How Big is Your Prep Sink?
Comments (5)Mine is somewhere between 15 and 16" nearly square and I wouldn't go any smaller. With a round sink, you are going to lose some space from all the corners, and if it is bowl shaped, you will lose even more inside adn colanders or pans won't sit down in it. It will probably work for you, I would prefer straighter sides rather than bowl or basin like, and I sure wouldn't go any smaller. For a round, I might prefer 18" if that is possible....See MoreHow big is your prep sink?
Comments (3)Mine is approx 18 x 16" (outside measurements). It works pretty well. I wouldn't want smaller, as it's great for emptying pots into my colanders, and working on veggies...having plenty of room for a good batch and to deal with them without bashing my knuckles on the sides of the sink. In my 'dream kitchen' I would probably have a 24" or even 30" sink, so I could also hand wash my cast iron pots and skillets....See MoreHow small can a prep sink be and still be useful?
Comments (10)This is incredibly useful - thank you so much everyone!!! Buehl and lastcatx - oohhhhh, yes, setting up mock-up box and taking the colander to a store are perfect ideas. (amazing how obvious something seems _after_ someone kindly points it out to you :) debsan- your watermelon made me laugh! holligator and kidshop - it's so helpful to know that this sink works for you the way we want it to work for us. (I love how people know that serial numbers of these products - me, I can rattle off a whole bunch of faucet numbers now) pirula - Good point - We do have some seriously honkin pots! I hear you on the multi-clean-up and multi-cook wishful thinking. I'm beginning to think, though, that since DH is a fabulous cook, our 2-person kitchen design may be less about me getting to be in the kitchen to help prep/cook, than me getting to be in the kitchen to help keep it clean.... zelmar - good to hear the balance works for you - it's been a real roadblock for us too. judeny - it's relief to hear that someone else finessed the edge of the cabinet - I've been saying "oh, we'll just shave off/cut out the sides of the cabinet," and I've started to worry that I'm just delusional. again - thank you all!!...See MoreHow big is your prep sink?
Comments (9)I don't think a sink with any dimension less than 12" will be very useful for much more than a bar sink...i.e., getting a drink of water or using it as an ice bucket (filling with ice and putting drinks in it). Our sink is 15-3/4" x 15-3/4" and I sometimes wish it were more like 18" x 18"...but I've never wished it were smaller! If you plan to use the island for any prepping, I think you'll find you will use that sink a lot more than you realize. So, rather than go with a small sink, get one that you know you can also prep at. Oh, and do yourself a favor, if you plan to have a garbage disposal, put one on both sinks! Something I let my DH talk me out of for the Prep Sink! "His" sink, the Cleanup Sink has one; but "my" sink, the Prep Sink doesn't...and I really wish it did! Do yourself a favor, get the 15" x 15"! Here's mine: Note that once it's installed, it doesn't really look that big...here it is in the "big picture" (It's in the lower right corner where the seating peninsula is.)...See Moredetroit_burb
