Almost Finished Master Bedroom . . . (pics)

A few weeks back I posted about my bedroom. I just couldn't get it right. It was not the relaxing haven I had attempted to make.

So I decided I wanted something that would remind me of our visits to the Caribbean. Here's what I ended up with. My DH helped with the wainscotting and the crown moulding. I still need to hang drapes--they will be sheer white. I also have other art to hang but I haven't gotten it done yet. DH did make me some frames for some artwork that I already had that blended into the background (wall color). He made me white frames to add that "pop". I found a slipper chair made from the fabric on the pillows on the bed. Do you think that would be too "matchy-matchy" or would it be okay?

Any suggestions you have to finish off the room would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all of your great ideas! I would never have attempted something like this if I hadn't found and perused (repeatedly) GW.

BTW, the color is not correct on my monitor. It is a blue-green, depending on the light. It is Behr's Clear Pond and reminds me of the waters of the Caribbean.

I'd hang the drapes as high to the ceiling as possible, btw.

Pretty! Take a look at megsy's white cotton drapes in her BR. I know you say you want sheer - just throwing these in the mix. I think her BR post is on page 4 or you can search with her user name.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I'm glad if our project can help anyone else with theirs because I know that it can be nervewracking. Here are some answers to some more questions. @ suero - not sure why your suction cup won't stick. Is your tile smooth or porous? Make sure its not on a grout line and that its a little wet. @ desertsteph - the door makes a little noise but nothing too intrusive. I found a kit where the wheels are actually a type of nylon, which are supposed to be quieter than steel, but the track is steel so it does make a little noise. It rolls pretty smooth, but it can get a little stuck, but nothing too bad and not enough for us to regret it at all. @ sochi - the barn door is just a simple single panel, shaker-style wood door. Its the same as our closet doors, but bigger. We had our contractor cut some mdf strips to make the design, then it was caulked and painted. The track hardware is from rusticahardware.com. We thank it came out great. However, I can't take 100% credit for it. I had the design in my head but I was trolling around the internet looking at others who created barn doors and I came across Catskill Farms Real Estate (linked below). They use a lot of barn doors in their homes and it was like they had created exactly what I had in my head. Up to this point I kept going back and forth on doing a barn door or not, but once I saw their homes I was determined to use this element in our project. I highly recommend checking out their site and take a look at the homes they create for inspiration. Funny, funkyart, my house is a 1960's colonial...but I always wanted that old farmhouse. So we ripped out all (ALL) the wimpy moulding and baseboards throughout the house and replaced it with wide/substantial trim, Added hardwood throughout, and did everything we could to revamp the style. It's more of a colonial revival look throughout---with schoolhouse pendants, pedestal sink in the 1/2 bath etc. I bet you could make this work in your room too! I will post some pictures of the inside of the closet tonight so you can get a better idea of how big, and the layout etc. Pretty much, it is a wide reach-in. Not quite walk in closet, although it is big enough to walk into etc. just not to hang clothing on both sides. The entire closet is open, but closed off by the 3 sets of doors. 2 sets of the doors hold my clothes, and dh has one. Shoe cubbies fit on both ends (which may be may favorite part of the whole thing---Dh built them to fit shoes and purses.) The closet system is from Lowes, and I highly recommend it. You can customize it however you like and it really looks more $ than it is. We had priced out California Closets, and their bottom of the line style was almost triple the cost of these... and these are much nicer looking. If you can DIY, they are the way to go. Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?

Can someone please tell me how it got to be July 7th? I never thought a month could go by so fast! Anyway.. I was able to find an adorable upholstered headboard at Target! Color choices were limited, but they had one called Khaki, which sounded promising given my khaki skirt and walls. Unfortunately, their Khaki was much pinker than mine.. so I changed out the bedskirt to another target Taupe.. I think it looks decent, what do you all think? And, while I was at Target, I foung this cute black and white/cream quilt.. thought I would see how that looked.. and I like that as well! Before I go with it, and buy more black accents (such as table topper, curtains, etc.. I thought I would ask you all your opinions please? (I moved the black chest over as Les suggested, but I can't move the bed any further to the left due to the light switch placement.) Thanks for your suggestions!!

It looks wonderful...the color is great. If you want to add a little more of a tropical feel I suggest a palm plant and maybe a tropical print area rug at the foot of your bed. Maybe add a tropical flower air freshener to add to the ambiance.

Thanks, all! I do love the Ikea drapes. I was going to reuse some sheers I used in the old house but at Ikea's prices, buying new ones is doable! Thanks a million for the tip!

I think a cane or wicker chair would add a touch of the tropics nicely, rather than an upolstered chair.

The room doesn't say "Caribbean" to me, but it does say "Wow"!

You did a great transformation with the crown molding, wainscoting, and new color. I think a matching slipper chair would look good since it would only be matching a tiny pillow and not the whole bedspread.

I would reconsider doing picture frames in white. That would give the feel of being too matchy-matchy and take the focus away from your beautiful new trim. I would go with darker wood frames.

I don't know what you are doing about window treatments yet but I think a couple touches of cream or ivory in the room would soften the contrast between the blue and white. Maybe sneak one of the cream pillows back onto the bed? Use a cream pillow on the slipper chair? Do the picture frames in cream instead of white if you don't like wood frames?
