Adding a Waste Line to a Sewer Line...

Calling Massachusetts Plumbers/Inspectors.

I am tying into city sewer; decommissioning my septic tank due to an addition to my home...septic capacity is not made for 4+ bedrooms.

In my new addition, I will have 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The new bathroom will be about 18 feet from the existing waste line in the original part of the house. Connecting to that would have a pipe run right along the back wall of the family room. Not pretty.

As an alternative, I was thinking to go straight down, core a hole through the foundation, and tie into the new sewer line that will be put in via a wye. I've been reviewing building and plumbing codes to know that 3" pipe is the right size for a new bath (toilet/sink/shower) with it's own vent. I may go 4" just to make sure poop can fit down the pipe.

So, I've gotten different stories from my Septic/Sewer vs. my plumber for tying into the city line in the street.

Septic/Sewer guy says a house can only have 1 main waste existing the house to the sewer line leaving the property and any new connections must be made inside the home.

Plumber says to just add another waste line to the new sewer line (pitched and flow in the correct direction of course).

So, what's to code?

Why ask here?

If you really want to know what Massachussetts Plumbing Code requires in you town, call your town and ask to speak to your municipal plumbing code inspector.

It is that simple.

All you will get in this forum are 'guesses' that will likely be wrong...

About $7,000 if you're coming off the back of the building, going alongside to the front, angle in the front to the middle of the lot. This is line only and does not include a lift station or permit fees.

The key is "6 years no problem" and " may" which is different to has. The price of line replacement will pay for a bunch of cleanings. And my standard advice to those having sewer blockage,nothing in toilet other than body waste and toilet paper. No kleenex,no paper towels,no worn out underwear,no blown out bicycle innertubes,nothing,nada. No grease or greasy food in kitchen disposal. Cold water only while running disposal. Scrape leftovers into trash instead of disposal. Actualy, less use of disposal is better.

That is not according to code. If that standpipe backs up there will be cross contamination between the sewer line and the softener. In many locales softener installs must be done by a licensed plumber. Is you installer a licensed plumber? I ask because he obviously does not know what an air gap to drain is The softener drain line must have an air gap to the drain. The way it is configured, If he had simply run the drain line up a couple inches then 90's it and 90'd it again so the line was in fee air above the standpipe he'd have had an air gap. Call him back and make him do it according to code or make him buy a nifty air gap from www.airgap.com.

This most definitely will not "fix itself" later. The odor suggests a leak. it can be at least 3 things: plumbing pipe has cracks or leaks from intrusive roots, or someone digging cracked it with a shovel or some other reason plumbing has become disconnected from septic tank so waste is landing in the yard rather than inside septic tank 3) Tank is full and needs to be emptied. definitely need a professional to determine cause and correct problem. If you are in Australia, codes may be different than USA, so I can't comment any further on the matter. But the poop is just leaching into the soil. Gross! Tell her to get it fixed fast. May be pricey but not b/c complicated but b/c not many people do this ghastly job, at least not in my area.
