Comments (21)dudleyfuddpucker, Im not here to argue any facts with you but I must respond to your comments. I'm not sure you read my ENTIRE post ... what I wrote was: There is a great website, Healthy Child Healthy World, which contains some great information. I pulled this from their site re: fabric softeners: According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and industry-generated Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) from the 1990s Is it only clear to me that Im referencing the HCHW site?? (I said I pulled this from THEIR site) The fact that you would compare Healthy Child Healthy World or the Environmental Working Group to a "Craigslist posting" shows you have no knowledge whatsoever of them or their work. They are legitimate organizations staffed with scientists, doctors, engineers, CEOs, etc and they do reference specific studies (but youd actually have to go to the site and read it). I pulled this from the EWG site: EWG's ground-breaking January 2010 report, Off the Books, documented that a loophole in the toxics control law has permitted industry to keep secret more than 17,000 chemicals. The report prompted a front-page story in the Washington Post and spurred the Environmental Protection Agency to begin denying some confidentiality claims. Regulators in 13 states asked Congress to crack down on excessive secrecy. EWG senior scientist David Andrews briefed Congressional and EPA officials. And for the record, no where did I write that YOU stuck your head in the sand. I think I was also pretty clear that it is up to individuals to make up their own minds (I assume the readers of this forum are intelligent enough to read and make their own decisions). This is why I posted links to the sites for them to read if they choose. I believe I said do your "do diligence" and read. Too many people sit back and say, "they sell it so it must be safe" or "the MSDS says its safe". I think history has shown that "they" dont always know if something is safe. Take flame retardants as just ONE example. Different chemicals were approved for use and then years later were deemed unsafe and taken off the market (after they doused children's sleepwear and clothes with them). The US is now taking action to remove Deca-BDE from the market as it can potentially cause cancer and may impact brain function (please see my link if youre interested in reading FACT not fiction). You are fooled if you think every one of the chemicals in use today has been tested for safety. Even if it has been tested, they do not test the safety of the chemicals in combination with each other. Nuf said, make up your own mind....See MoreIron in water after softener regerates

Nonetheless, after the brining, hard water containing iron re-enters the resin bed to "wash" out the salty brine water. Chances can be that the iron used in this portion of the regeneration process can be re-introduced to the house causing him the problems he is stating. I disagree in that it makes no difference if the regeneration water is either hard for soft. There are advantages to using soft water. It avoids the very problems that darknova is stating. Older systems that use hard water for brine drums can cause many problems as I have seen dirty water cause problems with brine drums. So much so that a few inches of dirt have accumulated in the bottom of the drum. I see no sense in washing the resins in this dirty, iron-ladened water. We have had so many service calls with this very problem. Counter-current regeneration has shown to be more efficient using less salt, water and hard water leakage is greatly reduced. In other words, brining in the opposite direction of service. The reason for twin tank softener because water is needed 24/7 is never a reason given for their application and therefor as an argument against it has little value. Twin tank softeners have better service, longer resin life and customers that I have after replacing single tank softeners nearly always commented on the great difference in service and water quality. How much iron does darknova have. "Low iron" is not a clear definition and anyone who judges the type of softener because someone has 'low iron' is doing no one any service. Would you consider 5ppm iron low? Well, in some location where iron can be 25ppm, 5 might seem low. Or the owner has been told "low" but in fact after testing it is considered high. Anything over 0.2 ppm is considered a nuisance iron. So, if he has 2.0 ppm it may not seem high to the person telling him but in fact can cause problems. Get accurate test results, that is essential. http://www.awqinc.com/buying_a_water_softener1.html http://www.realestatecolorado.com/realestatelibrary/water_water_softners.html http://www.bobvila.com/HowTo_Library/Don_t_Be_Afraid_of_the_Water-Miscellaneous_Plumbing-A1610-5.html Yes twin tank systems are more expensive but cost effective over the longer and generally use less salt and water. Learn to say No now and then, and mean it. You might be a super woman, but Superwoman you aren't. So stop trying. Can you get occasional respite care for your mother? Try having a chat with the doctor, and the social worker at the hospital, or a local church or charity organisation. One day a week to yourself will be very rejuvenating for you. Pass the buck onto SIL if necessary. I have a friend who takes things on like you seem to, and people walk all over her with hobnailed boots. Now and then she remembers some good advice I gave her some time back - use the 'what if I were dead? ' tactic. In other words, if you got run over by a bus tomorrow, the world would still revolve, someone would step in to take over from you. They'd cope. So - sometimes, let 'em cope! Meantime, you need some free time, some space, and some freedom to live and breathe for yourself. You've earned that right....See MoreSelecting a water softener (and this time, I'm gonna do it)
Comments (22)I'm not going to beat this horse much longer... but here's my take on this and it applies to a larger conversation: If an end user wants the benefit of expert knowledge and good service, then by all means I think they should enlist the help of a local water treatment service and expect to pay for that expertise and service. If an end user has reasonably simple needs and is willing to do some research and learn, get his/her hands dirty, and have something that does a "pretty good job" for significantly less money - then an online purchase of a water softener can be an option. I feel like these softeners on Amazon provide a good value, using a good valve and otherwise commodity parts. They offer a higher-quality and better-service alternative to going to a big box store and getting something. However, they shouldn't be measured using the same yardstick as a local treatment expert. What makes me angry are the outfits that charge like they are attorneys, will lecture you about being professionals when they are questioned about the rate, and still not deliver the expertise or service. Case in point is the user on here who was charged $700 to hook up a water softener and they didn't include an air gap in the drain. Also, the man who had lost all of his resin in his kinetico water softener twice after paying big to have it fixed once. RayMO, The feedback from the purchasers of the unit that you purchased has been uniformly very positive - the only negatives were from people who had really unrealistic expectations of the install process. I think that you will be happy with your purchase. I have been really pleased with mine....See MoreUser
