Repeatedly replaced pressure reducing valve

In the past 4 years we've had to replace our pressure reducing valve 3 times. It always seems to go out when we have a cold snap. We live in CO and this most recent cold snap is 5 below 0. What is the connection between cold temperatures and the function of the pressure reducing valve? Is there anything else we can do to prevent the need to replace the valve?

If this for your heating system feed (radiator heat?), I believe the feed is supposed to be closed once you reach your desired pressure/altitude (since it's a closed system). Is it being left open for some reason?

You should be able to close the shut off that is located upstream of the pressure reducing vavle. If you have no leaks in your closed hot water system you should maintain good pressure. I set at 16-17 psi. I use the Caleffi (brand) pressure relief valve because it has a adjustable dial to preset the presure you want.
I have never heard of cold tempatures or high presures effecting the these valves, nor do the specs say anything.
When this valve is failing are you loosing presure? Are you gaining pressure?

Easiest is to install a pressure regulator close to the hose bib. This is common in RVs, which have to deal with different system water pressures wherever they go. You can either plumb it in permanently, or use NPT to hose adapters. Here's what you'll need: Watts N45BU Â¾" water pressure reducing valve. But it’s pressure balancing rather than thermostatic. You won't get as much pressure from it as a thermostatic from the beginning. Your real issue is pressure, not volume. Think of a 5 gallon bucket of gatorade dumped over your head. No pressure. All volume. Now think of a pressure washer that uses 1 gallon of water at 1200 psi pressure to clean the mold off of the sidewalk. You need an air entrained pressure head if you want more force. and your building’s pressure tank isn't supplying it. 2.5 gallons is more than enough volume to give a good shower.

No you don't have to shut off the supply water before the pressure reducer. If that were the case why have a pressure reducer at all? You could just fill the system according to the reading on the pressure/temperature guage. Westminsterbergs, are you sure the PRV is the problem? Whats happening, is the pressure in the system building up to the point that the relief valve is blowing? Has anyone checked the condition of your expansion tank? Do you get your domestic hot water off the same boiler? If so you might just have a pinhole leak in the tankless coil thats slowly introducing street pressure into your heating system. In the average house the heating system pressure should be no more then 12 PSI. You have to supply more information before anyone can give you an educated answer about your problem.
