Why dot you adopt the dutchhound and,find new home/keep the pup

It's terrific that you're putting in the effort to locate the owners, if there are owners out there looking for the pups. I recommend you also call all area shelters, municipal pounds, law enforcement/animal control, and vets. You just never know who a potential owner might think to contact when trying to find a lost pet.

I'm glad the dogs were found by such caring people.

Kudos to you for caring for the pups, hopefully they can stay together, since they have obviously bonded.

obviously if the old owners, allowed their dogs to run wildly unsupervised,ie before they were found they ought not to own them in the first place- many things could have happened besides you finding them- pound pickup, hit by car,sold to research lab, bitten by rabid animal, Starved to death,ect.

I say finders keepers looser's weepers, besides they should go to PROPER homes not back to ones where the owner lets them run free.

Our dog had gotten out one night and nobody realized until the next morning. How he did that, we still don't know. That night, I heard dd call him asking if he wanted to go out so I assumed he was with her. He didn't come when she called and she assumed he was with us. The next day we were frantic. But luckily, someone had dropped him off at the local shelter which isn't very close to where we live. His collar with his tags were not on him and must have fallen off in his travels.

Not all dogs are left to roam free. I am just so thankful for the person who was kind enough to take my dog somewhere I would find him.

Now that we've learned our lesson, we always make sure that the dog (and cat) are somewhere in the house.

Yes, sometimes dogs get out. In the cas that the dogs may be microchipped, it would be good to sacn them (at a vet?).

However: these are two lucky animals to have fallen into your hands.

I'd check for mircochips, but honestly, a 8-9 week old puppy, what owner would allow such a young dog to roam? if you can get ahold of them I would seriously ask them if they ever had any pets before/what did they feed them/vet care ect/ you should lay low/ they may think your a stranger but if you play your cards right you will get all the info you need- if they sound emotional that is good sign they love the dogs - if their attatude is its jut a dog then, you know the dogs should be found another,better home.

I wouldn't assume neglectful owners for every lost dog. Sometimes even the most diligent owners have occasion to loose their dogs. Around here both the pound and the local police department keep a list of owners looking for dogs as well as a list of people who have found dogs. That is how I found my dog when he busted through the screen door, busted down the fence gate and ran like a bat out of hell because the neighbors were shooting off fireworks.

I hope these dogs owners are looking for them and find them. If not it sounds like they've found a good place to be.

I agree, people shouldn't be so quick to jump to the conclusion that any owner of a lost dog is a bad owner. Sometimes accidents happen, sometimes dogs get stolen, etc., etc. You won't know until the owner(s) turn up.

I know of an incident locally where a couple were having a domestic dispute and the guy took the woman's dog, drove off and just let it loose miles from home... some part of him was human enough not to kill the dog, but he knew that losing the dog would be devastating to the girlfriend. Talk about a monster... (The woman got reunited with the dog thanks to some flyers she posted.)

Well, we have waited for 4 days, and no response to our radio announcements, posters, calls....even took them in to be chipped. No luck!
I have decided that the little Daschund is going to a very good home. The gal who is taking her, I have known for a very long time. She is great with animals, and had lost her companion ealier this spring to old age. As for the black puppy, we are working on her "forever" home. I am not home enough to take on a puppy for training. She will be a medium size dog, not large, so I think we will not have too much of a problem finding her a home. We probably will never know what happened with these two. So many things could have happened. I know that accidents happen, very quickly. I was not going to judge the owners right off the bat, if they showed up. But I think that they might have been dumped off. :~( One thing that I thought of, was maybe someone was travelling, stopped for a break, and they got out without the owner knowing it. We will wait until this weekend to place both, if we find a home for the pup.

Yikes! 4 days is not long enough. Have you called the shelter, the police and put an ad in the paper? Check Craigslist as well. If they are licensed animals (even though they don't have tags) it's against the law to give them away.

I bet my last dollar the owner is looking for them. I'm suspicious a person would abandon a mini daschund. They are expensive and hard to find breeds.

Yes, we have checked all the resources here to find thier rightful owner. Paper, radio station, posters, calls, dog pound in all towns withing 15 miles....
We are in a very rural area. My town is around 400 people. We know EVERYONE! lol! Like I said, we are waiting until the weekend to even think of placing them. If the owners do show up later, with a good excuse, of course they will get them back. The folks that have them already have 3 large dogs and 4 large Macaws. They have no more room! I work alot lately, so I cannot take them and give them the attention and time they really need.
We will do right by these little gems, no matter what.

"already have 3 large dogs and 4 macaws"- GIVE THEM AWAY TO SOMEONE ELSE! those birds are lifelong companions that CAN outlive their caretakers,3 dogs too, HMM I'd say, your overwhelmed sorry, will not give you, your pets back.

They may love them but use your common sense macaws are big birds that are more needy then a child!. Unless they live on a farm or something, which I don't think they do I'd decline their offers..

Thank you Lilliepad. I was trying to figure out what runswalkin was concerned about. They have had the macaws for around 6 years now. I take care of them on the weekends that they leave town. (glad that isn't too often! lol!) They are a handfull! I am the only one that they trust with them. I have learned alot about bird handling. The pup has a new home. A young couple that was looking for a new family member. I am not so concerned about the owners looking for her. She is a "mutt", not a purebred, and again, we have done all we can to find the owners. She is a cutie though... As for the daschund, we are taking our time with her, but she needs to go to a good home soon. I have that gal that I wrote about earlier coming over Sat. morning to meet her. She know the whole story on them, and agrees that if the owners show up soon, she would be given back.

I wish that my life was not so hectic right now. I would love to raise a puppy again.

WOW, though I love Macaws and think they are beautiful. I think 4 is too much, Macaws can live to be up to 90 years old, so you have to write in your will who will care for them when you pass over, and they need lots of socializing time and training, a large dog isn't much easier but if I had to pick an easier pet I'd go for the dog!

If you have children you might want to talk with the owners and see if your kids could take on the parots when they die or get too old. You could have bird class with them or something to get them used to one another first, lol.

as far as people thinking how bad that people lost their dogs let me tell you a story. Last June we had a party at our country house. When it got dark we started to set up for doing fireworks. I took the two dogs, a toy poodle that was 15 at the time, and a toy fox terrier that is 6, and put them into the house. I didn't crate them as I figured that would be good enough. Everyone was on the deck, which is where the one door is. There is a front door but we don't really use it. To this day we don't know how it happened but some how the poodle went missing. I was so heart broken and sick over this. We made up signs but figured that we were in the country that a 10 pound poodle couldn't make it long out there. We looked that night, the next day, and I cried as I left to go back to our city house. We did put up three signs. I had WEdnesday, Thursday off as I worked retail. So as I left work on Tuesday I came home to gather the terrier and headed down to the country house with hopes of finding the poodle. We had three numbers on the sign, the country house, my sons cell number( this dog is his baby)as he was three when she entered our life. He was crushed when we left the country house without her. When I pulled into the drive and I didn't see any signs of her I was crushed also. I let the terrier out and she went sniffing all over, both in the air and on the ground. She was so depressed with her buddy being missing. No messages on the machine, again I cried. Before I went to bed that night I walked up into the woods and talked to her, figuring by now she had died via a wild animal, or figured she had cralled off to die on her own. The next morning I was walking up to the garage to get the mower out and start working on the task of mowing. I had the phone with me and it range before I got to the garage. This was 4 nights later after she had gone missing. I was shocked when there was a guy on the phone that told me she wandered up into his yard that morning. She made it a mile down the road, which for a 10 pound dog that was 15 year old I was shocked she made it that far. I am thinking she found somewhere to eat as she hadn't lost any weight, was very thirsty. Oh and she slept for about 48 hours. She does not have a chip in her nor does she wear a collar as we have never had the need. Up till this time I have not had a dog go missing. This is the one dog I would have never thought would go missing. She is 100% off leash everywhere.
So I don't think I would be so hard on owners that have dogs that go missing. It happens.
Give your pups a hug tonight, you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Update! Both of the dogs now have wonderful new homes! Both have been vet checked and chipped. The daschund is scheduled for her spaying next week. She is in wonderful condition. The vet figures around 3-4 years old. I thought maybe a bit younger, since she looked it from her coat and such. The little lab gal is busy being a normal pup. She has chewed the head off one of the kids barbie dolls! lol! The kids are now being trained on what it is like to have a puppy in the house. They simply adore her. The older gal will be doing 4H training with her early this spring.

Now if I could just talk my little guy out of what he thinks is his "right" everynight. He wants to go for a ride! CONSTANTLY!!! lol! This is my husbands fault! hehe!
