Glass Pantry Doors? Yay or Nay?

You know those glass pantry doors with the etching that says "Pantry" on them - yay or nay?

I have five doors in my smaller sized kitchen. I have a Garage door, Bathroom door and an Office/Den door. The other two doors are Pantry/Closet doors and they are smaller (about half the width of the regular doors). I was thinking that the glass "pantry" door could be cute for the door next to my fridge. The other small door is on the other side of the room near the bathroom and is more of a storage closet than pantry so I'm not sure what to do with that one.

Do you think adding "pantry" doors will make the room feel more doorsy or less doorsy? All of the doors drive me nuts!

Do you think they are trendy? They seem to be a new thing in the area we live in. I'm not sure if I want to jump on the trend wagon and end up hating the doors in 5 years when they aren't in style in more or look dated. Right now I think they are cute though.

Just looking for opinions and pictures if you have a glass pantry door.

My vote is trendy, as I've seen so many more of the "pantry" glass doors than I like to in homes in the last year.

Classic pantry doors would be more my style, but only you can decide if you want to follow the trend.

I don't think I've ever been in an older house or even an estate home where the pantry door says, "Pantry"; but I agree, it's whatever you like.

In fact, I've always wanted a vintage door for my bathroom to have a glass window with the old "bubble" glass and stencil "Restroom","Bath", or even just "Ladies" across it.

I struggle with the "shoes off" in the house policy. In theory, that would be my preference. And certainly in bad weather, my kids all take their shoes off. However, I have four kids, and two of them are outside playing all the time. They come in and out for a variety of reasons, so requiring them to take shoes off each and every time just isn't manageable (especially since one of them has fine motor skills problems, so just tying his shoes is difficult for him). I usually take mine off when I come inside, unless I'm wearing sneakers and coming from the store where I have to make multiple trips to the car. That said, I also have three entry points. The kids go in and out through the garage, which is underneath the main floor. If they are coming in and staying in, they usually leave their shoes in the garage just outside the door (a huge pile which I'm trying to organize - used to be a big basket but too many shoes, so now I have an organizer to put together, but not sure they will actually put their shoes in each compartment!). I always use the front door and kick my shoes off at the front door - there is a basket there by the door, so if I'm going out again later, I leave my shoes there, but if not I bring them upstairs to my closet. I wear slippers in the house. We also have a mudroom but it is accessible from the back door. There was a time when my kids always used it after school/coming home from somewhere, but now my key no longer works in the lock so they always use the garage instead. The mudroom, however, seems to store whatever shoes they haven't left in the garage (as well as shoes that are not in use regularly, like cleats, church shoes, etc). They each have their own cubby, and a basket for shoes in their cubby. I find it perfectly normal here where I live to see a basket of shoes near the front door. The only houses where I don't see them are my friends' homes who have homes that are more formal (don't look very lived in), or if they have a mudroom or other main entry for family. I just read the two posts above mine and see that they both have four kids like me. I had to laugh at choclot b/c her battle sounds like mine! Mine each have their own cubbies and STILL I find their things all over the mudroom - coats laying on the bench instead of hanging on the hook, shoes on the floor *right next to* their shoe basket, socks they've taken off and left in their cubbies and then wonder why they have no socks after I do laundry! I do call them from wherever they are to fix their mistakes, but much of the time I'm off doing something else and don't notice right away. My kids are 8, 10, 12 and turning 14. My oldest has actually become very organized (she keeps all her shoes in an organizer up in her bedroom after years of using the mudroom), hangs her coat in her room, etc. My 12 y/o is a slob, but he is incredibly organized with his schoolwork, binder, etc and judging from what I hear from his friends' mothers whose boys are constantly losing things, forgetting to turn in schoolwork, etc, I figure I'll take that over him not putting his shoes away properly!

thank you to all who replied! I made my husband read the thread and he's on board with the sink. And we'll heed the advice and put in a larger sink than just a small hand sink also. And the husband and I are martini drinkers, so I'll add that into the pros column for the island sink ;) One quick question for those of you with a sink in place -- the husband asked me about centering the sink on the island directly behind the range. Thoughts? Perhaps if the sink was larger this may make sense. But I also wonder if it will take the focus off the centerline between our range and the fireplace in the family room?

North Iowa here.. What no one on this thread understands is there are no "green spaces" here. We have Habitat ReStore. We have Menard's or maybe Lowe's or Home Depot. Iowa people help each other all the time. Craig's list has junk. I did a kitchen gut 10+ years ago with Menard's hickory cabinets and laminate counters. No back splash. Existing Vinyl floor. Used my just fine white appliances. My house was built in 1880 so no open concept here. My kitchen is a room. A small room by comparison to almost all kitchens on here. I had a handyman who worked cheap. I had known him for at least 30 years so when I left for work I knew he'd deal with whatever came along. He was gone when I got home and I did clean up. I also did the gutting of the old kitchen; dead mice in the light fixture but he warned me about the potential so I was prepared. Maybe I was very, very lucky but I got a great kitchen for $10,000. I don't know what inflation would do to that price today. Compared to what I started with I now have a palace. You are a long way from final plans and I think you will do just fine. It takes a lot of price comparison shopping to get there. And shopping on eBay and Menard's sales. Don't over look the consignment shops. If you do Menard's cabinets wait until they have the 11% off. If you visit the cabinet people there regularly and tweak your layout, you will find people you really like and who like you and they will tell you when the sales are coming up. You can also make your own laminate counters for cheap. I didn't do that 4 inch backsplash thing and even though I didn't do any other kind of backsplash, I'm glad I didn't add it. Right now I have wallpaper but I'm thinking I might tile some paneling that's cut to fit so that if I get tired of it I can pull it off and put something else there.

Silhouette window shadings would work better in this kind of window configuration. They are the horizontal version of the Luminette privacy sheers. Love the look of the Luminette but I don't think they will look right in that space. Silhouette Privacy Sheers

I think glass doors would be fine.

It's the "Pantry" part that I think would be trendy.

An option would be to get plain glass doors and then use frosted window film to spell out "Pantry." That way, if you got tired of it, you could easily change it.

I've only seen model(new)homes with a glass door that has 'pantry' etched into it~~I think it's trendy also. I've been searching for a vintage door for my pantry, with an oval glass insert. I might have to get it frosted since I don't really think I would like to look at cans/boxes/cat food. ;o)

i would agree that it's trendy to have the word pantry spelled out and i think i would tire of the word-esp since you have 2 doors you're considering.

but, i think a frosted or otherwise opaque/semi-opaque glass door on the 2 smaller doors would be really nice and would break up the doors in your kitchen. i know HD has many choices of glass doors in lots of sizes that you can order---take a look at all the styles! ('pantry' being one of them i think-at least with one of the door companys they sell...)

Thank you all for your opinions. I feel like I'll get tired of seeing "pantry" etched out and it does seem fairly trendy which is why I asked in the first place. You confirmed my hunch. I really like it now but its something I can see myself getting tired of and we don't plan on staying in our house forever so its probably better to keep things simple.

I'll check out some other options for glass doors to see if there is something different I can do to break it up but the doors will probably end up staying as is.

Our pantry door is a six panel and the flat sections are chalkboard. The lower sections are great for little ones to draw on and upper sections work great for notes and grocery lists.

I'd also skip the wording. I love reeded glass which is less see through than a clear pane.
The plain frosted glass is getting done a lot too, but is better than with the word "pantry" on it.

justgotabme - how did you get the chalkboard on the door panels? Paint? I want a chalkboard on my pantry door, just not sure how to do it. I also need a ledge for the chalk so it won't fall everytime someone opens the door. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I vote YES for glass doors - prefer frosted with either Pantry on them or get something w/just a design on it.
I had a glass door with Laundry - put on my laundry room - mainly because the hall is narrow and it has the garage door, powder room door, bedroom door and 2 closet doors. I really like that the sun shines thru the glass and it makes it less clostraphobic.

Yes for the glass doors, no to the "panty" lettering. This is coming from a person who hates kitchy, eclectic things so take that with a grain of salt. :)
