Do you use oven bags?

I bought some. Was going to try baking a fresh ham roast in them, but it ended up in the crock pot this morning. (A first for crock pot ham, hope that experiment turns out, it's a beautiful ham).
So, if you use cooking bags, what do you roast in them?

I use oven bags for a number of things and love them.

-Keep your oven clean - no more splattering - when roasting meat.

-Great for use in my solar ovens.

-Line a roaster when baking cereal/nut mixtures (Chex Mix) for quick clean-up. No more baked on mess.

-They save energy because food cooks faster (10%). But they are also more forgiving if dinner is delayed. The meat won't dry out. Meat is self-basting, so one less thing to think about.

-You won't believe the large amount of meat juices!!!

I make my white bean chicken chili in it. Super easy! An old, Southern Living recipe.

Melissa, thanks for the info about the 5 gal bags being sufficient for most hostas. If you happen to talk to him again could you ask if he ships to Canada? Squirejohn, Canadian Hydrogardens in Ancaster, Ontario sells the agroliners and spin out fabric but only in bulk. They also deliver to the Toronto area. So far, I've approached only one nursery here in Ottawa about stocking the products, which they can buy from Texel. I'm waiting to hear from Canadian Hydrogardens about the cost of a roll of the fabric. The 100 foot roll will provide 25 squares (4'x4'). I hope the cost isn't prohibitive. I'm thinking that the fabric should be less expensive than the bags because it is less labour intensive.

An update. We purchased a Fisher and Paykel double oven for $2600 delivered from an authorized dealer over Ebay of all places. I checked the wiring to our old oven and I was amazed to discover that although it was a 30 amp breaker they had used 8 gauge wire. I installed a 40 amp breaker and we were good to go. As mentioned in this thread, when you have the option of two dishes that require different temps. and oven modes to prepare you use what you have. Our menus have expanded since we installed the double oven. We purchased a countertop microwave in stainless to match the ovens. So far the biggest difference is that the FP oven is far superior compared to the Jennair that we had. I never thought that an oven would make such a difference. The same recipes taste so much better. Even a simple dish like roasted new potatoes with rosemary have a creamier texture while still remaining crisp. Based on my experience I would not hesitate recommending a double oven if you can accommodate them n your kitchen. Thanks for the advice offered....

I see this thread is kind of old now, but besides all the personal opinions, does anybody know how to get that nice brown skin when using an oven bag? When I make the turkey, the night before I take a few sticks of butter, a whole yellow onion and some spices and cook them all together. Then I take that and place it into a food processor until it becomes one homogenous mixture of sorts, then I place that into a large freezer bag and flatten it out in the fridge. I got this idea from Paula Dean. The next day when you are getting your turkey ready you use your fingers to gently separate the skin from the meat, and you slide in the hardened butter mixture in between the skin and the meat. This method works incredibly well for an oven bag or not, as it infuses the meat with a delicious flavor. For people wary of the bag, the thing is fantastic! The meat comes out delicious and moist. It takes 4 hours as opposed to 8 hours to cook the turkey and needs no basting or any other fuss. I just wish it got that picture perfect browning to it, but we usually slice it up anyways so it isn't that big of a deal, but would like to hear any suggestions on how to attain this? I was thinking that maybe I should try cutting back the plastic for the last 20 or 30 minutes? I am just worried about drying the meat out :/

I agree with Jakabedy - I used the bag for stuff I never used again. As a matter of fact, I just put the four love seat slipcovers I had in these bags out for Purple Heart. Mine were the vacuum-out-the-air kind. Mine did leak. Steph - I have asthma reactions to the very same things you mentioned! We get unscented products because of this. I cannot have ammonia or any heavy-duty cleaners. Gasoline or diesel exhausts and old-fashioned oil paints and stains also did me in. I stained a garden bench last Sunday, though, and it did me no harm. I think they finally got the worst chemicals out of stains. As for perfume, I get a tickle in my lungs that makes me cough uncontrollably. We had to stop going to the opera because of it. With opera tickets, you sit next to the same people each time because you all bought season tickets. One of the ladies near us must have had really offensive perfume, I just could not take it. It is no fun to spend the night strategically working to prevent myself from coughing. With your sensitivities, do you have an asthmatic reaction? Headaches?

I used one when brining a turkey in a small trash can since I didn't have any other container large enough. I just lined the can with the bag since I didn't want to put the turkey directly into the trash can. It worked fine.

I think I've cooked in the bags once or twice, and they are nice to keep the oven clean.

I started cooking turkeys in them and love, love, love how they turn out. I've been making locally grown heritage birds and they can be a bit tricky to keep moist, but the bags are perfect.

I also use them for storing/wrapping turkeys that I dry rub the night before deep frying. They are the perfect size and keep all the salty mess contained.

I have a large bone-in turkey breast roasting in a bag as we speak. The results are always good.
