Dr. Oz's Saffron Extract

Dr. Oz recommended saffron extract as an appetite suppressant. Does anybody know anything about the dosage or if it is taken in conjunction with anything else? What does everybody think about this, or is it just wishful thinking on my part? Sounds too good to be true, so . . .

Considering the price of saffron.... sounds as if someone's planning on making a fortune--whether it works or not. Saffron is the most expensive 'food' you can buy--Penzeys is charging between $4400 to over $7700/pound for saffron depending upon the type. Guess it would work, though--spending that kind of money for an 'appetite suppressant would make me sick at my stomach, and I probably wouldn't be able to choke down much food.

I know I've treated your question a bit lightly--seriously--don't buy stuff just because someone is hawking it on TV. Check with your dr. or a legitmate dietician before you try anything like that. Everyone's system and needs are different, even foods can have adverse effects on some people or can interact badly with meds you may take. Let your own dr, the one who knows your medical history and needs BEST tell you what you can safely try and what will have the best chance of working for you. I personally have a problem taking medical advice from these 'experts' who are getting paid celebrity bucks for going on tv and telling everyone how to change their lives, and offen selling things to enrich their own pockets. It's an unnatural situation, one that can easily slip from legitimate, to something far less honest and worthy.

I think Dr. Oz is an opportunist and will sell anything for a price.
Exercise is a good appetite suppressant and reducing the amount of refined sugar and white flour works great, too.

Saffron - what's the point?

Hi lpinkmountaiin: Thank you for your compliment .. that's what I love about this forum: the gracious & helpful spirits of folks here. Calendula likes alkaline clay .. my soil is rock-hard clay with pH 7.7 ... and Calendula & dandelions go nuts on my dolomitic/limestone clay. Solsthumper posted in "What's for dinner" thread about the stingy apple tree. My fruit trees were that way .. until I used dry-chicken manure, sold at Menards $8 for 25 lbs., also cheap at HomeDepot & Lowe's. Dry chicken manure is high in boron, zinc, and copper ... most soil lack that. With chicken manure, my fruit trees were so loaded with fruits that a branch was broken ... compare to the years with zero fruit, and zero fertilizer. More info. about Calendula from eHow: "Calendula or marigold flowers are edible and have been called the poor man's saffron. With flavors ranging from peppery to bitter, calendula blooms are used for colorful garnishes and salads as well as in recipes, though it is best to use the petals exclusively to avoid the bitter greens. Suitable for sauces, soups, and to add its vibrant color to cheeses and scrambled eggs." Here is a link that might be useful: Ehow on Calendula

I just received the two recipes below in my email. Think they sound interesting. Sara Lee Pound Cake Author: CopyKat Recipes Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes Serves: 10 Sara Lee Pound cake was one of my first recipes at CopyKat.com, after reading the ingredients on the package; I set out to re-create this famous pound cake just like the original. 1/4 pound or 1stick unsalted butter 3/4 cup sugar 3 eggs 1 cup cake flour 2 tablespoons dry powdered milk 1 tablespoon corn syrup Juice of half a small lemon 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon mace (optional) Allow butter to reach room temperature, if you can try to use unsalted butter. Cream sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Add in flour, powdered milk, baking powder, and corn syrup. Beat each in well. Add juice of half a lemon, salt, vanilla, nutmeg, and mace. Make sure everything is well blended, and pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes, checking for doneness by inserting a toothpick and seeing if it comes out clean. You almost want to under bake this. Triple Coconut Pound Cake 2 cups flour 1/4 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter at room temperature 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs, at room temperature 1/2 cup evaporated milk or coconut milk 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp coconut extract 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut plus more for garnish for the glaze 1 heaping cup confectioner's sugar milk, cream or coconut milk to thin 1/2 tsp coconut extract Set oven to 350F Whisk together the flours, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. Mix the evaporated milk with the extracts, and add alternately to the bowl with the dry ingredients, beginning and ending with the dry. Don't over mix the batter. Stir in the shredded coconut and turn into a greased and floured loaf pan. Smooth out the top and bake for about 55 minutes until risen, golden, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out without wet batter clinging to it. (Moist crumbs are ok) Let the cake cool for 10 minutes before turning out onto a rack. let cool completely before glazing. Make the glaze by mixing the confectioner's sugar and extract with enough liquid to make a spreadable glaze. Top the glazed cake with more shredded coconut.

Mexican lasagna I found this recipe on pinterest and it sounds like one I need to try. This amazing lasagna recipe with Tex-Mex flair is fantastic. The beef mixture includes refried beans and chilies. The recipe is layered with noodles and cheese and has a salsa layer before adding sour cream, cheese, green onions, olives and tomatoes for the topping. Author: Teresa Ambra inspired from Taste of Home Recipe type: Beef Main Dish/Pasta Cuisine: Tex-Mex Serves: 10 Ingredients 2 lbs. 93% lean ground beef 16-oz. can refried beans 4-oz. can chopped green chilies 1 pkg. taco seasoning or Homemade Taco Seasoning 2 8-oz. bags shredded Colby-Jack cheese, divided 16-oz. uncooked lasagna noodles 24-oz. jar Pace mild or medium chunky salsa, divided use 2 cups water (see note below) 16-oz. sour cream 2 ¼-oz. can sliced ripe olives, drained 3 green onions, chopped 3 small roma tomatoes, chopped Instructions In a skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Add the beans, chilies, taco seasoning and 2 heaping tablespoonfuls salsa; mix well. Heat through over medium heat about 5 minutes. In a well greased 9x13” baking dish, spread at least a cup of the meat mixture on the bottom to prevent noodles from sticking. Layer a row of four noodles and spread with one-third of the remaining beef mixture. Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheese. Repeat layers twice. Combine remaining salsa and water; pour over top. Cover and bake at 350° for 1 hour and a half, or until noodles test fork tender. Uncover; top with sour cream, then cheese, then olives, then onions, and finally tomatoes. Bake 5-15 minutes longer—until cheese melts. Let stand 10-15 minutes before cutting. Notes When pouring salsa/water mixture over top it is imperative that you cover the noodles as much as possible so they don’t get dried out while baking. You must spread at least a cup of beef mixture on the bottom of the baking dish or the noodles will stick to the bottom of the pan. You can use enchilada sauce with the salsa to pour over top, if desired. Since the noodles aren't pre-cooked you cannot add additional layers or there is not enough moisture in the casserole to bake them through sufficiently. Baking time is approximate. Your oven may take 1 hour or 2 hours depending on if it runs fast or slow. Check for doneness by pricking noodles with a fork. If the noodles are tender, the casserole is cooked enough. If you wish to precook your lasagna noodles, cook only to al dente. Then spread the salsa over top of the casserole WITHOUT mixing it with water. Bake about 30-40 minutes or until casserole is bubbly. Then spread with sour cream, add cheese, green onions, olives and tomatoes. Bake an additional 5-10 minutes or until cheese melts. Many years ago I used to listen to a late night radio program hosted by Bruce Williams. He talked about and gave advice on financial matters. He would occasionally mention the fact that his program was not to be taken as the final word, because each situation was different. He also said that his program, like other similar ones, was officially considered as Entertainment.

Since there are so many TV shows now that offer advice in so many areas, I've wondered if they are also considered Entertainment.

So I googled some of them. Don't take my word for it, Google your favorites, and see how often that word comes up,

If one were to ingest everything that charlatan suggests one would have empty pockets and a stomach so full of woo woo supplements that there wouldn't be room for food. Maybe that is how the weight loss happens.

Isn't "Dr. Oz" an Oprah Discovery?
Everyone she puts out there and makes money off of turns out to be a scam.

I don't donate to Oprah's scams.

If you Google dr oz appetite suppressant, you'll see the show where he talked about this. Three days is NOT a good judge of whether or not it works.

Try a piece of mint gum. That can really stop you from eating somthing.

Choose sugar free as an even better option if the artificial sweeteners don't bother you (they give me some trouble - so I stay away)

Well there was "a randomized, placebo-controlled study of mildly overweight women" done by Biomedical & Global Solutions, France & published in Nutrition Research, May 2010. You can read the study at PubMed, search "satiereal". 60 women were involved over an 8 week period, approx. half taking a satiereal extract & half taking a placebo. The Abstract states that "Our results indicate that satiereal caused a significantly greater weight reduction than the placebo group after 8 weeks."

I guess that one study was what Dr. Oz was basing his recommendation on. Apparently the ingestion of satiereal is somewhat mood-calming, so one maybe doesn't have the urge to snack the same. No bad effects were reported. Other than that, I saw no other studies on satiereal, a crocus extract, on PubMed.

I don't understand the slavish devotion to Dr. Oz. I especially never got why Oprah was so fascinated by him given her love of animals, especially dogs.

Here's a link to part of his life before Oprah....

I think Dr Oz has sold his soul to the devil..he has said none of his fellow surgeons speak to him any more and I can see why...he has become a charlatan...the guy that used to go around in a covered wagon selling the magic elixir.

I missed this thread first time around and had no idea Oz was fined for the mistreatment of the research animals in his care. He must be a nasty piece of work to do something like this.

Edited because I forgot to add the link (non- PETA for those who don't like/trust that organization).

Carol, are you sure, exercise is an appetite suppressive? For me, it causes me to eat more... or, at least, my cycling does. If I didn't cycle as much as I do... I would be seriously overweight, cause I really like to eat.

:)
