yet another stair remodel question

We recently had to rip the hideous carpet from our stairs which lead to the finished basement, had to replace some treads, assuming we were just going to recarpet, but in hindsite and looking at so many blogs with stair remodels, I started considering doing a paint/stain on the stairs...

HOWEVER....DH does not like the sound generated by climbing stairs (clomp clomp clomp) and I thought a runner would do the trick...

HOWEVER we have a pie shape at the 'landing' and quite frankly I've given up on trying a DIY solution to navigating the pie steps (unless anyone has any easy solution!)

MY QUESTION: would it look weird to do a runner on the straight run only of the steps and just stain and paint the 'landing' pie shaped steps?

(my apologies for the length of the topic!)

I'm not sure how large your pie shape is, and this isn't even pie shape, but thought it might help you visualize

Google: "carpet runner on pie shaped stairs" You will get a ton of how to info. Click on images and there are great photos.

I have a pie shaped stair on a staircase and the only thing I would be concerned with is... that maybe the treatments should be the same. Not sure it should go from carpet to wood, then back. Thinking of this from a safety stand point. Carpet has more grippy power where wood can be slippery. Your footing would change mid stair. I've fallen on these stairs (the pie step) so I know they can be tricky if you are not paying attention and moving quickly.

Just something to think about.

Thanks! The builder is wanting soooo many decisions today. Paint color, toilets, faucets. Ugh. You'd think I just woke up this week to find we're building a house. I've been in "paralysis by analysis" Good luck to you, too. I'll go check the Vespin II. Maybe I haven't looked at it before because of price maybe.

We replaced a toilet recently, and read through all of the posts here. In a couple of threads, we found a link to this report on the functioning of various toilets: http://www.cuwcc.org/maptesting.lasso. Based on what we read in that report, we bought the American Standard Cadet 3. It's great: it does what it needs to do, looks nice, and was readily available at HD. We might have considered a Toto, but the nearest showroom was a 50+ mile drive, and so we decided against it.

I'd like to see the adjoining areas too. I'm thinking like remodelfla -- you would be better off moving the W/D and creating a galley kitchen that might have some extra storage on the long hall wall. If moving the water supply and drains is a problem (realize Florida might have concrete slabs like we do), then I would put the sink on that W/D walland the range would still be on the peninsula side, but look at a glass hood. I've seen plenty that look good over a peninsula. I know Candice Olsen has done one or more. I think the bigger issue is how that space works for you, and with 2 windows and 3 doorways in a small space, you have a better foyer than kitchen right now. It will function better if you can isolate the cooking tasks from the laundry (do you really want dryer lint where you are cooking anyway?). That looks like a galley with a hallway laundry pair either under the window or stacked to one side of the window. Assuming you need the three passage ways, I would consider keeping one large window and possibly closing up one or changing it to transom or backsplash windows. That gets involved in exterior factors and may or may not work for design, budget or other reasons, but I'd at least ask yourself those kind of questions now. Make sure you have thought about where the light comes from and how it shines into the kitchen -- now and with harsher angles in the winter. You may have views and light you cannot part with, but you could also have some harsh glare and heat. Good luck with your project and move.

Am I nuts? Yet another marble question

I have a lot of white (calacatta) marble countertops, but only two little children (four and two), so they're not the ones messing up the counters (that'd be their daddy and me!). I just turned 39 (I mention this for perspective), and I remember being in junior high school (so I was like twelve or thirteen) and seeing a raspberry pink bijou (as in teeny-tiny) kitchen with white marble countertops. It became my dream. For 26 years, I dreamt of a kitchen with white marble countertops. Nothing, no slobby husband, no potentially messy kids, were going to stand in my way. (I gave up on the raspberry pink cabinets years ago, though. I realized that while I love raspberry in doses, it would just be too much in a kitchen of any size.) I think you'd be better of with just your baking stretch of marble (and not the whole island). Every other marble person here I "know" (you know what I mean) is like me: it was going to be marble or nothing. We couldn't envision our kitchens without the marble, and nothing and no one was going to prevent it. I would hate for you or anyone to have any material in their kitchen which leaves you holding you breath, as in holding your breath when your kids are in the kitchen to see if they're doing to ding / stain the countertop. I'd love for a material to take your breath away, but that's totally different! A kitchen is supposed to be a workplace; I know many have made them showplaces (and those are the ones we tend to see in magazines, right?), but it's like having a living room with those plastic runners on the floors and plastic covers on the furniture. Then it's not a room for living, is it? Going through a kitchen remodel is a wonderful thing, and you are so lucky to get to do it. I want you to enjoy your kitchen and I want you to be able to enjoy your kids enjoying the kitchen!

thank you both for your input...love the picture with the wood landing....but debrak makes an excellent point...when we changed out the stair treads, my contractor said the top step was a half inch lower that the rest, so he corrected that...

i was amazed at the number of times i caught my foot going up stairs (such is muscle memory)

he warned me to be extra careful and that i would probably find it awkward, and he was right!

i was leaning toward a very, very low pile or even sisal, so hopefully the transition would not feel too weird...i only have 13 steps there are 2 pie steps which turn onto the (very smallish) landing..

those pictures help a lot!

I don't find our wood treads noisy at all but we do not wear shoes in the house. They are not slippery either. I think ours are quieter because I installed the wood treads over top of existing plywood stairs, using good carpenter's glue and finishing nails. No squeaks and the noise is minimal in sock feet.

But if you want a runner, go for it - much better than full carpet. It shouldn't be too hard to install, but you still have to paint all the stairs, the edges will show and if you change the runner width in the future or decide to go without you don't want unpainted areas in the middle.
