Do you iron your sheets?

Saw on Ellen, that when you have guests you should at least iron the pillow cases and top sheet.

Mother ironed dad's underwear, cloth handkerchiefs, always sheets!

I iron only what I HAVE to.

Iron the sheets???!!!! I never even thought about it. And we never have overnight guests other than our grown kids.

I love ironed sheets and got into the habit of it when my kids were small. I had sheets drying on the line and the kids and I took a walk....it started sprinkling and we had to hurry home. My sheets (our only set) were damp so I had to iron them. They felt so good I still do it most of the time.

Lou - no, I've never seen Maggio's around here. I'm HORRIBLE with names lol!! I can see the containers of the two most popular brands we have here, the label designes and everything, but can I think of the names? No!! It'll come to me. I haven't had a chance to deal with my Lodge pan yet - I usually have to cram everything in on the weekends. I never have time after work to get much done and now with gardening season here, if I do get anything done, it's usually in the garden! I plan on taking care of it this weekend tho. And I'm going to check out ebay as well. Besides the nice way they cook and all, I really like that if you need to, you can take the cast iron from the stovetop to the oven. They're just so versatile. And not having to replace pans a couple times a year because they're ruined will be great as well!! I hope I can find some of these older pans everyone else is talking about! I go to flea markets all the time, but I was never looking for cast iron before so I never paid attention to what's available! Hopefully the cat isn't quite out of the bag yet on how great these old pans are and there's still a lot out there to pick from!! Lisa

You didnt mention what temp your boiler operates at but at 180 degrees, most CI B/B puts out between 560-590 BTU's per ft. With 6', thats around 3,480. With 360 sq ft of area and again guessing 3 walls with outside exposure, you perhaps are short 12'. This equates to around an additional 7,000 BTU's, once again guessing because I figure you have not seen the coldest days of winters yet. As you can tell, much more construction, heating system, and particulars are needed to give exact advise, but you get the point. If no more wall space is available to add CI Baseboard, you might consider adding a hydronic kickspace heater under a kitchen base cabinet.

I've seen cracks in CI stay stable for years, and other times the crack grew. It depends on what stresses are on it. Taking out a section of CI can be a tricky prospect. CI is heavy and the section above is, at least partially, being held in place by the section below. Taking out a section does away with that support. (There's also a vent involved somewhere.) I'm not sure I can answer the sloppy joe kind of gal question. There are as many different flavors to it as there are to burgers. I've always loved them. My mother would sometimes make me sloppy joe instead of the burgers she was making for the family, just to be nice. I haven't figured out how to replicate her recipe and she doesn't even remember doing it. I know that the dregs of the ketchup bottle and wine to get it out with were involved... Re satisfaction, I like 'em, so find them satisfying. Maybe figure out why you're unsatisfied? First off, are you eating enough? Sloppy joe started as a way to extend meat, because you can fill the bun with less and not have it seem so meager. It's hard to pile high. I often make them open face on thick homemade whole grain bread, meant to eat with a knife and fork and a good third of a pound per. Or I'll use One Buns, which are sliced flat buns, same diameter, but thin, so both pieces together are worth one slice of bread, and make portions of two per person, with a more usual amount of filling. If it's not the portion of meat, is it the flavor/seasoning/meatiness? Or not getting enough of a chew on to stimulate your alimentary system? (If the last, maybe serve with crunchy raw vegetables?) I also had a hard time figuring it out and tried a bunch of recipes before finding something that suited me enough to use it as a starting point. It calls for a lot of sauce. Basically, a cup of condiments (ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce (the kind that's good on french fries, not the kind that has to caramelize on the meat), etc.). Pick your poison. That's to more or less 1.25 lb. of meat. Now that I have it down, I don't use nearly that much, and I just squirt. In this, however, is my liking for hamburgers with ketchup and yellow mustard on them, so ketchup and mustard sloppy joes is fine with me. You could use soy sauce and wasabi, though obviously in different proportion. I've used adobo and Mexican pepper sauce. Whatever you use, just make sure to make it strong. I guess that's the most important thing. With loose ground beef, especially (since Amazon, I can't get the good ground bison I prefer), you need to up the flavor to match the exposure of surfaces. If you're using something strong, add water or stock or beer or wine to make enough volume of sauce (back to that one cup thing). Remember that half the joy of sloppy joes is the sauce soaking into the bread (and the misery when it's too greasy is the sauce soaking through the bread and making a gross mess). It also requires courage with the salt for the same reason, and basic generosity with all seasonings and flavorings. So, this is what I do: I start with very lean meat. Greasy sloppy joes are icky where on a grilled burger you might want that fat basting it. I used to have to drain the meat on paper towels. With less than 10% fat, I don't have to. My other "secret" is dried vegetables. I've made sloppy joes with proper chopped onions, peppers, etc., but they have to be sautéed and dried out enough not to screw up the sauce. With not draining the meat, I have the bit of fat and water it sheds, which rehydrates the dried veg. Sloppy joes are for not actually bothering to cook something, IMHO. That meat could be meatballs, or meat loaf, or pirouski, or whatever. Sloppy joes are throw it in a pan and turn it into a sandwich, without even stopping to form it into a burger. I use a generous handful each of It's Delish dehydrated chopped onions, mixed vegetable, and parsley, and sometimes some dried chopped jalapeños from Penzey's. Other times, I'll use some spicy barbecue sauce. Brown the meat, add S&P and the dried veg. Add generous squirts of ketchup and mustard. Adjust flavoring. Toast or steam bread/bun, or if really really lazy, make sandwich and zap for half a minute to steam the bun with the steam from the filling. If not feeling lazy, add sliced tomato, pickle chips, or whatever moves you. Mixed baby lettuces are particularly good with hotdogs and sloppy joes but they must be at least room temperature. Lightly steamed just until barely softened is better, but not a lazy thing to do. So...do you think now that you just don't like 'em?

My mother had a mangle when we were little and did all the flat stuff on it. I never iron sheets. Occasionally press a pillowcase. They are nice when they have been ironed.

I sure feel lazy when I read what so many of you do--clean your refrigerators thoroughly every week, iron sheets, cook, etc.

I used to love to iron when I had a place to leave the iron and ironing board set up! I ironed all the kids clothes and most of mine, DH wears mostly tshirts and I rarely had anything of his to iron.
Now, no more room for ironing. I hate dragging it out of the closet and setting up.
Never ironed sheets though.

Heavens NO!

LOL at Patti... but the house had two house guests that snore.... and I had a private tent, without any snoring. :)

My mom ironed EVERYTHING, but I decided I had enough to do when I had little kids, and quit even ironing Jerry's shirts. Now he has only one shirt that needs ironing, but he gets to wear it only two or three times a year. I just don't iron it often enough. :)

A special pair- but sure don't do it regularly. I do iron a few pair of lovingly embroidered pillowcases a dear friend made. Getting lazy...I find I'm using them less and less.

Haven't ironed sheets since they came out in perm pressed. I must have been 9 or 10. LOL

Love ironing though. Still iron my jeans and even iron my sweats. I like them to have perfect creases. Iron the grandkids' clothes and hate that my daughter doesn't.

No i don't but my sister does.She swears she don't sleep on sheets unless they've been ironed,and i said when you are at my house you do!! LOL

I use to love to iron but never ironed sheets.I always loved the way sheets smelled when dried on the clothesline.I felt a kind of satisfaction when I ironed.Everything looked so crisp and clean.LOL I even use to iron for other people when my kids were young.I rarely iron anything now.Can't stand that long and I never could iron sitting down.DH has a few shirts that need to be ironed but I just send them to the cleaners,along with his jeans.The jeans seem to look nice longer that way too.

My mom sent our sheets with Dad's dress shirts to the laundry, and they always came back ironed. I love how they feel. But I don't iron sheets -- ever.

Waaaay back in the 1960s when I was fourteen my brothers and I lived with my grandfather. He had been retired and when he acquired us he had to go back to work to support us. I tried to be a good little house keeper for him. I ironed the sheets then. One day I read in a magazine that if I used the waterhose and soaked the sheets while they were on the clothesline the weight of the water dripping from the sheets would help pull the wrinkles out. I tried it and it worked!! That's what I did until I got a dryer in the early 1970s. I haven't even thought about ironing sheets or much of anything else since then.

Anna has two blouses that have to be ironed and Bob likes shirts that have two pockets on the front. I iron Anna's blouses since she wears them to school and to church. Sometimes I iron the flaps on the pockets so Bob won't look so tacky.

With the invention of the dryer and highthread sheets, I refuse to iron my sheets. My granny used to have a wringerwasher, I don't plan on going there either.:)

I remember my aunt, pregnant and overdue with twins, ironing. She finally got so "off center" she had to sit to iron, but she still ironed everything, and was always laughing and smiling.

One of my first gifts, that I remember, from her, was my very own little ironing set! It had a sturdy, short, metal ironing board and a small iron that really heated. I'd iron pillowcases, handkerchiefs, and tea towels while she ironed the rest of the laundry.

I really like ironing & I usually iron pillowcases, but don't iron sheets. My mother ironed the sheets until my twin & I came along and she didn't have time anymore.

My mom ironed everything. The only time I iron is when I am sewing or when an item of clothing just has to be ironed. My guests don't iron their own pillow cases at home and don't expect me to iron for them.

I buy sheets with a very high thread count, but still iron pillowcases, and sometimes that band at the top of the flat sheet. For the guest bed, I usually iron the entire top sheet, but not the fitted. I hadn't thought of sending them to the cleaners, I may look into that.

I only iron guests pillow cases,and the border of the top sheet...also using a bit of spray starch,but for our bed everyday,I'm lucky to get them washed and dry.I do like hanging sheets outside though!
