Switching to Firefox: Question about Email

I plan on changing browsers from IE8 to the newest Firefox.

I currently have Windows Mail that I use on my Vista Home Edition computer: will changing browsers effect my email at all?

I guess I am remembering many years ago, switching to Netscape and my email changed, so I am wondering about changing to Firefox.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

no it will not you just access what ever websites you need to. Has no effect on your actual email.
Just ask if you have any firefox questions.
There are some add ons you will probably want to add to it pretty quickly especially ad block plus and the easy list subscription for it to help control all of these ads.

mago this is what it says about dom inspector on the firefox site: DOM Inspector is a tool that can be used to inspect and edit the live DOM of any web document or XUL application. The DOM hierarchy can be navigated using a two-paned window that allows for a variety of different views on the document and all nodes within. Note: This add-on depends on binary changes to Firefox, and will not work with Firefox 2. I do not have it, never used it, so can not comment on it, if you do not use it then you can easily remove it. In fact I see you have ff 2 and it says that dom inspector does not work with ff 2??? There is a post some pages back that I had started called tips and tricks that thread has a lot of good info on ff ad ons and other useful stuff.

Yeah, sorry, I'm not expert enough to explain the difference, just pointing out that there is a difference. My banking sites work fine without Java. I wasn't implying your problem is Javascript, just that it's not Java. Javascript is not something you manually update, it's built into the browser and updates when you update the browser. Personally, I wouldn't rush to reinstall Windows if all the problems are in Firefox. First, I'd try the "reset" that you tried. If that didn't work, I'd uninstall Firefox and reinstall it. If that didn't work, I'd do it again but make sure it didn't leave anything behind. Make sure it removed my old Firefox profile, maybe even run CCleaner's registry cleaner to make sure all Firefox registry entries were removed. Then if after all that it still didn't work right... I'd consider reinstalling Windows. I'm not an expert though so I'm saying that's what you should do, just telling you what I'd do. BTW, every time I've ever reinstalled Windows, I dreaded it but ended up glad I did. Machine ran snappy new again. Sorry I can't help more.

Terry - that was great - thanks. It completely did what I wanted to achieve. I can easily see if I've gotten new email on my other account without switching software, etc Now a new problem occurred yesterday - before I made those changes - and I have no idea what I may have done to cause it. probably something I did in experimenting with all these different email issues. I had my firefox set up to send links in emails (from my AOL address). But now I'm trying to send my mother a link (for the emergency microsoft update from 2 days ago) - and when I'm in Firefox (and the computer forum thread is open - or any web page is open) - and I go to File - then click send link - it brings up an email form (with my screen name in AOL as the sender - so that party's working) - but a whole mishigosh of info (the link info, perhaps) appears in the space where I should be entering the email address I'm sending it to. I have no idea why that is happening. If I cut and paste that info into the body of the email - and send it to myself to test it - it doesn't appear to be a link to get me to the webpage I want). Seems to me that the webpage link should be referred to in the subject line - and supplied in the body of the email - not some mess of information occuring in the send to line. I tried going to FF tools - applications- and mail to . I have several options to choose from - use AOL software (this appears twice - once with the AOL triangle with "default" in parentheses and once with what looks like a mail page form), and once it says use AOL mail. I think I've tried all three and it still doesn't work. And before I started trying to change my email settings this week, I think there was only 1 or 2 AOL options for mail application in Firefox. Okay - so now I checked all three. On use AOL mail, it gives me the gibberish (somehow related to the webpage I'm trying to send a link for) in the to: line. If I choose use AOL software (default) - with the mail form logo - it goes to AOL software - sets up the email correctly with the information about the link in the subject line - and the to: field blank for me to fill in the recipient. But it wants me to sign on or the send button is faded and I can't click it. If I choose use AOL software (with the AOL logo - not the email logo), it takes me to the AOL software page and says this file may not be supported by AOL. AOL will try to send it as a text file (and if I choose to try, it will tell me the file is too big). So I do I email somebody links? Thanks. Lynn.

Making up a phone number when creating your email account is not a good idea since they use that number to contact you should there be an attack on your account or if you lost your info and they needed to resend it to you, they would be sending it to a phone number you can not reach to get that info and it could be someones actual phone number and they would be the one that got your critical information. You can instead give an alternate email address that is real where they can send you that information. I had that very thing happen recently with my gmail account, I accessed my account from an unknown, to them, device from a different state and it sent out an alert wanting to know if it was really me or if someone was trying to access my account. It was sent to my other email address that I provided, I was able to simply let them know it was me and it was a device I would be using. Had I provided my phone number they would have put out an automated call or text stating the same thing. There is an option to just skip that page and go on. Not everyone has a cell phone. Not everyone has texting. I believe that you can put in the phone number and request a call not text, then when you go into your account settings you can go in and remove the phone number, if it was set for text that option is not available or that is how it has been in the past for gmail. I set up a new yahoo account not long ago for one of my neighbors and was able to do so with out a cellphone because she does not have a cell phone. Yahoo has however been making so many changes and many are not for the better so it could have changed. So many people have left yahoo due to some of these changes.

I ad both the easylist and easyprivacy from that site, just scroll down to the 2 items in the yellow bars and go to the far right click on Add to ABP for both of those and it will add them right to your ad block plus and you should be good to go.
Install ad block plus from here first
Adblock Plus 1.1.3
then go grab those 2 subscriptions.

Raven and Zep, you aroused my curiosity about these add-ons. I had some trouble finding EasyPrivacy and located BetterPrivacy first. Is there a difference?

When I tried to install ad block plus, Firefox couldn't install it. A window opened asking me to disable Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 0.0.0 It further states: Adds ClickOnce support and the ability to report installed .NET Framework version to the web server.

Is this something that should be disabled?

Your problem W/Adblock+ is reported by a few users when installing add block, please see link. That's as far as I got on the search effort. They talk about disabling ,Net Framework add/ on.

Other then that not sure what to tell you on this.

that is NOT the same as easylist and easyprivacy. they are both right there at the link provided in zep's post. Here it is just scroll to the 2 yellow lines and on the far right click on the add to ABP to add it to your ad block plus
EasyList Subscriptions

to get the latest dev build of adblock plus which seems not to have those issues go to this link and select the one titled 00latest.xpi which should be the 3rd line

after installing it in your firefox you need to restart firefox to activate it then get the subscriptions.

you should be able to install that one then once you have that adblock plus installed go to that link I gave you for the easylist and easyprivacy and add those to it.

Thanks, Raven. The latest dev build of adblock worked.

Yesterday I got hung up on the adblock problem and forgot to click on Zep's link. (I didn't realize easyprivacy was listed there.) Instead I searched FF for it and received an answer that the file could not be found. I searched further and found betterprivacy. Then I finally checked zep's link and saw easyprivacy!!! :)

Thanks to both of you and all who share your knowledge on this forum. What a blessing!

OK, you have all convinced me to download FF...I am no computer wizard so hope by reading all that you all have written on the subject, all will go smoothly... Wish me luck, I have a feeling I am gong to need it.
What else is there to do at 2:30 AM when you can't sleep. :-)

Wow this works on these forums 300% better & faster then they did with IE. Why oh why did I wait so long. I added everything you all have listed so far in this thread anything else I should add?
Also, I use AVG as my antivirus program on my computer, will it work with FF just like it did with IE?

Yes any anti virus or anti malware will work with any browser you elect to try.

Watch for "remember password" at the top when you enter a password the first time. I love that it remembers for me.
