Do you use oven bags?

I bought some. Was going to try baking a fresh ham roast in them, but it ended up in the crock pot this morning. (A first for crock pot ham, hope that experiment turns out, it's a beautiful ham).
So, if you use cooking bags, what do you roast in them?

I use oven bags for a number of things and love them.

-Keep your oven clean - no more splattering - when roasting meat.

-Great for use in my solar ovens.

-Line a roaster when baking cereal/nut mixtures (Chex Mix) for quick clean-up. No more baked on mess.

-They save energy because food cooks faster (10%). But they are also more forgiving if dinner is delayed. The meat won't dry out. Meat is self-basting, so one less thing to think about.

-You won't believe the large amount of meat juices!!!

I make my white bean chicken chili in it. Super easy! An old, Southern Living recipe.

I often cook rice or beans in a light weight stainless steel bowl with a folded band of aluminum foil under it to lift bowl when food cooked. Water is added to the bottom of the pot, a rack inserted, and foil covers bowl and contents. If the rice bean calls for 2 cups water to one cup rice or beans, I add that to bowl before covering it with foil. I also season bowl before doing this. Reason - I am a 2 person family. If I want to cook rice or beans for one meal, I cannot cook this small amount in my 6 quart Presto cooker. Cooking it in a bowl means I can still cook my rice or beans in 7 to 15 minutes, remove the stainless bowl and present for serving, and dump and rinse out the Presto in half a minute. No chances of drying out or burning small quantities of food on the bottom of my Presto. This higher and better use of a pressure cooker comes from Miss Vickie. Her cookbook on pressure cooking is wonderful. Her advise is given freely and well thought out also (on her website). Just my observations based on implementation. Jim in So Calif

An update. We purchased a Fisher and Paykel double oven for $2600 delivered from an authorized dealer over Ebay of all places. I checked the wiring to our old oven and I was amazed to discover that although it was a 30 amp breaker they had used 8 gauge wire. I installed a 40 amp breaker and we were good to go. As mentioned in this thread, when you have the option of two dishes that require different temps. and oven modes to prepare you use what you have. Our menus have expanded since we installed the double oven. We purchased a countertop microwave in stainless to match the ovens. So far the biggest difference is that the FP oven is far superior compared to the Jennair that we had. I never thought that an oven would make such a difference. The same recipes taste so much better. Even a simple dish like roasted new potatoes with rosemary have a creamier texture while still remaining crisp. Based on my experience I would not hesitate recommending a double oven if you can accommodate them n your kitchen. Thanks for the advice offered....

I use a small one for coupons, too. I also use the larger "zip" ones to sort hardware-type things: In one bag are picture-hanging nails/clips/3M Command hooks. In another are spare drapery holder thingies -- brackets, old finials, etc. A couple others hold other things. I got tired of digging through a large plastic toolbox and a large Rubbermaid-type bin for things. This way, I can spot what I need before I even have to open the bags. Also, I use the smaller zip bags to divvy up my dog's kibble servings when she's going to the dogsitter's home for a few nights when I have to be away.

Do you use rfid blocking wallets, bags, inserts, or sleeves?

I have 2 - one is a passport holder with 8 credit card slots on one side and an id slot on the other for a driver's license. The other one is a wristlet that will hold my cell phone too I didn't purchase them because they claimed they were RFID blocking but because of their features. Unfortunately the opinions as to whether you need one or if they really work seem to vary widely. One of the things that confuses me is that the chip cards are advertised as offering greater security - but all of the ones I have also have the swipe feature - so doesn't that still make them less secure? I used one when brining a turkey in a small trash can since I didn't have any other container large enough. I just lined the can with the bag since I didn't want to put the turkey directly into the trash can. It worked fine.

I think I've cooked in the bags once or twice, and they are nice to keep the oven clean.

I started cooking turkeys in them and love, love, love how they turn out. I've been making locally grown heritage birds and they can be a bit tricky to keep moist, but the bags are perfect.

I also use them for storing/wrapping turkeys that I dry rub the night before deep frying. They are the perfect size and keep all the salty mess contained.

I have a large bone-in turkey breast roasting in a bag as we speak. The results are always good.
