window help, please- urgent!

Maybe you all can help me with something. All along I've wanted to go with this kind of color scheme. The top part of the front of our house will be khaki stucco with arch-top black shutters, and ivory trim-- or this is the look I want. The bottom half of our front exterior will be a red/grayish-khaki/cream brick combo (Old St. Louis)This is the deal. We have to pick our windows TODAY-- we've already decided to go with the Better Bilt (in our budget and recommended by our contractor), but there are three colors (only three). Driftwood (which is a dark khaki/gray), almond (which is between ivory and beige), and white (pretty stark). I really want to go with a creamy white or ivory trim to warm up the look (don't want stark white). Should I go with the white windows and just compromise and make the trim a creamy white, only a subtle difference from the white windows or should I go with the almond-color and just go with a darker khaki stucco to offset the trim? Does that make sense? Please help!!!!!!!

Any pictures? Is there a 2nd or 3rd manufacturer of windows you could use that has more color choices?

We have the all Ultrex windows with the ebony exterior. Only two windows are installed so far and my only complaint is the look of the interior. The stone white, the only interior colour option, looks plasticky. The exteriors in ebony have an aluminum look, which we like. We went with no grids because we wanted the option to paint the interior frame black and we didn't want to be stuck with a white muntin, which IIRC was the only option with the all Ultrex. Plus, the all Ultrex muntins are pretty cheap looking even if we wanted white. The wood Ultrex has a much nicer looking interior and looks like it comes with a wood muntin/grille option. If you want grilles, this seems like the way to go. We ultimately chose the all Ultrex because it was the only one of the two available in ebony (as opposed to bronze, which is close to black, but not what we wanted).

Thank you, mclarke! That's what I'm looking for - people who have used these colors and like them, or suggestions for other colors in the same families. I'm glad to hear that you like Trusty Tan and don't feel it had any undertones. The natural pine trim is tricky and makes paints look either too yellow or too pink. Any yellow-y paint is a definite no-go. Trusty Tan should work, I think. Does anyone have ideas about my master bedroom? Will tan walls with a chocolate brown accent wall be too dark and drab? We do have a large south-facing window, so it will be pretty light. But this bedroom is giving me so many sleepless nights! I think I've changed my mind about color about a million times! :)

I've seen all of those options done, it is really personal preference. Personally, I think that the sdl grids mentioned above would give you the "richest" look regardless of color. I'm not crazy about the stained wood with white GBG look, but then again, I'm not a huge fan of the white window with stained trim look either. Its pretty common, but it makes it look like you have vinyl replacement windows. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but you are paying a premium for those Marvins so you may as well take advantage of that.

John, I chuckled when I saw your drawing. Except I had upper cabinets along the stove run instead of windows, you drew what our OLD kitchen was like almost exactly! I won't bore the OP with the problems of that layout other than to say with two people in there trying to cook and clean and do anything resembling a large meal was chaotic!!! NewYorking... First thing I thought of when I saw your original drawing was to use those narrow areas for cutting boards and cookie sheets! Glad to see that you thought of that as well. I understand your reluctance to continue working with your less than competent architect or wanting to refile paperwork. I want to encourage you to step back and look at the end result of years of cooking and cleaning in a kitchen that is less than ideal versus spending the time now to get things right. We do get tired of the design stage hassles. But if you are wanting to make your lives easier in the long run and keep resale value up, take the time now to make things be as easy to use as can possibly happen in your space. Think of it as a present to yourself! If you do pursue John's drawing, I would recommend moving the sink closer to the breakfast room end of the island. That way you would pull the items out of the frig, pivot to your prep area, rinse and start prepping on that corner before pivoting to your cooking area. I lived with that kitchen design for 12 years and it is more of a one person kitchen than two person design. Especially if you are opening the oven and dishwasher at the same which happened to us every Christmas Day as we were trying to clear the counters of all the dishes so we would have a place to carve the turkey while we were finishing preparing the rest of the meal!

I made a little picture and wrote the colors down trying to visualize... if they white's are too off they might look clashy. ?
I would probably do the almond color and darker khaki stucco.

I've always liked the darker khaki/gray windows myself. I think they look classier but without a picture of your house, I'm not real sure!

White does seem like it would be stark if you don't want white trim. The almond would be nice if it's not a yellowish color.

If your trim is between the window and the house stucco, I think having the darker windows would look nice. The lighter trim will highlight them, but if the window color coordinates with the house color - not that they have to be the same khaki - it should look nice.

In my area, alot of the upper end homes have the taupe/gray windows especially if there is brick on the home. The mortar in the brick is that khaki/taupe color. Is the darker window similar to a taupe/gray color?

This is our old house.

One stipulation we had before we would agree to build was that our windows be upgraded to another color besides white. There were too many other white windows in the neighborhood as they were standard.

As you can see by the hideous bright, white garage door (we were always meaning to do something about that, lol), if you don't want the stark contrast, you're not going to be happy.

Our recent builder had a 'take it or leave it' package that only had white as an option...which I guess wouldn't make it an option, after all. :)

Yes, that makes sense..the problem I'm having is our windows will be on both the stucco part and the brick. On the front of the house, the windows will only be on the stucco. We want to go with a khaki stucco, but aren't sure if we should go with the white window or almond window.

I wouldn't rush this decision because this is not only very expensive, but will have a huge impact on what your house looks like, not just the exterior, but the interior as well. If you go with the almond windows, what will you do with the interior trim throughout the house? White and almond clash. If you don't care for the white, better to go with driftwood.

I've been through a remodel. They will always rush you and tell you you need to decide TODAY, but it is OK to stop work and tell them you need to think about it. Best thing is to drive around your neighborhood and see what similar houses have done. Take your camera along and snap pictures to find your "inspiration" house. You can always repaint your stucco if you want a change. Not so easy to change window color.

In my opinion, white is classic, will always be style and will compliment any window trim (both inside and out). But, it's not my house....

See if you can find windows that have one color as the exterior and other color - paint or stain - on the inside.
