When are you planting your spring bulbs?

Curious when people are putting these in the ground with our crazy weather.

Now is the perfect time for planting those spring bulbs - all the way through December if you want to wait for the sales on bulbs at the nurseries.

Tulips need to be chilled. The rest can go in ASAP particularly Anemones.

I would be grateful to know the spacing in inches, that you consider "much too close" for your shallots, and what you tried in 2011, and your results. I'm about ready to put some in my EBs. I'm in Sunset zone 17, 25 miles east from SF, so we get a few more 'near-frost' days than the City but it's still very temperate (in the summer we're at the edge of the fog belt). This winter with the wild swings from warm moist rains to dry cold spells, the leaves have barely fallen off the liquidambers yet the magnolia trees are already in full bloom in most places -- normally they flower in mid-January. Last week I just cleaned up the yellowing leaves off the clumping daylilies, only to discover vigorous new growth already pushing up. The ranunculus and freesias have already started putting out lots of growth and they will bloom in another month unless we get a big January chill. The weekend after Thanksgiving was perfect gardening weather -- dry and in the low 60's. I got a head start then on pruning, weeding and planting some container plants I had been holding for the start of the rainy season. With a cottage style garden, I have so many different kinds of plants, cleanup is pretty much year-round. But I figure that's the price of having a garden that stays evergreen and flowers all year-round, too, so it evens out. The REALLY important thing is to remember that this is Sluggo time -- those snails are multiplying even as we type, lol!!!

I plant them whenever I have time and get around to it! More often very late as opposed to a little late. I recall 1991, having our families over for Thanksgiving dinner and to see our new house. Guess who was in the house cleaning and baking ahead of time, and who was out in the yard frantically planting hundreds of bulbs before the ground froze? I am sure you can guess that I was out in the yard planting despite all the company coming over. I even had to take a day or two off work to get all the bulbs in the ground. I had the pleasure/misfortune to be told about what a great deal it is to order from a wholesale catalog . . . Hundreds of daffodils, hundreds of crocuses, tulips, scilla, chiondoxa, lilies, you name it. Last fall I didn't get all the daffodils planted, so I planted some of them at the beginning of March. They bloomed just fine. I only bought them because they were $6 for 50 daffodils at Menards very late in the year, hubby foolishly pointed them out to me. Fortunately I had kept the bulbs in the basement so they worked out, they just bloomed later than the rest is all. Marcia

I usually plant bulbs in early to mid Dec.

I throw poppy, columbine, larkspur and similar seeds over Thanksgiving weekend.

I planted anemones, ranunculus, and Spanish bluebells (hyacinthoides hispanica) over Thanksgiving week last year. The anemones resprouted mid-September this year. Do they normally come up that early?

I messed up and planted anemones late spring, thinking they were a summer bulb. Some came up in the summer and died back, and recently some others have sprouted. So I'm really not sure about them.

I have some thalia daffodils to plant, as well as CHIONODOXA FORBESII and PUSCHKINIA LIBANOTICA...hoping these will make an interesting early spring ground cover under grass. Now I have 300+ bulbs to plant. :-o

My daffodils are about 6 inches up right now they bloom for me here south of Houston about Thanksgiving time.

Oddly I have some daffodils coming up too. They are normally an early spring bloomer for us up here in the North (DFW).

But to answer the OP's question, December for me.

Okay, I was confused about that, too. I noticed what I thought might be daffodils and thought...surely not?! Will they bloom again in the spring?

Mine bloom from about Thanksgiving until January then they die back in late spring early summer.

Daffs put up foliage first as do many other spring bulbs. It very common for them to launch foliage, have it nipped back by the cold and then bloom. The earliest are the old paper white narcissus, one called Rnjnveld early sensation is a mid size trumpet and it appears in late January for me. the rest seem to come later in Feb through March. don't worry....it's nature
