Costly spices

I cannot believe the prices being charged for spices these days. I first became aware of this a few years ago when I bought a large bottle of McCormick's vanilla extract for over $20. Then at Christmas my son wanted a vanilla bean for the homemade ice cream he was making, and one bean was $10. (The ice cream was yummy!)

Then I needed some more cream of tartar this week (to use in a drain opening concoction) and though it was a larger size spice bottle, it was over $10.

I know that these fancy glass bottle spices are more expensive, so I avoid them. I actually prefer the square tins of spices because they line up so nicely on my shelf and stay in the alphabetical order I put them in so much better than bottles.

But I finally located a cream of tartar in a square can, and it was even more costly per ounce than the larger bottle.

Then I add into the picture the spice manufacturers advice to throw out your spices every year, which I do not do. Wow, that has to be an expensive habit.

I have learned that the spices in the cellophane sacks in the ethnic food section are a LOT cheaper, especially sesame seeds. And I have found a huge bottle of ground cinnamon cheaper by far than the same brand's little bottle. But gads, the prices for spices these days!
