Well, it's 12:30 a.m and I too have problems sleeping. Reading about your loss brought tears to my eyes thinking of your husband. I have no idea what emotions your feeling but want you to know that I send my good thoughts and prayers your way. We never really know what will happen . . . my husband's the same age. Do post again when you feel up to it. I hope your trip at least helps distract you from the sorrow you are feeling even if it's just a little bit.

I am so sorry you are in this situation. It is definitely heartbreaking. And yes, you should rehome these dogs. I don't have to go into any explanation...Calliope's two posts say it all. I would like to add that I think a breed specific rescue is the way to go, for reasons mentioned above. I had a dog that I had to rehome because she needed way more exercise than I could ever hope to provide. I loved that dog, but knew I could not do right by her. At 18 months old, she was adopted by a family with 5 acres in a rural area, and is happier than she ever could have been with me. It was hard, but it was the absolute right thing to do. About 6 months later, I adopted a dog from the St. Louis Senior Dog Project. She is about 9 years old and such a wonderful girl. I just adore her, and I think the feeling is mutual :) I didn't go looking for a senior, she was at an adoption day with several different rescue groups. The dog I was wanting to see (a 3 year old mix) was already adopted. I looked around some more, and found no other dogs I was interested in. But, I felt sorry for this old dog in her cage, so I asked to see her just so she'd get some attention. I had been looking for a rescue dog for awhile, and for whatever reason, this dog and I crossed paths, and I took her home. What I'm trying to say is that I know how it is to feel you have failed at adoption. But the situation you are in now is not good for you or the dogs, and there is nothing wrong with finding them new homes. It is the right thing to do. You will find your dog(s) someday. Someone will take this sweet Lab and give her a good home. Me, I would have walked out the door with her, but I have a house full of 11 dogs, so what's one more? LOL Actually, my DH would have grabbed the dog, so I would have not had to ask, but then, he likes having a houseful. When we lost our little blind Shih tzu, Boo, we cried for 3 years. We moved to an apartment where we couldn't have dogs, so it wasn't an issue. Then one day on the net I did a search for puppy pictures and found a little blind puppy. Then I found a group for blind dogs and then on the group I found a blind German shepherd who had been badly abused and I found a deaf/blind cocker and his seeing eye companion who were to be gassed down in GA at Christmas time! Guess what family had not one but THREE dogs before they even owned a house! You should have seen us scramble to find a house where we could have all these dogs. We did it and the cocker and his seeing eye dog came here on Christmas Eve and the German shepherd followed a couple of weeks later. When you are ready -- you are ready! I have no idea why you would need to wait 3 months either. I have no idea why the scent of the first dog would confuse the second. I've certainly never found that to be a problem and heaven knows I've had opportunities to find out. Weed, I'm sorry for your loss. It's hard to bury a family member and some people need more time to grieve than others. You didn't forget Taco, you couldn't. It IS possible to choose a dog that does not match with your personality, I've done it myself. The responsible person then finds a compatible home for the dog, which you are doing. You don't need to feel guilty about rehoming a dog. It would be worse if you kept her and tried to make her fit into a situation that isn't working out. Dogs are cooler about rehoming than we are. I am glad you are finding homes for the dogs. as far as people thinking how bad that people lost their dogs let me tell you a story. Last June we had a party at our country house. When it got dark we started to set up for doing fireworks. I took the two dogs, a toy poodle that was 15 at the time, and a toy fox terrier that is 6, and put them into the house. I didn't crate them as I figured that would be good enough. Everyone was on the deck, which is where the one door is. There is a front door but we don't really use it. To this day we don't know how it happened but some how the poodle went missing. I was so heart broken and sick over this. We made up signs but figured that we were in the country that a 10 pound poodle couldn't make it long out there. We looked that night, the next day, and I cried as I left to go back to our city house. We did put up three signs. I had WEdnesday, Thursday off as I worked retail. So as I left work on Tuesday I came home to gather the terrier and headed down to the country house with hopes of finding the poodle. We had three numbers on the sign, the country house, my sons cell number( this dog is his baby)as he was three when she entered our life. He was crushed when we left the country house without her. When I pulled into the drive and I didn't see any signs of her I was crushed also. I let the terrier out and she went sniffing all over, both in the air and on the ground. She was so depressed with her buddy being missing. No messages on the machine, again I cried. Before I went to bed that night I walked up into the woods and talked to her, figuring by now she had died via a wild animal, or figured she had cralled off to die on her own. The next morning I was walking up to the garage to get the mower out and start working on the task of mowing. I had the phone with me and it range before I got to the garage. This was 4 nights later after she had gone missing. I was shocked when there was a guy on the phone that told me she wandered up into his yard that morning. She made it a mile down the road, which for a 10 pound dog that was 15 year old I was shocked she made it that far. I am thinking she found somewhere to eat as she hadn't lost any weight, was very thirsty. Oh and she slept for about 48 hours. She does not have a chip in her nor does she wear a collar as we have never had the need. Up till this time I have not had a dog go missing. This is the one dog I would have never thought would go missing. She is 100% off leash everywhere. So I don't think I would be so hard on owners that have dogs that go missing. It happens. Give your pups a hug tonight, you never know what tomorrow will bring. Sandy
