Air travel with a sewing machine
Comments (8)Lois~ Lilypad gave you the absolute best advice! Be prepared for them to check the carry on plane side. I recently flew again with my Singer Featherweight (to our Retreat) and researched the plane and the size of the space under the seat. I packed the machine in a separate case with handles within the TravelPro carry on luggage prepared to pull out the machine and let them check the luggage. Yes ~ that happened on the way there ----my return trip - same plane - no problem-they let me stow the carry on under the seat. Be prepared-and insist it will fit under the seat - if it does from the plane specs - that is how I chose my seat. I always have questions flying with a machine - tell them at the security check that you have a sewing machine. I remove the needle and spool pin. No way do I want them to check the sewing machine. There is a link below to the Travel Pro rolling tote I bought at Tuesday Morning for my machine. I love it! Here is a link that might be useful: TravelPro rolling tote...See MoreWarning to travelers (Air bnb users)
Comments (13)We had a bad Airbnb experience last summer and despite previous excellent experiences,mI'm reluctant to use them again now. My parents were visiting when we lived in CA and our house there was small, so I found an Airbnb a few blocks from us. None of the airbnbs near us had more than about five to seven reviews. First one I chose, the owner agreed to rent to us about two months before their visit then backed out about two weeks before they came. Second one had just one bathroom and the toilet clogged the first time my dad used it. My eighty year old mother managed to shut it off. They couldn't get it unclogged so they called me. I called the owner who was very unhelpful. I tried for an hour to fix the toilet, all the while keeping the owner up to date. He authorized us to use some old towels to clean the bathroom floor. The owner continually refused to take any action to fix the toilet. Eventually I told the owner I was taking my parents to my home for the night because the house wasn't inhabitable with no working toilet. I asked him to notify me when he was able to get the toilet working. He demanded that I wash the old towels we had used even though the washer and dryer in the Airbnb house were in a locked off part of the house. So I took them to my house and washed them in my machines. He notified me that the toilet was working but at that point it was ten o'clock after a long day and my parents had gone to bed in my bedroom. When I asked for a refund for that night, the owner was very very nasty in response. So I asked him to not contact me again (and blocked his number in my phine--he was that nasty) and appealed to Airbnb. They opened a case, but did nothing until I contacted AmEx and asked for them to reverse the charges for that night. At that point, Airbnb refunded the money. If this had been a hotel, they would have just moved my parents to another room or sent maintenance to fix the problem. With Airbnb there really weren't any good remedies. If I had not lived in town, my parents would have had to either stay with no toilet overnight or scramble to find a hotel room and pay for it. After that, I feel like there's a potential to end up in an uninhabitable house with few good options. So I haven't done Airbnb again. I'm not saying I wouldn't, but I'd think carefully about how likely the owner was to take care of any problems and what my options would be if he or she didn't....See MoreKeeping orchids alive when travelling
Comments (9)When I go away for a week or more, I soak them well, group them all together on a few plastic trays, put about a half-inch of water in the trays, and loosely cover the whole lot with clear plastic bags. They're dehydrated and very ready for a drink when I get back, but keeping them together to increase humidity, and with the bags inhibiting as much evaporation as possible, it helps....See MoreThe Future of Air Travel?
Comments (36)Spanish, like you, I traveled about the same number of miles each year for business before retirement. Can’t really say I miss tha much travel anymore except I do want to go somewhere, which was kinda the point of a portion of retirement. I am glad to know I am not the only one who has terrible thoughts about other people when traveling. I look around at so many who don’t observe travel etiquette, but then some seat mates turned out to be really nice. DH would very much prefer to go by car, but he had finally become convinced we could safely travel across the pond. Now we may have taken a few steps backward. I don’t know....See Moretoyo2960
