and it decided to hang out near our feeder all day! A painted bunting.

Is that a cardinal in the background Joan?
I think the only pretty birds we get up here is Goldfinches and Blue Jays....and we won't see them for a long time yet.

Those trees used to shade that complex, and I'm sure the tenants appreciated it during the summer. They'll probably have tufts of twigs at the ends of those stumpy branches for a long time now. That will be interesting to see!! How do I find the City Forester? I know Texas Parks & Wildlife used to have an Urban Forester, I heard him give a talk about the urban forest once, but have no idea how to get in touch with him, there's no link on the TPW website. A search for "urban forester houston" yields a landscaping company. Way to go, Ken. private means private, even if what they do is butchery. God forbid, they should cut them out and replace them with Bradford pears, though! I found a city ordinance that regulates the planting of street trees, but I think these are a bit too far back to be street trees. And I learned that the city of Houston requires each new house to have one street tree in the front yard, and it can be a new tree or existing tree. Wow, I had no idea. I have noticed that the landscapers usually stick a small live oak in the yards of new houses, even if the yard is the size of a postage stamp. I can just imagine the damage to foundations and driveways when those trees get large. The tree canopy will be larger than the yards. Very good, Ghost! Thanks! Hello all Every year I grow Red Oak from seed.I try to choose straight tall trees to collect from.Then in recent years I only keep the best 2/3rds of each years crop.I am planting them in a 20 year old plantation where trees have died and enough sunlight hits the ground.There have been several trees that get about 6-10 feet tall then pour on the growth some 5-6 feet per year.Some flop over,and it may take a year or two to form a new leader but in the process strenghten the trunk.Others that grow that much don't put on as much growth the following year. I am trying to grow tall straight trees for lumber,on a lawn I can see where it may not look so good.If you stake try to remove the stakes after a year or two,or you could try cutting the leader back,just before the bend in the flopping leader.The tree should form a new leader from the first strong bud.That way you wouldn't have unsightly stakes.Do this when the tree is leafless to avoid disease. This is how I would do it.just my opinion. lp

I see similar leaves every year and do not know what causes them. My plants seem to get affected after a sharp drop in temperature after some very hot days. They always continue to grow and produce. The weird leaves may only last for 1 or 2 branches then return to normal. As the deformed leaves grow in size they often get more and more normal looking. Acid rain? Air polution? Herbicide drift? I don't know but I think you will still get tomatoes, at least I did for the last 3 years with plants that developed leaves like the ones you posted.

Gosh, Konrad wish my red breasted nuthatches would use a nestbox! Every year they try in a dead tree and it seems every year they get booted out or have a failed nesting. Their first attempt this year was thwarted by a House Sparrow trying to take over their cavity they dug way up in a dead Poplar tree. Then a woodpecker made it larger. Then they moved to the other side of the woods and tried again. Not sure what might have happened there but I haven't been seeing them anymore so who knows. I know my Dees natural cavity nests always fail due to Red Bellied Woodpeckers. This year my Dees nesting in my birdhouse, yeah! Do you have a special house for the RBNH's? I also have Orioles building nests in my woods. We usually have two to three families around the yard.

Yes, a cardinal. Yep, Liz, here in the Ocala National Forest. We have black-oil sunflower seeds. He was mostly eating off the ground, but was kind enough to do some posing for me.

I don't know what they are and the only time I have seen them was in a dream I had several nights ago......they were in my kitchen.
Beautiful birds and just to eerie to see them in a photo after my vivid dream.

It does look like a painted bunting with the exception of the head, which is usually a bright blue. The females are kind of an olive green.

He almost looks unreal!

I've never seen one. I googled to see if they are found here in Virginia. I found an instance of one seen in December, 2007, actually about 10 miles from me, which is the second one ever seen. Didn't give the date of the first one.

You are so fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time.

Let us know if he comes back, and maybe brings his mate.
