Switching to Firefox: Question about Email

I plan on changing browsers from IE8 to the newest Firefox.

I currently have Windows Mail that I use on my Vista Home Edition computer: will changing browsers effect my email at all?

I guess I am remembering many years ago, switching to Netscape and my email changed, so I am wondering about changing to Firefox.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

no it will not you just access what ever websites you need to. Has no effect on your actual email.
Just ask if you have any firefox questions.
There are some add ons you will probably want to add to it pretty quickly especially ad block plus and the easy list subscription for it to help control all of these ads.

Hi DA, When I go to Tools>Add-ons I do not see Tools for Add-ons. So I went to the Adblock plus sign and there is nothing there that tells me anything about Manual or Automatic Updates. Another thing I just noticed is that I don't have the current update, do I have to go to the site and download it? Which site is the best? Oh yes I have the 0.9 version. I didn't know that because I didn't install Firefox the guys did when I had this computer built. Please send me the safest link to download the current version of Adblock Plus. Thank you.

Thanks Raven. Setting up the email helped - so easy and works great. I'm having more trouble with the tabs. I went to tools, options and tabs - but no matter what I choose, I can't get the tabs to stay there. I think I'm not quite clear on using them. I noticed that if I have a webpage open, and I click a link within that webpage, then it opens up the newly linked webpage - and retains the original webpage in a tab. At least I think that's what's happening - am I right? But what I was also hoping to do is if I'm on one webpage - say computer forum - and I don't want to close it - but then I want to go to my AOL mailbox - if I click on my AOl mailbox (or any other bookmarked page) - that new page opens - but I get disconnected from the other page I had opened. Is there a way to keep the former page open as well - until I close it - and have it display as a tab? I'm talking about opening up separate websites - not going from within one page and clicking a link to another. When I was using my AOL browser (which I gather is similar to IE), if I had a page opened - and then opened another - they would both be open. I'm assuming that isn't how firefox is set up by default. In which case, is there a way I can set it up like that? I did do the color tabs (I think I was looking on a link you provided in another thread for some cool add-ons and things for firefox). It's the only plugin or add-on that I got from the beginning bc. Yeah, sorry, I'm not expert enough to explain the difference, just pointing out that there is a difference. My banking sites work fine without Java. I wasn't implying your problem is Javascript, just that it's not Java. Javascript is not something you manually update, it's built into the browser and updates when you update the browser. Personally, I wouldn't rush to reinstall Windows if all the problems are in Firefox. First, I'd try the "reset" that you tried. If that didn't work, I'd uninstall Firefox and reinstall it. If that didn't work, I'd do it again but make sure it didn't leave anything behind. Make sure it removed my old Firefox profile, maybe even run CCleaner's registry cleaner to make sure all Firefox registry entries were removed. Then if after all that it still didn't work right... I'd consider reinstalling Windows. I'm not an expert though so I'm saying that's what you should do, just telling you what I'd do. BTW, every time I've ever reinstalled Windows, I dreaded it but ended up glad I did. Machine ran snappy new again. Sorry I can't help more.

Terry - that was great - thanks. It completely did what I wanted to achieve. I can easily see if I've gotten new email on my other account without switching software, etc Now a new problem occurred yesterday - before I made those changes - and I have no idea what I may have done to cause it. probably something I did in experimenting with all these different email issues. I had my firefox set up to send links in emails (from my AOL address). But now I'm trying to send my mother a link (for the emergency microsoft update from 2 days ago) - and when I'm in Firefox (and the computer forum thread is open - or any web page is open) - and I go to File - then click send link - it brings up an email form (with my screen name in AOL as the sender - so that party's working) - but a whole mishigosh of info (the link info, perhaps) appears in the space where I should be entering the email address I'm sending it to. I have no idea why that is happening. If I cut and paste that info into the body of the email - and send it to myself to test it - it doesn't appear to be a link to get me to the webpage I want). Seems to me that the webpage link should be referred to in the subject line - and supplied in the body of the email - not some mess of information occuring in the send to line. I tried going to FF tools - applications- and mail to . I have several options to choose from - use AOL software (this appears twice - once with the AOL triangle with "default" in parentheses and once with what looks like a mail page form), and once it says use AOL mail. I think I've tried all three and it still doesn't work. And before I started trying to change my email settings this week, I think there was only 1 or 2 AOL options for mail application in Firefox. Okay - so now I checked all three. On use AOL mail, it gives me the gibberish (somehow related to the webpage I'm trying to send a link for) in the to: line. If I choose use AOL software (default) - with the mail form logo - it goes to AOL software - sets up the email correctly with the information about the link in the subject line - and the to: field blank for me to fill in the recipient. But it wants me to sign on or the send button is faded and I can't click it. If I choose use AOL software (with the AOL logo - not the email logo), it takes me to the AOL software page and says this file may not be supported by AOL. AOL will try to send it as a text file (and if I choose to try, it will tell me the file is too big). So I do I email somebody links? Thanks. Lynn.

I ad both the easylist and easyprivacy from that site, just scroll down to the 2 items in the yellow bars and go to the far right click on Add to ABP for both of those and it will add them right to your ad block plus and you should be good to go.
Install ad block plus from here first
Adblock Plus 1.1.3
then go grab those 2 subscriptions.

Raven and Zep, you aroused my curiosity about these add-ons. I had some trouble finding EasyPrivacy and located BetterPrivacy first. Is there a difference?

When I tried to install ad block plus, Firefox couldn't install it. A window opened asking me to disable Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 0.0.0 It further states: Adds ClickOnce support and the ability to report installed .NET Framework version to the web server.

Is this something that should be disabled?

Your problem W/Adblock+ is reported by a few users when installing add block, please see link. That's as far as I got on the search effort. They talk about disabling ,Net Framework add/ on.

Other then that not sure what to tell you on this.

that is NOT the same as easylist and easyprivacy. they are both right there at the link provided in zep's post. Here it is just scroll to the 2 yellow lines and on the far right click on the add to ABP to add it to your ad block plus
EasyList Subscriptions

to get the latest dev build of adblock plus which seems not to have those issues go to this link and select the one titled 00latest.xpi which should be the 3rd line

after installing it in your firefox you need to restart firefox to activate it then get the subscriptions.

you should be able to install that one then once you have that adblock plus installed go to that link I gave you for the easylist and easyprivacy and add those to it.

Thanks, Raven. The latest dev build of adblock worked.

Yesterday I got hung up on the adblock problem and forgot to click on Zep's link. (I didn't realize easyprivacy was listed there.) Instead I searched FF for it and received an answer that the file could not be found. I searched further and found betterprivacy. Then I finally checked zep's link and saw easyprivacy!!! :)

Thanks to both of you and all who share your knowledge on this forum. What a blessing!

OK, you have all convinced me to download FF...I am no computer wizard so hope by reading all that you all have written on the subject, all will go smoothly... Wish me luck, I have a feeling I am gong to need it.
What else is there to do at 2:30 AM when you can't sleep. :-)

Wow this works on these forums 300% better & faster then they did with IE. Why oh why did I wait so long. I added everything you all have listed so far in this thread anything else I should add?
Also, I use AVG as my antivirus program on my computer, will it work with FF just like it did with IE?

Yes any anti virus or anti malware will work with any browser you elect to try.

Watch for "remember password" at the top when you enter a password the first time. I love that it remembers for me.
