Are we nuts?

All our friends & family think so---We can't seem to be happy with a few pets and enjoy having a zoo full. We have four dogs ( all rescued from the pound ) and we are now considering cat number 6. A little background on the cats--when we were married 12 years ago I had 2 & DH had 2 we then adopted brother & sister kittens giving us a total of 6. Over the years we lost all but one of the six to old age. I was very happy to be down to 1 for awhile but,about a year ago we got suckered in to a black kitty & then a stray showed up on our doorstep & adopted us giving us 3. In May we adopted 3 pure white DSH sisters to only lose one to Giardia a week later. So now we have 5 but when I took the babies to the vet this morning I fell in love with a med hair solid black kitty that is only a week older than my white babies (the vets office also does cat rescue adoptions--hows that for drumming up more business LOL). As I type I think my husband went back to the vet to adopt the black kitty-that would give us 2striped,2 white & 2 black cats total.I am on my way to work so I won't know until I get home. So are we crazy or just animal lovers?

I think it is wonderful that you have a home filled with loved, precious pets. Don't question yourself and just enjoy them. They are truly gifts to us and you and your husband are gifts to them for giving them all a wonderful family- More power to YOU!

My husband and I are in a similar situation, except we have more cats than you, and only 2 dogs. I don't think you are crazy at all, as long as you have the resources to take good care of them there is nothing wrong with providing a home for lots of critters.

I realize I'm coming late to this party, since the thread has been going for a bit now. I try to put in as many new planting areas each year as I can. Less lawn the better. Last year, when it appeared that gasoline would be maybe $5 to $8 a gallon by now, it was somewhat easier to convince skeptical family members that this was a good thing. It will be somewhat less so this year, but hey, they'll get over it. I'm the one that does all of the outdoor work anyway, so it really shouldn't be a big concern for them. I have my eye this year on an area towards the back of my 2nd acre that's about 80 feet wide by 40 feet long. It's at the top of a hill with fairly sandy, loam soil and a southern exposure, with a slight slope. I do have a bit of a deer problem around here, and I'm considering putting some of my sand-loving, more deer resistant crops like potatos, groundcherries, quinoa, garlic, and tomatillos up there, with drip irrigation and black plastic, so that I can plant some of the more deer vulnerable crops in my lower garden, closer to the house, and fence them off. I'm not at all convinced that the price decline in oil/gasoline is permanent by any means. The theory of "Peak Oil" certainly does explain a lot of the economic turmoil going on around the world. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if gasoline prices climbed right back up there within the next year or two, as crazy as the economic situation seems today. The good news is that I have proven able to grow far more food than I and my immediate family can possibly eat, so I have it to share with others. The bad news on that front is that, last year, I had trouble giving away perfectly good, high-quality produce because I kept encountering an attitude of "we don't like that" or "we don't really cook." I found this rather sad. I would encourage anyone interested to grow as much of their own food as possible. Only speaking for myself, of course, but I've always been a little around the bend but have gone even further around since discovering the SCM forum. While I try not to spend too much time here and have many other forums to visit (as well as the occasional thing to do IRL), this one just draws me. Partly cause I love compost but also cause I'm always intrigued to see what other people think and do. I'm a confirmed people watcher and am always amazed at human nature. I've learned a lot from many of you and probably won't be able to stay away for long even tho I now know everything there is to know about compost. haha

Tinker if this is what you want to do, I say go ahead. You have outlined your situation and it sounds like you understand full well what you're getting into. That said, a couple of stories: We have lived in the same neighborhood for 15 years. We rented for about 6 or 7 years, then started to house hunt--only in our neighborhood. We found THE house. We bid higher than reasonable and were confident we would get it, and didn't. It was bought by a developer for 30% more, who reconfigured the antique house so that the lot could be split and added two really ugly condos. We were aghast, and I can't believe I still have to look at that thing every day (we pass it on the way to dd's school). It was the best thing that ever happened to us, because we learned that you can lose your dream home, and life goes on, and unbelievably, better dream homes came along. We bid on 3 more "dream homes" in our neighborhood, getting a little more cocky and skeptical every time. I live in the fifth house we tried to buy, 4 years later, and we're very happy with it. We got a great deal, and it's head and shoulders above the first house we went for. So, as much as this house speaks to you, keep in mind, other houses can still do that too. I recommend taking 48 hours and looking around in some other places, with a different realtor. Look on craigslist--you will see things that don't show in mls listings. I have a friend that was house hunting in two of the most expensive towns in our area, my modest mid-range town wasn't even on her list. But she stumbled on a listing in Craigslist, and now has twice as much house, just as good a commute, and far better schools than she expected. Before you commit to this house, think outside the box. Heck I wish 2000 people like you would descend on Galveston, TX and invest in those crumbling victorians. Or Brunswick, GA. Finally, if you are open to spending that kind of money on preservation, from a stewardship standpoint, it makes more sense to spend the money on a house that won't be torn down when you move on. Could you look in a more historic district where these types of homes are valued? If you can live with the idea of your work being undone, then I guess you're ok, but knowing with certainty that the work I put into my house would be ripped up would drive me nuts. But that's just me.

You are always going to have folks who THINK new is better. It's the way they are wired. A good many of those folks are in the real estate profession. They are looking at things from the point of the bottomline. Not always the best place to measure success from. I'd start by finding a different contractor. When it comes to contractors you generally have two types the one ones who like new because it's fast and easy and it fattens their wallets with a quick turn around and the the ones who are masters and will work with you to save what they can. Generally speaking the latter is more costly but they also have the advantage of being better problem solvers and better at their craft. There seems to be a point of pride they carry which the gut and build guys just don't have. That house has character. It has a good location and if you can afford to fix it up so it maintains that charm then I'd go for it. You fell in love with it as it is. Fixed up and maintained somebody else in the future will love it just as much if not more. My biggest rule in home ownership is go with your gut. If your gut tells you it's better to save it than flatten it them do it.

I am not a qualified person to properly determine if you are nuts or not.

However, for me, three large dogs is the absolute limit. If I did not have my situation where I am home lots of the time, it would never work. I simply must have order and tranquility in my life, and I can't imagine that with so many creatures in the same space.

I had two for a very long time, it's a long story how I got the third. On more than one occasion, I have had the opportunity to have another, but I keep reminding myself, I just can't do it.

Thanks for the kind words! As I suspected my husband did go get the new black kitty & he is already bonding with the other animals. He is so lovable & friendly & is showing no fear of his new siblings which is a good sign. And they are taking to him too--I think he will be a good fit in our zoo.
All the animals are alot of work & I haven't taken a vacation away from home in 14 years but that is fine with me since I am a homebody by choice anyway. It is such a good feeling knowing I have rescued another sweety.

You would be in violation of three city ordnances here---max. 3 dogs, 3 cats, or variation up to 3.

Out in the country---you probably could have 20 dogs/cats---more power to ya!!!!

Handymac---shhhhhh-don't tell but we are already breaking the village ordinance by one dog.Village rules are 3 dogs & 3 cats but I have come across plenty of people with more who didn't even know their was a limit. Our County code is any property under 1 acre can have up to ten animals so we are good there. The way I look at it is it's my property & the village can kiss my a** Our property is well maintained, spottlessly clean inside & out & our animals don't bother anyone. The cats are all indoors and the dogs are only outside with me in our fenced yard. We will eventually screen in our back patio again (old enclosure destroyed by hurricane) for the cats so they can go "outside" to enjoy the birds & lizzards. It is so cute to see them laying by the patio door making bird noises. I would love to let them out to let them roam the yard but I would be afraid one might get out of the fence & hit by a car. I had a nightmare recently that one of my white babies was in the yard and it was being swallowed by a Boa & I reached in the snakes mouth & pulled her out even though I am terrified of snakes. LOL I will never watch "snakes on a plane" again.

Hey, what's 1 more, right??? If I had my way, I'd also have a "zoo"...But DH and I are getting up in years and I'd hate to think what might happen if we weren't here...We do have 3 inside fur babies and 3 semi ferals that live on our back porch...

We have lotsa pets too, four cats, and one dog, had three but re homed 2. Two of the cats are mine, the other two are as following one is my moms the other one my dads. The dog ,Shadow is moms,too.

Here is the lowdown on my two cats, Bindi/leopalorn

Bindi, a black moggy with a possible feral parent background, mom was a stray, dad wasn't known, was a 'free kitten' gift from my dads ex girlfriend, Leopalorn is a purebred Somali,from Artshow, Ray and Sandy benter, are the breeders which live in Iowa. Though their childhoods and parents couldn't be more different I find Bindi to be the more loving and wise of the two, Leopalorn is a strange cat he cries when you pet him but comes back for more, he makes these weird sounds like a wild animal, bird calls,trills,ect. And he tends to smother me when he sleeps with me. But he is loving, very active and likes to eat, thats his favrote thing, is eating, Also he's the quickest to play.
