I have a cousin who is into genealogy. She's been working for y-e-a-r-s on our family's history. It's a tough job; we come from a long, multi-generational line of gypsies and wanderers who never seemed to settle for long, didn't leave much in the way of legal, or even written, records, and some members have been known to change the facts from time-to-time for various reasons.

I asked if she thought she'd have any luck finding out anything about my father. My off-and-on attempts to locate him, beginning in the early 1980s, has never panned out.

This morning I mentioned his full name and where he lived when he married Mom.

This afternoon she had this info...

Basil Odell Collins was born on April 1, 1930. His parents were Lee Washington Collins and Anthia Elizabeth Collins (maiden name Stubbs), all born in Missouri. His siblings in 1930 were Audnis Collins, age 10, Herlius Collins, age 6, Howard Collins, age 2. In the '80s I spoke to another brother, my uncle, named "James" who was in Houston, TX at the time.

According to Social Security records my father passed away on July 9, 1992 in Anderson, Shasta County, California.

I am Carol Collins. Daughter of Basil Collins; grand daughter of Lee and Anthia Collins; niece to Audnis Collins, Herlius Collins, Howard Collins, and James Collins. (Unless "James" is a middle name for Howard.)

In all my life I've never known the name of any other related "Collins" except for the one on my birth certificate.

She's now working on finding the five brothers I have from the Collins side. I have four brothers from my Mom; I have five brothers from my Father. I just knew I was special! LOL

Back-story...My cousin is, of course, Grandma's grand daughter. She is the daughter of Grandma's daughter, L., from Grandma's (supposed) first marriage to Mr. Whisenhunt. I am the daughter of Grandma's daughter, W., from her second marriage to Mr. Richards.

Cousin has learned, and found the legal proof, that our dear Grandmother had a marriage no one knew about.

She found the marriage license for her (Cousin's) grandfather Mr. Whisenhunt, but Grandma's name was listed as C. Mowler. Much more sleuthing, and help from several counties, Cousin found a marriage license for Grandma, C. Phelps, to the unknown Mowler.

Oh what a tangled web we weave...and nearly 100 years later it's so hard to unravel.

My Grandma, the prim and proper, ultra-strict, Ruler of the Clan...had a secret marriage. Oh my, when I get to Heaven she's gonna have some 'splanin' to do!

if you want to get some free stuff go to the mormon church site..they don't charge like the others do now...

btw you can get (for a fee) your father's original ss form...

piegirl, I admire your tenacity. We are trying to finish this remodel over the next month, (an agressive goal) because it was already pretty close to the end when I resumed it with this new contractor, or so I thought. That was BEFORE GW! Now that I know so-ooo much more, everyone is in Real Trouble! The next few months are the busiest of the year in my profession. When I resumed the idea of finishing the bath in late November, I thought we might have it done by Christmas. When I decided to change tubs, (I learned about GW somewhere in here) I was sure it would be done by January. Once I learned about Panasonic WW, Kerdi, heated floors and towel racks, February has eluded me! Ah, March through May ... my busy season. When we a photographing high school seniors for their graduation invitations and photographing their Proms, and they are 'ravenous' to get their 'stuff '! THAT'S WHEN I AM FINISHING MY BATHROOM! Pretty smart on my part, huh? :( I would have been much smarter to wait until summer, but I was fearful that something else would happen to deter me. And besides, I PROMISED my daughters a soak in that wonderful Tub! So if you guys notice me 'going a little crazy' over the next few weeks when I write in to vent, just say to yourselves, "she's gonna be awright, it's her busy season, you know!" So piegirl, if you spent 'hours' researching for a whole house over a year's time, you will be my inspiration! I will try to remember that this is just part of the process. And you're right, those victorius AHAH! moments are awesome! hamster, I laughed out loud at the "task lighting" brand of lighting products. It IS wonderful to have some place to go to ask even the simplest questions. I have a feeling that when I show my 'doubting Thomas' friends some of these posts, they will just tell me that I have found a bunch of electronic friends who are just as anal and nuts as I am! "...since he's found me he's been given a new lease of life" Sure sweetie, he'll be a regular Mother Theresa now that he has you in his life. Reading too many romance novels are we? Sorry if I am coming off harsh, and I realize I don't speak for everyone here, their opinion might be a little more forgiving than mine. But as someone who's been put through the same hell by my piece of sh*t ex-wife that you are putting your husband though, I feel extremely entitled to offer my opinion, since you asked for opinions. I too was a "good honest man" (still am...lol!) who did not deserve it. I was always completely faithful to her. I worked my butt off getting a software business off the ground so my ex could be a stay-at-home for our two kids, which is what we both wanted from the start. And instead of being appreciated for working long days and weekends, then coming home and being a good dad and working on the house and all that, she eventually winds up resenting me for not being around enough and winds up having an affair with someone...which I didn't find out about for 9 months. When I found out, I said I understood (to a point) why she did this and wanted to fix our issues, and resolved to change some things make our marriage better. She said she wanted this too....but her heart was never really in it. Three years later she did it again....this time I told her I was done and we are now amicably divorced (on the surface anyway) and sharing custody or our two kids 50/50. I say "on the surface" because when I think of what she did to me, not only the affairs, but to string me along for years...knowing she wanted out but not having the courage to act like an adult end our marriage the right way before shopping for her next man, my blood freaking boils. I can't explain it, but I feel like I lived years of my life now in some giant lie...I was happy and thought things were pretty good. Good people DO NOT treat people like this. She completely disregarded me as a person, and did what was best for her, with NO regards for my feelings. I didn't matter at all....my pain was just "collateral damage" to her in getting what she wanted. To this day (5 yrs later), while I deal with her respectfully on a daily basis regarding the kids, deep down I wish nothing but bad things for her. The scars of being treated like this, by someone that you loved and treated with nothing but respect for 10+ years, do not heal easily. I suspect they never will. I (half) jokingly tell my friends that I just hope she dies before me so that I can take a big sh*t on her grave, as my final revenge. Well, now you know how your "good honest man" of a husband will feel about you when he finds out. And I hope your daughters do turn on you...you f*cking deserve it. Thanks pattico for the link. My neighbors were commenting on these the other day and couldn't believe they were something I made myself. I do plan on bringing them in during the winter months just in case. Hadn't thought about the rock from a lawn mower though. Oh well, that'll just be an excuse to make more. LOL! As for it being windy...it gets pretty windy here as well, so you need to be sure your bottom piece is very heavy. Or silicone on a large, heavy piece like a microwave oven plate (2 bucks or so at thrift stores) and cover it with rock or mulch if you want to hide it.

Good grief people, let the people live their own lifestyle. At least their kids aren't joining gangs, stealing, etc. As for quality time with parents, I don't remember ever having one on one quality time with my parents and I feel I turned out reasonably well. My parents only had 6 but my aunt had 12. As for the donations, I'm sure the companies do it for their own reasons, publicity, free advertising, etc. I would accept any donations that anyone would want to give me too. What upsets me more is the illegals in this country having baby after baby and getting welfare and medical help. We used to have apartments in Ca. and most of the tenants were illegals and one woman asked me why I didn't have more children and I replied I didn't get paid to have babies, I had to work to support them. Her kids had better clothing, etc. than mine and she didn't use birth control, after all these kids were income. I know I'm in the minority, but that's the way I am and believe.

That's awesome! Until a few years ago, I did not even know the names of my maternal great grandparents. Now, after hours and hours of sleuthing, I can trace them back to the 1600's. I still have some more to do, but it has been an amazing journey. I hope you can find the siblings that you are searching for!

I asked my dad about his parents and grands... and on one of his trips to visit me in Oklahoma he brought his "Ahnenpass". All Germans needed to possess and carry such a document during Hitlers reign.

I copied all info down at the time. Wish I had made copies...

I find geneology fascinating. I don't know much about my family before 1900. A cousin did a lot of research, but she passed away about 10 years ago and no one saved her records.

Marie...Yes, I got the great info. I'm so sorry, I thought I responded on my iPod. I got wrapped up in possibly "finding" my other brothers I lost tract of my real life.

I'm going to try to come show, depending on the weather and road conditions. I'll be calling for reservations tonight.

Are you going to be at the quilt show? If so, I'd love to meet you and perhaps have coffee or lunch!

I am a genealogy nut! I love it and have been searching for my family now for about 20 years! It's a wonderful hobby and I was just at a huge genealogy conference yesterday in Center City Philadelphia. It was sponsored by Ancestry and The Historical Society of Pennsylvania. When I run into brick walls searching my own family I do searches for all my friends and in-laws etc. I just love it. I always loved mystery stories so maybe that explains it!

LOL, Joann (ghoghunter)!! I, too, love mysteries, and I, too, am a genealogy nut. I get so frustrated with Pennsylvania, though. My father's family came from Italy and ended up in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, which puts NOTHING online! Makes me crazy...
