Now I know what they mean about getting addicated....

I finally did my first few "Glass Garden Totems". I'd already been warned but, dang, these things are much more ADDICTIVE than I had thought. Here's some photos of my fist attempt.

Yeah, I second what he said - you can always remove a tree if it looks like the health of the others is at stake. And trees in the wild can grow surprisingly close together and still be ok (though it's not optimal.) I once saw an evergreen and a redbud that had grown so close together the redbud's trunk was entirely INSIDE the evergreen's limbs, and all you could see of the redbud was its outermost limbs stretching every which way out of the evergreen. Since it was in bloom at the time, it looked like the evergreen was exploding. Moral of the story is that they CAN survive like that, and sometimes it looks really amusing.

Hi Plllog! "That is, I know it's possible, but might not be in your budget." See, there's the crux of it. This little beverage center idea of mine was not in the original budget. (Nor, alas, were new drywall in the livingroom and halls, the gorgeous walnut top on my used cabinet island, the matching gorgeous top that will soon be on the new media cabinet and the near full gut of the bathroom.) And we're still determined to get through remodeling our ugly duckling without taking out a loan or dipping into savings. Conventional wisdom says: Wait until the coffers are full again but that's so hard to do. First off, I'm a cheapskate. Even if the goose who laid the golden egg waddled up onto my deck and built a nest, I'm not sure I would willingly pay someone to mess up the walls I just paid to fix. Second, I'm not quite cheap enough. My new kitchen is starting to look pretty good but, gosh, it would look so much better if the microwave and coffee maker didn't take up so much room on that one counter. I'm willing to spend a little bit more to change that, especially since I'm going to have a piece of countertop leftover that should be just the right size. Still, it's nice to know that it's possible. Maybe when the coffers ARE full again I'll put a tile counter outside on my deck to shade the golden goose should she happen to wander by ;) Thanks for your help!

What does Finish mean? How do I know if I still have it?

While some fabrics have applied "finishes", many of those are not really washable. A well-known example is chintz decorating fabric often made into curtains. It has a subtle sheen, but if you wash it the sheen disappears, leaving just the printed colors on the fabric. Some people like chintz even better after it's been washed, however. Some modern fabrics have resins embedded in the fabric to assist in preventing wrinkles. This is the basis of the wash and wear dress shirts, for example. Those resins do wear away over the course of a large number of washes, so perhaps that's what the salesman had in mind. Personally I find the added resins unpleasant so I try never to buy fabrics treated with them. Finally most white fabris and clothing sold in the US are treated with optical brightening agents (OBAs), which are essentially florescent dyes that make the white color appear to glow. This is to aid in maintaing the visual impression of whiteness. Many mainstream detergents also add a small amount of OBAs in an attempt to prolong the effect. If you wear clothes made of treated fabric next to your skin, you acquire a subtle florescence of your own. In addition, older or antique white textiles when washed with detergents that add OBAs can become splotchy looking. On the whole, I imagine the marketing babble about maintaining your clothing's finish most likely has to do with the resin-coated anti-wrinkling factor. Those do wear away over time, and you may not have clothing treated that way. For that reason you should decide if the "finish-protection" thing is really important to you. HTH, Molly~ PS BTW, a very familiar textile finish is plain old starch added to the rinse water. For that, of course, it's probably better that it washes away with each wash or you'd be walking around like the tin man sooner or later.

yoyo from memory . . . ancient lights meant a right of a householder to daylight so as to protect them from a neighbour (for eg) putting up a building/wall/structure next to their window(s) making it difficult for them to see out or for light to shine in. English people are rather fond of hedges, fences, walls surrounding their properties plus gates leading up garden paths to the front door with the added defence of a loud and savage dog. These days there are often on-going battles between people who love 15 foot trees that overshadow their neighbours property. The 'quick-growing' leyandii used to be very popular and at last I think the Courts have decided they can be classed as over-grown bushes so can by cut down. But on the whole we don't go in for building housed in the middle of woods/forests . . . partly because much it has been felled over the centuries . . . and what is left is heavily protected, I don't know of anyone over here who still reads Beverley Nichols; he used to be considered very effete although I'm probably not allowed to say so . . . and obviously it doesn't detract from the quality of his work.

GE II silicon. And it is SO much easier than it looks! Just pick some pieces/parts of glassware (I bought mine all from 2nd-hand shops), figure out your design and stick them all together using GE silican "glue". Make sure you use LOTS of silcicon.
I'm "addicted" now; this is SO easy. My neighbors were SO impressed when I said I made them myself.
p.s. just make sure you have most facing "down" (otherwise you have to worry about water accumulation")

I love them! Now I see another addiction coming on too...and I will have to stop at 'every' yard sale to find goodies...sigh.

If you guys like those....you need to start visiting over at Garden Junk....They have the neatest idea....

If you ask over there you'll see lots and lots of them ...all different.

I made them for my cousins for Christmas about three years ago. They loved them.

Just be careful. I had a Gazing Ball in my Flower Bed and it got broken when the lawn mower throw a stone into it.

Those are really pretty. I have some glassware I don't have room for, so will think about making some. I usually use E6000, so wonder if it would work for them?

Oh my gosh....I really didn't need to even see these!!! They are absolutely beautiful!!! I am sitting here looking at a box of glassware that I haven't been able to part with so now I have a plan. Plus, this gives me yet another excuse for dragging things in from garage sales. My DH is going to be thirilled with this news...LOL! I thought about the lawn mower issue and from what I read on the other forum, you place these on a piece of PVC. Couldn't you just lift them off before mowing?

I live in Iowa...we have hot summers and cold winters...I left mine outside during both extremes...it didn't breake...but you don't want to glue any of the dishes right side up to catch water...unless you are making a totem birdbath. Then I think you should bring it in.

I love them ,but it's always too windy at my house for them,and if i put them in the front yard,some jerk would probably steal them,like they did my chair lady.

Thanks pattico for the link. My neighbors were commenting on these the other day and couldn't believe they were something I made myself.
I do plan on bringing them in during the winter months just in case. Hadn't thought about the rock from a lawn mower though. Oh well, that'll just be an excuse to make more. LOL!
As for it being windy...it gets pretty windy here as well, so you need to be sure your bottom piece is very heavy. Or silicone on a large, heavy piece like a microwave oven plate (2 bucks or so at thrift stores) and cover it with rock or mulch if you want to hide it.

Your totems are beautiful, look so elegant.

This is the first (and so far only) totem that I made and has been outside for about 5 years in hot, cold, snow, ice and no problems. The top votive cup is removable and I bring it in in the winter. It has never fell over and we have had some extreme windy days. Hope to make better ones in the future have loads of glassware to use and can't pass up any I find at garage sales or thrift shops that is inexpensive.

Really cool! If you could figure out how to put aquarium hose through them they would make a great water feature.
