Air gap gurgles like crazy when dishwasher runs - should it?
Comments (17)zl700l, I don't believe there would be anything in a dishwasher that would be sufficient to act as an effective p-trap and I do believe you are basically bathing the dishes in your dishwasher in sewer gas, not to mention airbourne bacteria. The explosion risk of the methane entering the dishwasher is not to be ignored either, I am sure there is plenty of potential ignition sources in there to be of concern, moreover, people die in homes infiltrated by sewer gas. The risk is not to be scoffed at. Moreover, it's just common sense- the practice is dangerous and illegal, makes your house unmarketable and subject to being condemned or remediation orders, and just a bad idea. We're talking about a little gurgling water, not freeway noises. I like hearing the dishwasher when it drains because a) I know it's working and how far along it is, and b) having it drain into the p-trap means that it's charging it (keeping it full, avoiding gas infiltrations) and the dishwasher detergent going through the trap keeps it clean and smelling decent. As the the 'banjo' vs 'my house is bigger than yours' contest, I don't believe in being rude as it were but I believe it's not a question of how much money someone has, but how much common sense /stubbornness they have....See MoreAir gap gurgles like crazy when dishwasher runs - should it?
Comments (7)Ah, unfortunately, my "expertise" ends there--I'm not sure if the garbage disposal would make a difference. Hopefully the plumbing forum can come through. You can do what other posters are suggesting, but I'd also consider calling your plumber and seeing what you can find out....See MoreWay too much water drain noise from dishwasher
Comments (17)Kind of depends on what your jurisdiction requires on why it is there. If it is super annoying you can do a high water loop and get rid of the air gap. There will still be gurgling drain noise coming from the sink drain. I guess if your air gap is excessively loud for some reason then maybe worth removing but I am not sure. The high loop or air gap is there so sink drain water doesnt end up in the dishwasher. Thinking outside of the box, I guess you would need a nonconventional installation if you want no noise. Something similar to a washing machine standpipe setup with its own separate trap but under the sink....See MoreHow to plumb drains to minimize dishwasher drain noise?
Comments (6)Would almost need an unconventional installation that does not utilize the sink trap. Would need a standpipe similar to that of a laundry washer under the sink in the cabinet. It would have a separate trap and need vented correctly. Now you got me brainstorming for the future lol.... As far as drain noise and hiding it, cast iron is used in the living space where the water runs and transitioned to pvc for the venting and underslab to manage costs. You could look into the quiethouse brochure to see how it works. No hub cast piping and fernco connections are used. http://www.charlottepipe.com/Documents/Brochures/BR-QH.pdf So for said standpipe under the sink, cast iron would be your best option for noise. They have p traps in cast out there, just need a few ferncos and some no hub pipe....See Moredavidro1
