for holiday party. Also needs to be something easily transported.
Any ideas?

Monterrey Stuffed Mushrooms

1 lb. medium fresh mushroom caps
Monterey Jack jalapeno pepper cheese
Clean mushrooms and twist out stems. Fill with cubes of the cheese. Bake at 350 for 5-10 minutes until the cheese melts. Serve hot. Makes about 30.

Penzey's Spicy Cheese Bread

1 cup grated Mozzarella, Monterrey Jack, or Swiss cheese
1 cup Colby or Cheddar cheese
1 6-inch loaf of French bread, split in half lengthwise
2 TB butter
1/2 small red or yellow onion, minced
1 to 2 t Italian herbs
1 t garlic salt
1/2 t crushed red pepper flakes

1.Heat oven on broil.
2.Cover baking sheet with foil.
3.Grate cheeses in a bowl. Toss to combine.
4.Butter bread halves, top with onion and half of herbs.
5.Mound cheese on bread evenly.
6.Top with rest of herbs and sprinkle on red pepper.
7.Broil 5-7 minutes.
8.Cut in strips, lay out on platter to serve.

Use whatever you have on hand or locally. I've used all kinds of contraptions, but the best one was also the cheapest - cane poles and cotton string. I have found a stand of canes growing near a chipped wood dump site where I went to get free truck loads of that wonderful stuff. I cut a bunch of poles to use in my garden. When I went back to get another pickup load of chipped wood, I took a shovel with me and dug up a clump of cane, so now I grow my own 'poles'. Cane grows in many areas here in Oklahoma. I regrows itself every year, too. Makes a great accent plant in the corner of your yard and makes a good quick shade or screen. It even comes in a variegated form, which I am going to get a start of this summer. I like cane poles because they are lightweight, durable and will hold a lot of weight. They are easy to make into teepees, rectangular supports for tomatoes or trellises or whatever you like. I've used canes, saplings or branches (from pruning or fallen wood only), metal t-posts, and recycled wooden posts. I like natural materials best because they are lightweight and I can easily move them around where I want them. At summer's end, I simply collapse them and store them in the shed and they last me for years. When they deteriorate I can either chop them up and compost them or burn them and use the ashes in my gardens. I buy rolls of cotton twine (cheap & strong) for tying and sometimes use willow or some other limber plant material to add strength and beauty to my supports. and also save the strings off dog food bags. Sometimes I find gobs of baling twine laying in the road that fell off of a farm truck and I usually stop and get it. It comes in very handy for all kinds of jobs. I don't care that it only comes in baby blue or grape purple. The snow peas and green beans don't seem to care one way or another. (hehehe). Canes poles are especially great if you plan to dry your beans or peas on the vine. At summer's end, just pull the whole thing lightweight thing up out of the ground and shell the beans or peas right off the vines, as was mentioned by someone in a previous post. need quick and easy decorating ideas

Just thought I would let you know what I decided to go with for my decorations. It really turned out pretty that produced lots of compliments. I took a small size pumpkin and cut the top off,leaving all the strings and seeds etc inside. Then I arranged 3 large silk sunflowers and a variety of wheat in each one. (the "insides" helped to keep the flowers in place) Then I bought several yards of burlap and cut squares from that for the pumpkins to set on. I frayed the edges on them to make them fit the decor. I then scattered fall leaves around the centerpieces. Added the green, yellow and orange wrapped silverware ,tied with raffia made the tables very colorful. That was just the tables. I won't bore you with what we did to the entrance and the stage because that might get too lenghty. But, WOW did that turn out nice. It definately looked like "Harvest" time as was our theme. Sorry I didn't get back sooner. Thanks for all the suggestions. I was telling my husband that I had no ideas, and he said why don't you cook some of the halibut and salmon I just brought home? (he was on a fishing trip in Alaska last week) So I think that I'll cook in on the grill wrapped in foil with some olive oil and seasoning, then make a sauce with fresh tomatoes, marinated mushrooms and artichoke hearts, capers and lemon juice with angel hair pasta - this is something that I've been making for my husband and myself the past few months with salmon. I'm not sure how long I'll need to cook the fish though. I really hate overcooked fish!

Jude, that is the weird and wonderful thing about that coleslaw "secret." I just buy the bagged colseslaw ( buy 1/2 purple and 1/2 white if you want to be adventurous, lol!) and pour on the dressing. I brought it to a potluck picnic at work once when I was working at a biological research station (small group) and it was just my "desperation" offering, and it was a big hit. I don't know the name of the brand of poppyseed dressing I used, but it came from the fridge/produce section of the grocery, and it was probably a somewhat higher end product. After that point, you can throw in whatever else you like in your coleslaw. One interesting addition I like sometimes are peas, which you can toss in the frozen ones out of a bag real simple. But that's not part of my poppyseed coleslaw secret recipe. Another easy peasy dressing, which I think would work good with coleslaw although I eat it on salads a lot, is mayo with a healthy glob of dijon mustard and dill weed. A friend turned me on to that quick and dirty secret dressing. I call it "California Dan's Secret Dressing." Don't tell anyone! You could add honey if you like coleslaw sweeter and thin it with milk or yogurt of whatever. Another quick and dirty coleslaw secret is to add celery seed if you don't have celery to put in it or like celery from a texture standpoint. That's something else I learned from my mom, she put celery seed in a lot of things because dad had "celery issues." :)

Mini cheese scones cut in half and topped with tapenade.
Scones

225g/8oz self raising flour
pinch of salt
55g/2oz butter
25g/1oz mature cheddar cheese, grated
150ml/5fl oz milk
Run flour and butter together, add cheese and salt. Add enough milk to make soft dough. Cut into mini scones and bake 10-12 mins.
Tapenade.
In mini robot or finely chopped :
jar of good black stoned olives. 5-6 anchovies, heaped tablespoon capers, 2 tbls chopped parsley, pepper, clove garlic.
Whazz it all up with some olive oil - don't add too much oil, you don't want it to be sloppy.

Mini cocktail wieners wrapped in strips of inexpensive biscuit dough. Baked in an oven per instructions on biscuit wrapper. Served with mustard or plain.
Fruit platter
Cheese ball with assorted crackers.
Vegetable platter with a dip.

Savory puff pastry pinwheels or palmiers are easy and always delish.
Just about anything you would put in a sandwich can be rolled inside...
ham and cheese, PB&J, pesto, etc.
Travels easily since they are firm/flaky/crispy like cookies.

My go-to for easy and cheap is Deviled Eggs. Although they're not super quick, they're not esp. laborious...most of the prep can be done a day or two ahead.
