Natural Maple Shaker Cabs
Comments (9)I have Natural Maple Shaker Cabinets - KraftMaid - that were in the house we bought 11 yrs. ago. I was so pleased w/ them because I was coming from a home where I'd lived 20 yrs. w/ dk. wood stained cabs, which in 2002 seemed so dated. I'm considering having them painted when we get a new range and replace the OR/MW with a hood. Several things give me pause, though. The first is that in many ways they are the "Golidlocks" of cabinet colors. They aren't too stark here in the New England winter, and they don't feel dark and heavy in the summertime (as my old cabinets did). They are very forgiving in terms of upkeep. I have white cabs at our lakehouse & they need more attention to remain pristine. My DD's black painted cabs are beautiful, but any dust at all, or pollen from an open window, is highlighted on them, as are fingerprints. I clean my maple cabinet faces regularly, but I never feel I have to check to see if they're "acceptable" when I'm expecting company. Little dings don't show, and there's no issue with cracks or peeling paint. The flip side is they can look pretty blah. In my case, the wood floor is nearly the same shade as the cabinets, so there's a lot of neutral wood going on. I think if you have some other color going on with your flooring and countertop choice, you may be very happy with natural maple....See MoreNatural Cherry Cabinets
Comments (12)All these cabinets are lovely! AthomeinVA (where in VA?), given the fact the primary colors to make brown are red and green, it seems every time I try a brown stain, the red dominates and it makes it more. Tried a gray, but ended up stripping it right off. Today I paste waxed the cabinets that won't be near heat and polyacryliced the cabinets that will be near the stove. I absolutely love the color by itslef. Granted, some are more naturally red than other pieces, but I can work with it. I'm having such a mish-mash of wood tones in my kitchen, I'll not worry about it. Or... it'll drive me nuts. Here are a couple of the drawers. Obviously the darkest is the existing finish, the left drawer is just stripped and sanded, then the smaller drawer is waxed. I am loving it. Oh - before someone gets all wigged about waxing, remember 1) I live alone, 2) I barely cook, and 3) many of these cabs will continue along the dining area wall, where there isn't much happening at all. Not even dining. And they weren't built in 1955. That's the job number. I took off a countertop and there, Raul had signed the cabinet with the date of 1990. Cool. but oh, the grease......See MoreNatural Cherry Reveal - Photo Heavy
Comments (42)I really enjoyed reading your reveal. Read it on my iPad this morning lazing in bed and pored over it for a good 1/2 hour. It was more engaging than a book, lol. I totally LOVE your new kitchen, and this is one of the best reveals I've seen. Enjoyed reading the goals you had for the new kitchen, seeing how all your choices came together, the peeks inside your drawers and doors, and reading about the things you decided that others might consider crazy. Not crazy at all! The whole point of doing the research is to consider the alternatives and then choose what works for YOU. While I might not have made all those same decisions, you wouldn't have made the ones I chose either. That's rather the point, right? You don't live in my kitchen and I don't live in yours, LOL. There is something very freeing about deciding what works for you and just going regardless of trends. And I totally get where you're coming from on the slide in range with glass top. I've had a glass top range in the past and really liked it. Not everyone needs or wants a spendy induction or gas range so I say good for you!! Things I particularly admire: The new layout moving the fridge wall and getting a wider opening. The great new views from your sink and peninsula area -- what a difference that makes. Your drop-dead gorgeous cabinets! Your lovely granite. Drawers and the use of space -- the mostly 4-drawer bases without a lot of stacking was a wise choice. The new fireplace wall (wow, what a difference the black paint makes). And a small thing, but I like that you carried the toekick past the dishwasher, it looks really nice. Great job. Enjoy your new kitchen and may it bring you many years of new and happy memories!...See Morecherry aging example w FR sample door vs kitchen cabs
Comments (3)deedles, we are very happy with them - enough to use cherry again for the entertainment system. We started looking at cherry because we liked the warmth of cherry after it changes. Our GC had a sample door that was aged. We used that when choosing other finishes in our kitchen. The kitchen window is west facing so some bits of the cabinetry may get some direct sun. However, because we are in a hot summer climate, we have 4' eaves and plenty of trees for shade so we don't get much direct sun. I don't think it would make much difference because the cherry ages pretty quickly. I've never noticed a color difference between the more sheltered parts of my kitchen (e.g. toekick facings) and the more exposed parts. Most of the color change happens pretty quickly - in the first couple of months not years. The drawer pulls and handles are Schaub. We like the looks and they are very comfortable to use. When I was looking at this picture after posting, it occurred to me that we haven't chosen handles for the family room cabinets yet. Leela, thank you. We knew that cherry does that, but it is still a little alarming to see the new cabinets when they are so much lighter than you expect. Our new floors are unstained maple too....See MoreAnnaA
