in my yahoo mail is a place on the left, with a chat option. I do chat with one person often, but only one from my whole address book. When I see them online it looks like this:

I am Available

1 Online Contact [Add]

1. name of the person goes here

That chat thing has been popping up on mine recently. I have the chat option set to invisable! I googled it when it first started happening...and everything I read pretty much said there's nothing you can do about it, except "Hit Ignore and Deny all Request From That User"!!

yahoo has made some major changes and if you have not gone in to your account and privacy settings lately you really need to because they by default have it set to share a LOT of stuff, some with your contacts in your address book some with everyone. I was very surprised at all of the new changes and I set every one of them to NO ONE. It was even hooking up some of my contacts with out me even doing anything or knowing. Both of them have facebook accounts, I do not, and it told me that person A and person B from my contacts were now connected to each other. These 2 people are both in my contacts but have never met or know anything about the other. That is just ridiculous.
I do not use my yahoo account just keep it for a back up.

Upper right, click on Options, and Mail Options

On the left, click on Account Information. A new box opens, prompting you for your password.

Click Edit Profile Information, and you can set whatever you want to be visible to everyone, contacts, or No one.

I didn't see anything about Chat, though.

Thank you Raven!! I just went to change mine--I truly hate Yahoo mail. We use Entourage now but like you, keep yahoo for back-up; it's what we were given with at&t u-verse. What really pushed me over the edge was the fact that the email list kept bouncing around and it was very hard to use the mouse with it. It wasn't a computer problem since in the middle of using yahoo we got a new computer and the same thing happened.

Can I ask you a question? On my yahoo account is a list of people, some whom I know and some not, and comments they have made. How do I delete all those? I've learned to ignore them but I'd love to get rid of them. I'm afraid to play around with it as I think I might inadvertently sign up for something!

Yahoo is my main email account, and I have it set up like I want it.
Go to Contacts, and click on Tools.
Click "Seeing Updates from". Make sure the Box that says "See updates in yahoo mail" is unchecked.

If your contacts are listed you can choose to Hide Updates or Stop Getting Updates, with each one.

Look around a bit under the Updates. You can set it so that your updates don't get sent as well. (Manage my updates).

Thank you, Raven, you have been a big help. Who knew there was so much info/choice under "contacts??" This is not intuitive for me and as I said before, I'm afraid to play with stuff having to do with email. I'm grateful for your good advice, once again.

Thanks everyone. I followed the steps to-day, that were suggested and I think I have done all that I was supposed to. Certainly eveything was checked that shouldn't have been. I'm so thankful for this forum and all the help it gives.
