Dr. Oz's Saffron Extract

Dr. Oz recommended saffron extract as an appetite suppressant. Does anybody know anything about the dosage or if it is taken in conjunction with anything else? What does everybody think about this, or is it just wishful thinking on my part? Sounds too good to be true, so . . .

Considering the price of saffron.... sounds as if someone's planning on making a fortune--whether it works or not. Saffron is the most expensive 'food' you can buy--Penzeys is charging between $4400 to over $7700/pound for saffron depending upon the type. Guess it would work, though--spending that kind of money for an 'appetite suppressant would make me sick at my stomach, and I probably wouldn't be able to choke down much food.

I know I've treated your question a bit lightly--seriously--don't buy stuff just because someone is hawking it on TV. Check with your dr. or a legitmate dietician before you try anything like that. Everyone's system and needs are different, even foods can have adverse effects on some people or can interact badly with meds you may take. Let your own dr, the one who knows your medical history and needs BEST tell you what you can safely try and what will have the best chance of working for you. I personally have a problem taking medical advice from these 'experts' who are getting paid celebrity bucks for going on tv and telling everyone how to change their lives, and offen selling things to enrich their own pockets. It's an unnatural situation, one that can easily slip from legitimate, to something far less honest and worthy.

I think Dr. Oz is an opportunist and will sell anything for a price.
Exercise is a good appetite suppressant and reducing the amount of refined sugar and white flour works great, too.

While there's some evidence that grapefruit might have cancer-fighting properties, a recently published study found that grapefruit actually increased the risk of breast cancer in some women: "Women in the highest intake categoryÂ60 grams or more per day, equal to slightly more than one-quarter grapefruit per day or half a grapefruit every other dayÂhad a relative risk (RR) of breast cancer 30% higher than women who ate no grapefruit (RR = 1.30). The trend of increasing risk with increasing consumption was significant (P = 0.015) after adjusting for weight, exercise, use of postmenopausal hormone therapy, family history of breast cancer, and other factors that could impact risk. The same association was evident for women who had never used postmenopausal hormone therapy (RR = 1.44; P = 0.038) and for those with a body mass index below 25, the cutoff for overweight (RR = 1.32; P = 0.011). Although risk also increased for women who were current or past users of hormone therapy (either estrogen-only or estrogen-progestin combination therapy) and for those with a higher body mass index, the differences were not statistically significant. This finding suggests grapefruit's effect on estrogen is greatest in women whose baseline levels are lower to begin with, Monroe says. The results are consistent with a biological effect of grapefruit on estrogen metabolism. At least 2 previous studies have found higher estrogen levels in women consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice, the authors note, and grapefruit is known to elevate serum concentrations of many drugs, including hormone replacement therapies. The US Food and Drug Administration requires hormone replacement products to carry warning labels stating that grapefruit juice may increase plasma concentrations of estrogen. More study will be needed before this possible link to breast cancer can be confirmed. We do know that grapefruit affects metabolism of a number of drugs, so checking with your doctor before adding a grapefruit seed extract product is a good idea.

It's hard to say. This has been my first year of gardening and well, I don't have any prior experience to compare to. Further, I was caught unaware by how bad the heat on my concrete patio here in Bakersfield would be for seed germination. It was terrible. And there were other problems which were on the learning curve ... like not using nitrogen fertilizers on seedlings or on a lot of other plants. Too much fertilizer can kill and in some cases any will kill. But there have been some successes in more controlled plantings. For example, my first set of Puya seeds all failed. But planting indoors helped. Again, its hard to say if GB helped. In truth, I think GB helps more after germination, not before. And of course, that would go for the other stuff too, the Voodoo Juice, Pirahna and Nitrozime. Most folks soak seeds for at least 24 hours before planting them and I follow that advise, but have soaked them in water with GB added. It really doesn't seem to help that much. But after the seeds start growing, adding GB did seem to cause some acceleration. I've taken the following strategy ... 1) Prepare Mulch by adding Pirahna. The microbes that kill mold and break down the mulch will have a chance to settle in and do their work. 2) Plant the seeds and if possible, indoors, under controlled conditions. 3) Once germination starts, add Voodoo Juice, Nitrozime and GB. I also add in some root stimulant. 4) Do not use Nitrogen Fertilizers on any seedlings. However, make up Nitrogen Fertilizer batches to use on certain plants that are very hungry, like Banana, Canna and Palm sapplings that are at least 6 months old. 5) Move plants into larger pots periodically to allow them more root growth which in turn promotes more rapid growth above ground. 6) Identify water restrictions for certain plants and water those plants less frequently. 7) Use Shade cloth in Hot Summer months. I believe many seedlings that survive grow in shade under forest canopies or other shelter until they mature and take direct UV radiation. I will do some more experiments next Spring, of a type where I soak some seeds in GB and have a control batch that was not soaked, so that I can make some comparisons. It's the only way to learn if it works.

We can't be sure it's related but I thought I would throw it out there anyway. I've been taking pycnogenol for almost a month now and we (doctor & I) think I'm having some major reactions. I've been taking 100mg daily. Within the last couple of weeks I've had: headaches, constant stomach aches, hypoglycemia, insomnia, skin rash & a mild auto-immune response. Pretty much the list of side-effects on this supplement. It wasn't until yesterday that I remembered the pycnogenol and we are pretty relieved that we have a direction to take now. I'm on a steroid pack to settle down my immune system and discontinuing the stuff. Hopefully, this will resolve my problems. I don't think I've ever felt so lousy in my entire life. The good news is that tea with a bunch of ginger really soothes an upset tummy!

RECIPE: rice pudding

I guess rice pudding is a comfort food for sure. My version may be considered as exotic but in India this is how we make it. Try it once and I promise you will have no left over. Rice 1 cup 2 cans of evaporated milk 1 can of condensed milk 1 cup of heavy cream 1 tsp of freshly ground cardamom (cinnamon is not a substitute) 2 healthy pinches of saffron threads Nuts of your choice (traditionally we use sweet almond slivers and pistachio slivers) Cook the rice first in plain water until they are completely cooked and mushy. Add all the milks to a pan along with the cooked rice and cook them down for atleast 30-40 minutes (stirring constantly) until it's nice and thick and bubbly. Add the cardamom, saffron (I like to pinch my threads and crumble them in the pan directly). Taste sugar and add a bit more if you like it sweet (I sometimes skip it because condensed milk has plenty of it). Let it chill in the refrigerator. Serve with a healthy sprinkling of nuts.

Many years ago I used to listen to a late night radio program hosted by Bruce Williams. He talked about and gave advice on financial matters. He would occasionally mention the fact that his program was not to be taken as the final word, because each situation was different. He also said that his program, like other similar ones, was officially considered as Entertainment.

Since there are so many TV shows now that offer advice in so many areas, I've wondered if they are also considered Entertainment.

So I googled some of them. Don't take my word for it, Google your favorites, and see how often that word comes up,

If one were to ingest everything that charlatan suggests one would have empty pockets and a stomach so full of woo woo supplements that there wouldn't be room for food. Maybe that is how the weight loss happens.

Everyone she puts out there and makes money off of turns out to be a scam.

If you Google dr oz appetite suppressant, you'll see the show where he talked about this. Three days is NOT a good judge of whether or not it works.

Try a piece of mint gum. That can really stop you from eating somthing.

Choose sugar free as an even better option if the artificial sweeteners don't bother you (they give me some trouble - so I stay away)

Well there was "a randomized, placebo-controlled study of mildly overweight women" done by Biomedical & Global Solutions, France & published in Nutrition Research, May 2010. You can read the study at PubMed, search "satiereal". 60 women were involved over an 8 week period, approx. half taking a satiereal extract & half taking a placebo. The Abstract states that "Our results indicate that satiereal caused a significantly greater weight reduction than the placebo group after 8 weeks."

I guess that one study was what Dr. Oz was basing his recommendation on. Apparently the ingestion of satiereal is somewhat mood-calming, so one maybe doesn't have the urge to snack the same. No bad effects were reported. Other than that, I saw no other studies on satiereal, a crocus extract, on PubMed.

I don't understand the slavish devotion to Dr. Oz. I especially never got why Oprah was so fascinated by him given her love of animals, especially dogs.

I think Dr Oz has sold his soul to the devil..he has said none of his fellow surgeons speak to him any more and I can see why...he has become a charlatan...the guy that used to go around in a covered wagon selling the magic elixir.

I missed this thread first time around and had no idea Oz was fined for the mistreatment of the research animals in his care. He must be a nasty piece of work to do something like this.

Carol, are you sure, exercise is an appetite suppressive? For me, it causes me to eat more... or, at least, my cycling does. If I didn't cycle as much as I do... I would be seriously overweight, cause I really like to eat.
