Cargo shipping pup from Chicago to Tampa/Orlando

I am investigating cargo travel. Need to know the best airlines to do this!

I would not ship cargo...........period!
Check out Delta for counter-to-counter shipping and US Airways. Delta counter ships the pets with luggage and during layovers (something you don't want) and plane changes they'll keep the pet in their air cooled office vs sitting on the tarmac. The pet will be the first off the plane and the last loaded. Note in the link below that they will not accept pets between May and Sept.
US Airways has a good history of shipping but they may ship cargo only.......not sure.
You want to get the most direct flight possible, with no plane changes. If you, and the person receiving the pet, have to drive to a different city to get better plane connections then so be it.

There are also many ground services that will personally drive your puppy to it's destination.

Some 14 years ago my collie puppy arrived counter-to-counter via American airlines. He arrived in good shape, and, because his breeder had had a bad experience once with Delta, she chose American, but perhaps American no longer offers this service.

My sheltie puppy arrived via Delta counter-to-counter in good shape a year and a half ago.

I don't know if this is helpful, but I wouldn't fly a puppy by cargo service either. I would not want one of my animals left out in the blistering heat on the tarmac. I think airlines should dispense with this "service."

Sheila, I don't know of anything online about the Tamiami show, but then again, I haven't looked. Martin Motes would be the one to ask. I know Bela Vista from Brazil will be there, with preorders accepted until -- I think he said 11/20; it's on their website. It's only a 15-20 minute drive from the WOC anyhow so it is definitely worth going. I believe they are using the big prefab building on the far south end of the Univ of W. Florida campus (in case you get lost), same place they hold lots of plant shows and the huge annual Dade County Youth Fair. I remember, before the University was built, when that location was Tamiami Airport, used as a civil aviation field. As for the baggage compartments, they are 'supposed' to be heated and pressurized. But you know how that goes.

BUT, inland locations are MUCH more prone to frost. Saint Petersburg has much more healthy looking coconuts then Tampa, but it's average Jan high is only 69F. South Padre Island absolute minimums are 2-4F warmer then Brownsville's, yet its Jan high is only 67F. Tampa is warmer then Orlando, yet its Jan high is lower, because of its proximity to the coast. Orlando is very marginal area for coconuts, and you can only get a few years out of them there, unless you're on a lake microclimate or in the heat island of Orlando. Absolute minimums for Orlando are even colder then Brownsville absolute minimums during most winters.

To Annegriet I think you could "get the lay of the land" in Asheville in 3 days plus an extra day for the Builtmore. You should add some time to check out Hendersonville and Bevard. The Biltmore is a monument to extravagance. There is a fee for entering the property. I do not know the price these days, but I thought it was a bit much. However, if you are an antique buff, it should be a thrill. This structure was built to compete with French Chateaus and possibly an upmanship to prove that the French did not have it all. Expensive estates in the Blue Ridge area of NC lost their allure after the advent of home air conditioning and World War 2. Air conditioning removed a major reason for spending summers in the hills. For myself, the farthermost west in NC I would consider is Franklin. West of that region, the landscape is ok, but the region is economically depressed and remote from basic goods and services. In Franklin, cancer patients make the long drive to Asheville for chemotherapy. The next retiree haven west of there is in north Georgia around Young Harris.

There are airlines which specialize in moving pets. One is linked below. Of course, it won't be cheap, but flying cargo is very risky. I would hate to think of my dear dog flying with luggage. If the plane has to sit on the tarmac for any length of time as they sometimes do, who knows if it would be a comfortable temperature or not. Even a few minutes too hot or too cold can be horrible.

There was another company that would fly pets......and only pets......but they went under financially last year.

Read all the details when researching for other services such as the one listed above. I'm pretty sure all they do is transport your pet to and from the airport and do all the paperwork. It's not that difficult to arrange transportation, but be prepared to make several calls to check the status of the flight(s) and make sure your pet doesn't get stranded somewhere due to an airline problem.
Again......try to arrange a direct (non-stop) flight for your pet.
