Don't let the onions catch you crying

goldgirl kinda opened up this issue again and I'd like to share MY method of minimizing onion tears.

I keep the onion in the fridge for at least an hour to chill and then I cut off a good slice of the bottom (root end) of the onion and quickly place the cut end on a thick wad of paper toweling for at least 5 minutes. The worst of the volatile fluids seep into the paper towel and I've never cried since I've learned this technique.

I've never had much success with so many of the other tricks (including the flame, the freezing, etc.) but if you haven't tried this trick, give it a go.
