to see if that might be an issue in the hallway. Not sure what I can find, though. Parma - I'm liking the mirror more and more, and I can't stop thinking about it - LOL! I have it bookmarked and open in my browser. I don't know if you read the review on it or not, but a decorator who bought it said it looks even more beautiful in person (and it's stunning already, if you ask me). I thought the exact same thing that you did about it picking up the same metallic effect on the picture. I love how it sparkles and the details of the tiny flowers painted on it. I agree that it will look best as a solo piece, which, as you mentioned, may be the way to go anyway. I measured it out on the wall, and at just over 32", it will be slightly larger than half the width of the bench. It's substantial enough, I think. What do you think about Caroleoh's point about how it would look from a side angle in the hallway?

Thanks ladies, You've all been so helpful. I tend to overdo things, and also know that I have too many little things on display. You were right about the dragonfly pot Les, of course I didn't 'see' it until you pointed it out. Ok, so I went into my stash of stuff in my curios and came up with this...(the flowers are from other arrangements) Both these things are memoribilia, antiques that belonged to my Mother-in-law...a three stem vase, and a copper topped glass antique ring box. I think the ring holder looks nice with the purse and key, keeping in the era, but, did I break the rules having four things on display? All you Ladies have been great, thanks for all the imput and advise... I have a few lennox vases if you think this one is too much?

Thank you everyone! Sorry it took me a while to get back to all these great suggestions. My house has a craftsman vibe downstairs. The entire kitchen is maple wood and there is wood flooring and maple wood build in cabinets. There is a fireplace there with bluestone. That’s why I wanted to pick up blue tones. I want to make changes in the kitchen and living room. @Sableincal, i like the table idea but I could see my little ones climbing and toppling it over. @grapefruit thank you! I do love the door and the idea of replacing the tile with wood. @Beth I am absolutely in love with that white chandelier you posted and the entire foyer in the picture you posted. The rug color is on point with my wall color and space. I like the wall panels also. I’m not so into plants but I could see how it would bring beauty to my space. @queenmargo, yes the trunk needs to go. It’s such a strange little cove. Best to not bring attention it it. @Design Interior South, the outside definitely does not flow with the inside. The exterior is a light grey with white windows as you see. Inside has this yellow creme tone paint with a lot of maple wood (kitchen, maple, living room maple built in, floors in living room wood, natural wood French doors in kitchen) maple wood furnishings in the mud room and master bedroom. No exposed beams and all trimming are while. I love that oversized blue chair you put in there and the gorgeous multi color blue rug. The wall art is very nice too as is the chest to the right of the picture. Love the darker chair also and the round table you suggested. Thank you! @ginatay123, a multi tier chandelier sounds nice. Thank you for the advice. My husband loves the craftsman vibe we have in the house but I keep wanting to change some of that to reflect the outside of the house. I like traditional with a touch of farmhouse and I do like some craftsman pieces but not all out craftsman but of course the house needs to tie in and flow together. Thank you for the advice on where to find and search for chandeliers. @lynartist I’ll look into the height for the next one. I like the two tier chandeliers you suggested also. The door is definitely the showpiece there as you said. It’s hard for me to pick more furniture for that area because I don’t want any more natural wood there or dark pieces so I’m thinking light and white but not sure if it will work with the craftsman door and all the other maple wood I have in my home. I don't have country taste, but I love that primitive doll! I could see it hanging on a wall.

Jan, I love, love, love the picture on the wall. It looks perfect and the scale is wonderful! It is definitely NOT too big for the space. I think most people tend to use pictures that are really too small rather than the other way around. Don't change it or take it down!!!! The bench et al is fabulous also.

I think the mirror is pretty, but I would like it more if it was flat. I don't quite understand why it's almost bowl shaped.

stacyesq - I remember you! I'm sure you'll love the drapery. I do, especially because it hangs nicely and doesn't wrinkle easily. The color and pattern are just right.

natal - Glad you like the doll - lol. I would like to hang her on a wall too. She has a string on the back for hanging. I'm having some people over for Easter dinner, and I thought she could be a friendly greet at the door.

Sweeby - Hi! I never heard of Gump's before Parma recommended the mirror. There's a whole big world out there beyond Wisconsin, that's for sure.

Cyn427 - I'm very glad to hear that you don't think the picture is too large. I'm a novice at all this stuff. I bought the picture because I like the picture and hoped it would fit in someplace - probably not the best planning on my part. Thanks again.

Jockewing - Yes, the mirror is definitely dimensional. It was a step outside of my comfort zone. I do like it, though. And, I'm trying to take more risks with my decorating habits. Someone else had mentioned that it might look better head on, versus in a hallway setting. That is a good point.

You asked about the size of the picture on the wall and it looks to be a proper size. Sometimes it is not the size of the entire piece (picture and frame) that makes it work or not work. If is merely the size of the picture. Yours has a very wide frame so the art itself is not spilling over the wall to the edge. An unframed oil painting in that size in that spot would not work. Yours works in that spot.

I love, love, love your primitive dolly. Most homes have a small wood stool around the house somewhere. I think if you elevate the doll by having her stand on a stool it will show better. I'm not sure if having her strung up on a wall with her legs dangling is the best format for displaying her.

I do love the mirror but I agree that viewing it from the side in the hall, with it looming out over the nice bench may not be the best location for it.

Overall the hall looks great.

No idea what that has to do with anything. She doesn't appear to have much in the way of legs anyway.

Just lovely! I love the doll as well. You have a wonderful mix of beautiful things, and to me that is what make a warm home.

Wow, Jan...I really think the mirror adds a nice touch of unpredictability. It's even more gorgeous, IRL, than on the Gump's photo.

You're so fortunate to have a wider hallway that allows for the depth of both the bench and mirror. I love the reverse patterns on your rugs, too.

cooperbailey - Thanks for checking in. Yes, do check out Gump's. They have sales periodically that are good.

dilly dally - I agree the doll will look better elevated. I'm on the lookout for a prop. The mirror is very versatile, so it could go in a lot of places. I doubt if hubby would be thrilled to move it, though, especially after buying and using special large screws for the drywall.

Love the mirror and bench. Very interesting and unusual piece. Just curious, can you sit on the bench without hitting your head on the mirror? It is hard to tell from the pics, that would be my only concern.

I also love your prim dolly. The entire space looks lovely.

jan, the black rectangular mirror would have been nice but the Gump's mirror is fantastic (note to others: listen to Parma)! Truly original! Your pillow fabrics are also perfect.

P.S. I didn't even notice the reverse rugs until Parma mentioned it.

Yep, Miss Prim needs a perch. A tiny little bench would be cute for her there, but I assume she is incapable of actually sitting. Keep looking for a throne for her...she is adorable.

Rubyslipperz - Both hubby and I have sat on the bench to see if it would be possible to bump the mirror, and it's not, but I have room to move the bench out from the wall further, and in doing so, hopefully the mirror will seem to loom less.

Deedee - Thanks, I sewed the pillows myself, and had a good time picking fabrics.

Kiko - Thanks, your comments boost my decorating confidence. As I said, the round mirror is not a piece I would have otherwise chosen, but after Parma suggested it, I really started to envision how beautifully different it would be. It was hard to let go of my own idea, though. So, I'm glad you think this is better than the black rectangular mirror. A lot of people have commented on the pillow fabrics, which I picked out on a whim at a Joann's craft store, except for the middle pillow, which is fabric I ordered for sewing my kitchen window valance. I wondered how they would look being all different, but they came together nicely.

Pupwhipped - Yes, prim girl needs a perch, for sure. In fact, after church today, I'm going to stop and see if I can find her something. She can sit, hang, or stand. She was purchased originally with the intent to put her on a shelf above the black rectangular mirror I was going to get, until I changed my mind! The round mirror wouldn't look right with a shelf above, I don't think anyway. So now it's plan B for the dolly.

I LOVE the mirror. The bowl shape is what sets it apart - it is a unique piece. The bench and pillows turned out great.

CUTE!!!!!!!!!!! I love the new perch. Where did you find that thing so fast? I love Miss Prim...my hair used to be that color. HA! REALLY. And I like her hair with the orange/red you have in the picture.

What 'that has to do with anything' is that the OP posted that she was considering hanging the doll from a string on the wall. I just "tossed out the idea" that the doll might show better on a perch standing. It was a decorating idea - on a decorating board. I thought the OP was looking for feedback on the idea of how to display the doll. Mea culpa.

This is the post I am referencing:

Roseabbey - That is a concern for me - the side view issue. I may move the mirror at some point, however, in thinking about other locations, each would have a similar side view from some perspective. For example, if I put it on our fireplace mantel, then it will have that side view from the adjoining dining area. If I put it by the stairway, it will be visible head on when approaching the stairway, but then at the side view when using the stairway. If I put it on the sofa wall, it will have the side view thing going on when one enters the room from one of the entryways.

Pupwhipped - I found the stool at a local hardware store (hey, it's rural Wisconsin, and I have to take what I can get!). :o) I'm cracking up about your hair. What a beautifully bright, unusual color. You're right that it does happen to pick up the orange in the picture above very nicely.

Dilly Dally - No offense taken whatsoever. The doll looks really nice on her stool. I appreciate everyone's thoughts.

We had our family over today, and it was great to see everyone. Many commented that they liked the new rugs and bench, etc. I don't know if I mentioned this or not, but my DS has an autism spectrum disorder, and it was also a celebration of his birthday. He had a rough day, behavior-wise, so I'm pretty exhausted now, in light of that, plus the advance cleaning and cooking, etc. Decorating has become a new creative outlet for me.

I'm going to be the lone dissenter here. I love the mirror, I love the bench but not together. The mirror is rather art deco in style (at least in the picture) and seems out of proportion and scale to the bench. I would think that mirror would need a weightier, more solid piece of furniture underneath. It just doesn't seem to be the right feel for the bench or style of your home. Love the bench and the prim dolls and table.

Jan, thanks to your Ms Prim I was motivated to move a special stuffed cat (with very long legs) to a wall in a room where I can see him on a regular basis.

And have to admit I agree with Catt. I love the bench, but not so much with the mirror.
