How big is your prep sink?

I've been warned not to make my secondary prep sink too small, so I'm wondering what size those of you who have one have found works well. It will go in a 24" base cabinet. Thanks!

Mine is the Ticor S805. It's 13" x 16-1/2", and it has been perfect for us. It can fit my biggest colander easily and it can hold whatever veggies I'm washing. I believe our base cab there is only 18", so it would easily fit in yours.

That sounds perfect. Now if only I can figure out if I can really do an undermount in a wood counter!

Lisa...I think in your kitchen you could go either way. Regardless of where your (main) sink ends up, it will still be close to the cooktop & you will have room to prep b/w them. If the sink moves to the refrigerator wall, you will have even more prep space b/w them. While a prep sink would be nice, I don't think it's a necessity to make your kitchen work. Yes, it would add an additional prep area for you at the island (b/c there will be a water source) and, possibly, reduce some zone crossing, depending on the location. Right now, to get to the refrigerator from the cooktop you have to either cross the Cleanup Zone or go around the island. How many people will be using your kitchen at once? Will they all be prepping/cooking or will there be a mix of prepping/cooking/cleaning up? If cleaning up is in the mix, then the zone crossing could become an issue, especially when the DW is open. As to location, I like Elizpiz's setup best, but I can see where it would definitely reduce available counter space. If you put it on the left side across from the cooktop, it would be readily available from the cooktop as well as the "outside" part of the island for prepping there while someone else is cleaning up on the "inside" as well as be available for outsiders for a drink of water, etc. However, it will reduce that 42-1/4" to approx approx 24" of workspace directly across from your cooktop; but, as I mentioned b/f, you will still have add'l room on the wall run. If you put it on the refrigerator end, I think you're right in your assessment...I find that I use the counters across from both my refrigerator & ovens much more than the counter next to them...both for removing things from them as well as staging things to put in them. (I have approx 32" b/w the Ref & DR peninsula end and approx 44" b/w the ovens & the end of the "mini peninsula". Both have landing space right next to them as well.) We do have a prep sink, but in our kitchen it was a necessity to make it work. Our cooktop & sink are opposite each other, separated by approx 6'6" of aisle...the main aisle through the kitchen. By adding a prep sink on the cooktop wall, we were able to separate the Cleanup Zone from the Prep & Cooking Zones as well as protect both zones from kitchen traffic (inside a "U" w/short legs but long base). During the week, there are usually two of us in the kitchen...one prepping/cooking (me) and one cleaning up (DH) with an occasional child helping make veggies. On the weekend, there are sometimes all four of us working in the kitchen! When baking (usually a marathon!), there are usually two or three of us. (I seem to bake in spurts...when I bake, I seem to go all out!)

Like Ivette, our prep sink is in the corner of our island, accessible from two sides (and we both tend to be working in the kitchen at the same time, so we are often both in need of the sink for something), a few steps from the fridge, and a pivot away from the rangetop and ovens. I think whether you need -- or even want -- a prep sink depends ENTIRELY on how you cook, how MANY of you cook at once, and what you kitchen layout looks like. In our case, we decided to follow an architect's advice and put the large, main cleanup sink in the former butler's pantry, between the dining room and the kitchen/family room. That put that main sink an unacceptable distance from the cooking area, hence the prep sink. We do have a trash pullout next to the prep sink -- so trimmings, etc. go straight off the counter and into it. If I had to haul the garbage across the room, I would use the sink FAR less than I do (which is constantly!) We don't have a disposal in either sink (because of septic/well), so we have a double trash pullout (one trash, one recycling) next to the main sink, and a single one next to the prep sink. We found it helpful to 'virtually' walk through several scenarios of cooking/food prep as we were designing this kitchen: holiday cooking (lots of hands on deck), family dinners, parties, etc. We could immediately see the need for the second sink as soon as we did this. If you can, I highly recommend 'walking through' some common scenarios in your home -- either virtually, using a computer layout, or in real time/real life in your kitchen. We even marked out the island size in tape on the floor, and experimented with moving around the space with the distances we'd allocated. Quite a process, but we ended up with a kitchen that works like an absolute dream! But if you don't have the room or the need for a second sink ... by all means, skip it! I think it's one of those things that's become a mantra but which is used, in many instances, where there is just no reason for it -- it becomes more of a bar sink. I'd say if you think you'll use it mostly to fill pots or tea kettles (for instance), get a pot filler instead. Here's our kitchen layout -- you'll see why we needed one! Small kitchens: how big is your primary prep space?

The room that holds the kitchen here is not small, at 14 ft x 17 ft. But the ceiling is only 7 ft, and the working part of the kitchen is concentrated in a 14 ft x 10 ft area on one side of the room. The other side is a traffic corridor -- between the dining room, the back door/laundry room, and the bathroom. Before our mini-reno three years ago, the only real prep space was the 30" stretch of counter between the cooktop and the sink. The old double enamel sink was functionally a small single sink, since the far side was given over full time to a dish drainer. Behind and to the left of the prep counter, several steps away, a worktable against the wall offered about a foot of space along its front edge -- helpful for assembling spices or putting aside prepped items, but a little too narrow for any real preparation work. An expanse of work surface materialized -- just under four feet square -- when that long worktable was turned short side to the wall to form a peninsula. A bit more prep surface was tucked in by moving a rolling cart from the other end of the room into the space between the worktable and the wall oven and topping it with a big cutting block. Now, just by turning, I can put aside prepped ingredients, and do tasks that need a lot more space or a bit more leverage (a benefit of the worktable's lower height). This arrangement also makes it possible for both of us to cook at the same time despite the snugness of the kitchen's active-cooking corner. I can slice on the cutting block on the cart or mix/assemble on the worktable while the SO's at the stove, or the main prep counter, or the sink. Neither of us realized how how dramatically the new sink itself would expand that primary prep space -- effectively doubling it. The big single sink fit perfectly into the cutout for the 50-year-old double sink it replaced, but does a lot more with the space. The stainless grid rack that sits on the base of its vast interior provides a level, dry surface. With the drain set well off to the right side, the grid makes the sink base a real adjunct to the prep counter. All kinds of tasks happen right in there, at a more convenient height and in an environment made to handle mess: straining and quick-chilling stock, using the food mill, buzzing things with the immersion blender, wringing the liquid out of yogurt or salted vegetables.. The grid is also a space for hands-off prep, such as thawing frozen items in water or draining salted vegetables in a colander. There's room for these things to go on undisturbed while someone washes produce or fills a filtered water pitcher at the drain end of the sink. When there's not strenuous faucet action, cookware and utensils can drip dry on the grid, leaning on the sink walls -- a powerful aid to washing as you go along. That's not prep, strictly speaking, but it happens during prep.

General guidelines for MW placement... Best location...MWs (and refrigerators) should be on the periphery of the kitchen so they are (1) easily accessed by those working inside the kitchen and (2) easily accessed by those from outside the kitchen who may be looking for a snack or other use without interfering with those working in the kitchen. Second best location...Inside or just outside the Prep and/or Cooking Zone b/c that's where it's used the most. Less desirable location...In the Cleanup Zone, especially over the DW or anywhere taking up needed cleanup work space. You don't want to be tripping over an open DW or getting in the way of someone cleaning up while trying to use the MW. Bad location...Over the range b/c you have to reach over a hot stove and hot food (think steam from boiling water wafting up or greasy smoke from browning meat or frying as you try to use the MW or even check the food that's in the MW; if you have gas, you're reaching over a flame. Additionally, it is too high for the majority of people to truly use safely...i.e., they're above the head & neck level. Oh, and OTR MWs are notoriously bad vent/range hoods b/c of inadequate venting as well as inadequate coverage of the cooking surface (you need coverage that extends past the front burners by about 3 inches to capture the steam/smoke/grease/odors/etc.). [These MWs are also more expensive and shorter than other MWs...countertop or built-in. On OTR MW may also lock you into a specific brand in the future b/c of sizing and installation procedure.] Ideal installation height...Between your waist and chest, inclusive for "regular" MWs with a door (i.e., above your hip and below your neck). With a regular MW, you have to reach inside and pull food out to check/remove so you don't want it so high that you're in danger of spilling it on you as you reach up and in and you don't want it so low you have to squat to get to the food inside. MW Drawers can be below your waist b/c the drawer comes out from under the counter when open and you can simply reach down & stir or place/remove food. Ideally, the MW should also be near a water source as many items that are MW'd need water added to them (leftovers, veggies, etc.) However, the periphery location is more important as it's easier to bring water to the MW or take the dish to the sink than it is to work around someone else using the MW. Our MW Drawer is in the Prep Zone. Unfortunately, we did not have a periphery location so we had to settle for the "second best" location. But, it is near a sink and it is out of the way of people working at the cooktop. We also have two primary Prep Zones, so it hasn't been much of an issue...only very occasionally. Even if you decide to go the route of the MW over the wall oven, I would consider having your builder put it in a MW alcove (with finished sides/top/bottom on the inside) instead of building it in so you can place the MW inside the alcove but not build it in. As others have said, most MWs do not last as long as other appliances and will need to be replaced. It is much easier and less expensive to remove & replace a MW sitting in an alcove than one built-in. You also will not need a Trim Kit if you place the MW in an alcove instead of building it in. Just remember to make the alcove big enough for a full-size MW + air clearances on all sides, top, and back + plug. If you're putting it in a cabinet for a 27" or 30" oven, width & depth should not be a problem (a 24" wide x 23"D opening should be plenty of width/depth). Don't forget about height as well. You will also need an outlet inside the alcove to plug the MW in. And, be sure the inside of the alcove is finished to, preferably, match your cabinets. This may require "skins" to put on the inside (if so, be sure to include the thickness of the skins in your calculation of the inside space).

Our base cabinet is 20 inches with a sink about the size of Holligators...14 1/2" x 16", I think. I wouldn't want it to be smaller, but it works great for veggie prep, filling and draining large pots, etc...It only seemed a little small when I decided to try to wash out my 15 1/2" cast iron skillet in it. ;-D If you handwash your pots and pans, and might want to do that in the prep sink, you might try to get the largest you can in your cabinet.

Will probably be filling & draining large pots of pasta in the prep sink since it's near the stove, but any washing will be done in the main sink.

Here is my prep sink, I am probably one who warned against going to small. I wanted a prep sink that was big enough to not seem useless. I also have larger main sink & pot filler. I am however cooking for a very large family.

Along with size, consider depth. Some prep sinks can be shallow and the water can come right back at you when you drain a pot or run the tap on high! Mine is 8" deep, and I wouldn't want it to be any shallower. Even at that, the kids occasionally swing the faucet outside the sink and create a mini Niagara Falls!

We went with a full size sink at the recommendation of our KD, which we had the room. It was a good recommendation.

Ours will be a 16W x 19 front to back undermount, 9" deep. It's going into a 24" cabinet on Friday so I can let you know better after I see it if it is too big. I'm a little worried right now that I won't be able to get the faucet, soap dispenser and air switch where I want them. But I wanted a prep sink big enough to prep and clean up in since this will be my main sink unless I have a full house of visitors. We're empty nesters now so the farmhouse sink probably be used less than our prep sink.

I have a Franke EuroPro that's 18" X 16", undermounted, in wood. We treated our wood with pure tung oil cut with citrus solvent. Over two years and no problems whatsoever with the wood, and believe me, the sinks are heavily used.

I've never had 2 sinks so it's hard for me know how much I'll use it. It's in a barrier island (btw. fridge & main sink)so I'm imagining I'll use it quite a bit. Acountry farm - what are the dimensions on yours? That's a really nice size. (LOVE your kitchen BTW!) My island is 6' long but only 24" deep (well, counter is 28 or so). I hadn't thought about the depth much - certainly don't want my pasta water splashing back up at me! Trying to balance sink size with not eating up too much counter space... Thanks for everyone's input so far!

I saw your sink in the finished kitchens slideshow. Even made a note to show it to DH. SO happy to hear you haven't had any problems with it!! You don't know how badly I want that prep sink to be undermount! Yours is just what I imagined.

I saw your other threads and wanted to pipe up to say yes! Go for the undermount with your wooden counters. Everyone told me I "couldn't" do an undermount with my copper counters, either, but we figured out a way and I've never looked back. It's SO handy for wiping crumbs into it, etc. My prep sink is 15" around and 9" deep, which is a great just-big-enough size:

I have the Ticor 905 stainless steel undermount sink for prep. It is 16" wide (it's round) & 8.5" deep. I love it and think it is just the right size for me for a prep sink. I also love the sink grid it came with (from Galaxy Tool Supply).

This is the second sink in the island of my current kitchen. I love it and plan to use the same size when I remodel. It's large enough for soaking pans and deep enough to drain pasta safely.

Our prep sink is 15-3/4" x 15-3/4" x 7-1/2" (plus 1-1/8" granite depth = 8-5/8" total depth). It's big enough to work in and big enough to fit all my colanders and all my pots for filling, although I find filling the pots on the counter much easier.

When we were shopping for a sink, our KD told us any sink less then 12" in each direction would be useless as a prep sink...now that I have my sink & have worked with it, I have to agree. Actually, I might even say any that's not at least 15" in each direction would be useless b/c I don't think a sink any smaller than mine would be as useful for prepping. You have to have room for your hands + whatever you're working with inside the sink.

Our sink is in a 36" corner sink base. In a "regular" sink base, a sink base at least 17" wide would be fine.

Ours is a smaller prep sink it's 11x13, we just had the new Grohe faucet put in last year, we also had a garberator put in too. Works great.

Thanks for all your input everyone!! I've narrowed it down to the Ticor 805 or 905. Kinda think the round looks cool. "Chatting" ;-) with my builder about the undermount issue tomorrow!

Ours is the Elkay ELU1316. As the model number indicates, it is approximately 13" wide and 16" long. Also about 8" deep. It matches the main sink, which is an Elkay ELUH361710.

Similar to lacombes setup, both sinks have Grohe Ladylux Cafe faucets, and both have Insinkerator disposers (smaller 1/2 hp model on the prep sink.)
