I made a list of "emergency" numbers and put on the refrigerator for lights out, gas outage or something. The electronic items might not have power to consult so you need to have something on paper to know the number to call when power goes out. And, as said before, a non-battery phone to use to call.

But when the power was out, I charged my notebook in the vehicle and had dialup internet so I had internet to entertain me along with my battery TV. I was happy.

I have to say, when the power went out a couple months ago, I was happy I had been zone heating and had the living area warmer than in years past. It was cold out but the power was only out for about 3-4 hours. I had clothes handy, and looked out the window on the clear cold night. It was so peaceful and quiet. Used my corded phone to report it and they said it'd be back on about 6am and was on about 4.

Off of the top of my head, the best tip I remember from all of our hurricanes is that anything that can be cooked on a stovetop can be cooked on a grill. We keep our propane tanks full every year at hurricane season for that reason.

Will post more when they come to me (I've got a case of sometimer's tonight - sometimes I remember things but tonight I don't).

Overwintering rosemary hints...?
Q
Comments (31)
I have kept potted rosemary indoors over the winter for many many years. I learned from trial and error, involving many many failures. Here is what I found. Rosemary is very intolerant of drying out. If it dries out -- that's it. It won't recover. On the other hand it likes perfect drainage. So check the soil frequently with your fingers to see if it is damp. The thing about rosemary is that it is fast growing and wants to be five foot tall and wide. So when it is happy, its roots fill up the pot fairly quickly. Once they fill up the pot, it dries out in a trice. So you need to prune the roots once in a while or give it a bigger pot with more room. Prune the roots and the leaves (for cooking) to slow it down. Otherwise, a happy plant will suddenly be dead in the morning with no warning. I also find this to be true with myrtle in pots (love this plant). Indoors, rosemary should get all the light you can give it, and circulation of air, if possible. The cooler the room you keep it in, the better. A chilly vestibule is ideal. A fan and humidifier in the room are not a bad idea. Rosemary thrives in a breezy seaside environment in its native Mediterranean. Outdoors, I once kept a rosemary in a big container in very light potting soil alive for several years at my cousin's cottage on Long Island. It was planted in a huge flower box with other winter savory and thyme. The container was right against the house in semi-shade near a window so got some warmth and shelter. The plant didn't look very good when Spring came around though and I doubt it was worth it. Rosemary is extremely easy to propagate so don't feel too bad if you kill it a few times before finding what works for you and it. It's great with bland meats like pork and chicken. The idea of growing it in the same pot as a geranium is intriguing to get rid of excess moisture is intriguing. I am thinking also of trying something like that with amaryllis, which also hates excess moisture.

Hi All, Not much going one here, just work, cleaning, etc. boring stuff. It will be exciting this week though. I'm going to a beer tasting/education on Tues. I have a web site meeting on Thurs. On Friday I'm going to Gardenscape which is the Rochester garden show I attend every year. It is a really nice one! I will also be working it too for the Rock Garden Society. Dottie, Congrats on the grandson! Lol, about getting over excited about the sprouts. Lettuce, broccoli family plants, and violas are very tough and can handle light freezes when they are babies. So you can take the lids off, but if it is going to dip really low like you said, you will need to re-cap them. Marie, I'm glad to hear of the good news!! Do we all have the wrong address now? lol. Your bloom is gorgeous! 4 years, you are a patient woman. Jeanne, Are those pics of flowers blooming now with your garden critters? If so I'm very jealous! Here's my stab at Carol's questions. 1. I wash all of the laundry anytime I see bad weather coming. Dirty clothes and no power is awful. I also bake up some bread in my breadmaker because it's a nice comfort food.

I can't park in my garage. If there is an ice or snow storm coming, I park with my wiper blades up and out so they don't get stuck to my windshield. That way they don't ruined when I'm scraping ice off.

I also bring in a couple of days worth of wood if it's going to be nasty outside. I use my laundry baskets to hold it so it doesn't mess up the floors.

Our home phone forwards to my cell phone when the power is out. We don't miss important calls that way. I don't have to give my cell phone number to people I don't want to have it.

Great hints Never thought of that windshield wiper hint
It's a great idea to have those utility numbers written down.
I also was buying one of the little AA flashlights at Walmart when ever I'd check out They were 88¢ and came with 2 batteries I have them all over the house. I see they went up to $1 now but still a good bargain.
