When's your spring break?

Ours starts this coming Monday!

Step gd is going to FL, but water should be cold.

She's cold natured, so she will enjoy the sun not the water.

Mine starts tomorrow at 4:15 and will be for two glorious weeks..I dont have anything special planned but being off work is special enough!

It's next week in TX. It's the week after in CO where the 4 GKs live & they're coming here then for a visit! WOOO-HOOO!

Olpea, this fungal vs bacterial shot-hole is a complex issue. My belief is that both varieties are common in the east (and, I have been told this by some experts). However, people seem to only talk about the bacterial kind and it is the only thing listed in spray guides. So, my feeling is they are sloppily viewed as one disease in the east, and this greatly confuses the treatment recommendations. I am almost positive that I have the fungal form in my orchard since the holes tend to be more round-edged with that. I think I have some of the bacterial version as well but am not completely sure. In terms of overall spray recommendation I follow the west coast idea of a leaf fall spray for fungal spot but which east coast people do not mention, but I believe the repeated spring sprays of the east coast guides are good for either kind of shot-hole since rain events are horrible for either of them -- my round-holed shothole propagates like crazy onto the new leaves after a rain, and if there is no rain the new leaves stay clean. The west coast recommendations for fungal spot are not taking into account heavy spring rains since they don't have them. I am guilty of abusing this terminology myself since its a pain to go into a lengthy explanation each time, but most of the time the treatment is similar so I don't feel too bad about it. However you are correct that fungonil is only useful for the fungal kind. LL, I don't see any problem with that mix. Scott

I am in the "yes" camp in answer to this question -- fall or spring, whatever suits your schedule and thevagaries of weather, time availability, etc. I have usually done late winter (not spring...) cleanup, usually about late February. I personally think it is a matter of personal taste and time availability and weather. Though I am not much of a fan of the "dead brown grass winter garden" (apologies to those out there who love it....), I DO think that the mixed or perennial border can be very lovely in November before the snows hit. So I do want to leave the border standing through that month. If December isn't too cold and I have the time I have cut back then. Most of the time not For me, the best time to cut things back is on that rare day in February when the weather warms up and it might even be sunny. A little taste of spring. Great to work out in the garden. Garden chores almost seem welcome. Main thing to remember I think is that if you have lots of bulbs in your borders, you want to get the cutback completed before they start to emerge. Not good to tromp on new bulb foliage.

Oh my gosh, what a surprise to see my old thread pop up! It was, all in all, a great trip for them all. What worked? Just about everything . . . and thanks to everyone for the wonderful advice! ~ Sleeping arrangements: DD and 2 of the girls fit nicely in DD's room (bed, window seat bed and single mattress on floor). The two other girls slept out on our living room sofas. That room closes off with 3 sets of French doors, so they had a bit of privacy, at least. The 2 guys slept in our guest room. Bathrooms: I decided before anyone arrived that, with seven 18 & 19 year olds in one house, there would be no long baths; only quick showers. So, I put 2 wood tv tables in the bathtub with a laundry basket on each. One held big stacks of folded bath towels and washcloths. The other was for the used ones. I told them not to hang the damp ones. The nightmare of many wet towels hanging everywhere inspired that decision. Great one on my part!!! I just washed and replaced the towels every afternoon while they were out sightseeing. I also had stocked both guest bathrooms with a box of essentials: from travel-size tubes of toothpaste, deodorants, Kleenex; small combs, Tylenol, Tums, Chapstick, toothbrushes, girl essentials, sunscreen. Thank goodness, as they were pretty much all used! ~ I put a supply of local postcards, stamps and pens in each bedroom for them to send postcards quickly and easily. Also a supply of local travel books to inspire their daily outings. ~Food/Meals: as I expected, they ate like they were all starving. They loved my meals . . . even the vegetarian. I'd stocked up on enough snacks to keep them all happy. Thank goodness! ~Sightseeing: LOL LOL LOL!!! None of them had been to New Mexico before and their expectations were funny, to say the least. We have small herds of wild horses, but they're wild, not kept in pens. Our visitors wanted DD to drive them , wherever they were so that they could "pet them" and take pics! That didn't happen (LOL), but they did see some occasionally here and there. Same with coyotes. DD had to warn them not to make a big deal about any Native Americans they saw. They tried to speak Spanish to people here, which was met with patience and kindness (thank goodness!). Our chile was "too hot", but they loved exploring Santa Fe and Albuquerque. And Madrid, NM, where the movie "Wild Hogs" was filmed. What didn't work? Well, getting 7 college freshmen to agree on anything, such as where to go exploring next or what movie to watch, was a PIA for DD. One gal turned out to be a hypochondriac, which frustrated the rest. And, DS & his girlfriend decided at the last minute to cancel their hotel reservations and sleep on a queen-size air mattress in our foyer (the only place left!), as they stopped by for a few days on their way to his new job in Tucson, AZ. So, we ended up with a real houseful . . . but it was a lot of fun. Would we do it again? Yes, if DD asked. Would DD do it again? Absolutely not. She said it was fun but exhausting. This Spring Break she's bringing (just) two of her close friends/sorority sisters here to celebrate her 21st birthday. They'll dance at some of the higher end (read: safe) clubs. Shop Santa Fe and ABQ Uptown. Visit Madrid and The Tram. Eat out at some favorite spots and generally spend all the money their parents promised them for this year's Spring Break on themselves instead of an expensive hotel room. Their first choice, Austin, TX, was pretty much already booked up, as South by Southwest will be there at the same time. They were looking at $500/night for modest hotel rooms and super-inflated SbSW ticket prices! So, we'll be entertaining again, but on a much more sane level! Lynn

Wow, do you move those outside? The deer would eat them in 1 night here. We got a foot of snow yesterday, so who knows when the daffodils will start coming up. I can't wait to get my "new" old porch furniture out. I really don't do anything else for spring decorating. I have 3 cute little snowmen on my kitchen window sill - whenever the snow melts I guess I'll replace them with (wooden) flowers. I have a brown thumb when it comes to houseplants - just killed an azalea I've had since b4 Xmas - though I swear I watered it when everyone was sick, all of a sudden it just shriveled up!

Alex's is next week, he has no plans other than going to the orthodontist to remove a retainer and make a new removable one. The girls' is the first week in April and we are going to Disneyworld and Universal Studios. I can't wait, it'll be the first time I've ever stayed in a Disney hotel.

In our county, it starts with Good Friday, and runs through the week after Easter--so it's over a month away yet. In the next county over, they get the week before Easter off plus Easter Monday.

Those of you who are getting these early breaks--do you still get a week (6 days, actually) off for Easter?

My life is a spring break, but not as exciting as what the kids do. I do what I want, never do anything I don't want to, no supervision, free as a bird. Ahhh............

Ours was this week. Students have been gone and the employees got today off (Friday). I took yesterday as a vacation day and went shopping.

Today...got my oil changed, going to take a nap and roll smokes tonight.

my dh is a grad student and today is his last weekdday for break @ UCF :-( he is a mechical engineer w/ City of Orlando and absolutely had to work M-Thur because they are writing new energy contracts right now and he's their analyst for it. he already had several class papers to write and turn in so he has not really had a break except going to classes m-thur 4:00-10pm. he is going shark fishing sat. and offshore fishing all day sunday, so atleast he got something fun in.

last month before my insane work started, we spent a few days staying at grand floridian in disney, i'm all disney'd out till the Food & Wine Festival. next weekend we're doing Universal Studios for 2 concerts. ~ liz

Every week is spring vacation for me since I am retired. Next week is the break for the university and the schools here.

No spring break in our school. We do get out for the summer at the end of May though.

Glenda, sure hope it warms up before SGD gets here. The low tonight is supposed to be 33--which happens to be the same overnight low for Chicago. Brrrrr!

Enjoy your spring breaks everyone, but honestly I'd rather live where iowagirl lives and get out early.

In the USA, Azzalea, we get one week off from school for spring break. It used to be a week before or after Easter, but nowadays, some school districts are trying to make the spring break fit the calendar better by being a week off closer to mid semester. Especially in years when Easter comes very early or very late, they are tempted to change the school holiday to provide more of a mid point holiday before the final mad dash to the end of the year, finals, and all the other concluding activities of the school year.

Arosegirl, do those kids all attend school in the same state? Here, in TX, ALL public schools in the state have the same break (don't know about the private ones) including the colleges. Makes life easier for parents planning time off work/vacations.

We're in California too and they get out Thursday April 21 and go back May 2nd. School is out for the summer May 28th.

They are adding a "ski week" next year. I don't know if that will be in place of Spring break or in addition to.

Usually Ski Week uses the holidays for the Presidents Holiday and maybe adds an additional holiday such as the state entrance into the USA holiday (cannot remember the name), which can be moved around. That makes for better ski weather in early February.
