And, as you know-- patterned rugs hide all of the ills of the world! (Or dirt, anyway!) So, stick with a patterned rug, preferably w/o a ton of cream in it, and you will be fine!

I had a smaller entry than yours, and a rug that was about that size, and a stager told me to replace the smaller rug with a larger one.

Yes, a much larger rug will fill that space nicely (however, cover your beautiful floor as well). You might do some measurements and consider a runner. It looks as though your space is limited next to the commode. But I would definitely size it up.

I would go with something quite a bit larger. Do you have any other larger rugs in the house you can drag to this spot to get a feel for the size you need. You could even take a large sheet and fold into different sizes 4x6, 3x8, etc.

Too small rugs are one of my pet peeves. Your foyer will look wonderful with a good size rug. I think a 4'x6' placed horizontally to the door or a 5'x7' with the narrow end centered on the door would work well. Measure and mark with masking tape to see how it looks.

If you use an outdoor mat on the porch the indoor rug will stay fairly clean.

Yes. Pleeeeease get a bigger one. The easy way to figure out how big a rug needs to be: get newspapers/something-similar-you-have-on-hand and lay them out in the shape and sizes that you'll be considering. START AS BIG AS POSSIBLE. It will give you a wider (and probably more accurate) range of comparison.

The width of my entry way is 6 1/2 feet. My little table (purchased by my parents 35 years ago, lol) is exactly a foot deep. Do you think I could get away w/ 5x7 or should I start looking at 4x6?

ETA- another thought. Our family room rug desperately needs to be replaced as well, (slightly visible in the first pic) but I'm not sure I want to tackle that right now. The rugs do not need to match, right? As long as they compliment each other?

This is about what a 4x6 would look like.

A beautiful entrance rug is not really something that should be positioned to look like you are meant to wipe your feet on it. The size rug you have there now looks like an entrance mat. Put it outside on the porch and pull a larger rug away from the door. You could probably use a 4 x 6 or even larger if you pull it out into the transition between the entrance and that room it flows into.

I think you need to flip your orientation so that the larger side is facing the door

I think you can use a 5 x 7 in that space. See what it looks like positioned beginning just beyond the table a few inches in front of the door.

Disclaimer: I love rugs and don't think there can be too many of them on hardwood floors. For your house, not only would I have a larger entry-way rug, but I would have a runner perpendicular to it going by the stairway into the kitchen. And then as large a rug as you can afford in the family room. Leave about 1 foot of hardwood around the perimeter. All the rugs should complement each other and it will look fabulous.

Yes, you need a larger rug. Can you get a square rug to fit the space -- not wall to wall, but still square. If not, I like the look of the longer edge of the rug parallel to the door.

Like it or not, people will be wiping their feet on it, so get something that hides dirt, and is as big as looks reasonable. I have a mat on the outside and the inside, and it helps keep the dirt and scratches to a minimum. Your front door is beautiful, BTW.

I would not have chosen that pattern for your house, and I'm always baffled by the odd sizes. I think a true 5 x 7 will fit perfectly in that space.

I must be in the minority, because that large of a rug looks strange to me. What if it was turned 90 degrees (and sat under that little table?) Would it fit in that space without overflowing into other rooms? The current positioning looks like it cuts into some "walkways" or other rooms which would bother me. (Perhaps it wouldn't bother the OP or others, though.)

I think the colors work well, but is it returnable? If not-- no problem, but if it is, I think I would go with a smaller pattern, and something that complements but does not match the colors on the walls.

Oh yes, totally returnable!! I think it needs to be a smidge smaller... and there is not a drop of blue in my house while this rug has a few shades.

I do not want a rug in my walkway.... so I may need to look at 4x6s. The area is 6 1/2' wide so neither rug could be turned.

I also bought this one for $150 at HomeGoods. It is a 5x8. Too big but I do like the pattern. Thoughts?

I think you are going in the right direction! Yes, I would agree a little smaller size (to end about where the wall starts) would work well. I still think the scale of the pattern should be smaller, if possible, but it is very pretty.

A thought-- since you are changing a nearby rug, I would work that first so that you do not decorate yourself into a corner. An entry rug is easier (IMO) than a main room rug. :)

Even if you do not want to get the other rug(s) now, it would be good to have an overall plan in place if you do not have one yet.

Oh dear- the thought of making a decision on the living room rug stresses me out bc I want to make so many changes in that room... I really need to find a good neutral rug. Here's an aerial view of the room. (don't mind the big dog:) After reading the comments above, I think I need a much much larger rug in that space as well. Like 17x18.... and that's going to be hard to find.

The 4x6 rug shouldn't be that large of an investment so if I needed to change it again, I could.

So a 4x6 rug is much harder to find than I thought it would be. BB&B had none. (I had store credit & coupon so bummer) and HomeGoods had 1. I was shocked... unless I was really looking in the wrong place (they were not very helpful when I asked.)

So I came home with a 4x6 sisal rug for $70. I figured I might as well bring it home and check the size... and I think it's perfect.
However, I know nothing about sisal. Will this make an ok entry way rug. It rarely rains here but I do have a large dog and two young girls (fwiw.)

I think the size of the sisal is good! My taste is fairly eclectic, so I love the Costco rug. The pattern and colors have a nice "kick" to them; I like how lively, colorful & "springy" that rug is.
Have you tried Tuesday Morning? I have purchased several rugs there & have had good luck.

I like the Home Goods rug a lot! It is a little big bigger than I would pick in an ideal world, but I love the serene pattern and colors so much, that I would definitely keep that one.

The sisal one is fine--but very neutral and nothing special.

As far as the entranceway rug is concerned, I'm in the "turn it 90 degrees" camp. I would really like to see a rug that lengthwise (orientation: facing the door) fits from the staircase wall on the left to the step edge on the right, and widthwise, from the door to at least the edge of the staircase, but extends no further that piece of wall partition. Another option is to go with something large but neutral to fit the space (like the sisal), but then layer a smaller rug or mat with a stronger pattern that you like where the length equals the width of the door. That way, the smaller one catches most of the dirt/mud/whatever, but the larger one gives the space the correct proportions. It's also a possible solution for the living room.

And as far as the living room is concerned, I think part of the issue that you're having is simply from furniture placement. For example, I'll bet that the leather chair closest to the entryway door doesn't get used nearly as much as the other seats for two reasons: a) only the other leather chair is actually a comfortable talking distance from it, and b) people don't usually feel comfortable having their back to an entranceway. It tends to make us feel nervous; when I'm in restaurants, I sometimes find myself looking behind just instinctively.

Your living room has fantastic windows and a wonderfully chunky fireplace that's the right scale for them, but the other side of the room doesn't seem to balance it out. A bookshelf or similar kind of unit is a frequent solution, and if you found something with a deep base, then you could use it as closed storage space (for your adorable little girl's toys, perhaps?), and then use the higher shelves for display, or just things you would prefer out of her reach.

I'd also love another few shots from different angles inside of the living room. Right now, all I know on the one side is that you have a balcony above a green chair, but I have no idea if that wall partition is actually a full wall underneath it or just a support beam with a transition to another space.

I wonder if a 6x6 would work. There are 4'6' x 6'6 ovals too. I don't care for a longer rug with a blank area to the right of the door.

Another vote for the sisal. The others look too busy, imo. A sisal is still interesting, as far as it's pattern goes and it sets the tone nicely for the rest of your home.

Have you looked at Penneys online? I have gotten some nice rugs there.

I definitely prefer a rug turned with the longest side parallel with the front door. But it does look like a 4X6 wouldn't fit that way either. How wide is that area? I have a 4X5 that I got from Penneys. I'm wondering if you could find a rug that size and try it or try taping it out. I had a hard time finding one the right size too. They were either too big or too small.

A 4x5 might be a more pleasing proportion than the 6x6 I suggested. I think it's worth looking into for your foyer layout. You don't want to interrupt the path and opening to the living room though, with where the rug breaks.

I think a 5X5 sq or 5' circle might look good too depending on how wide your foyer is.

I vote for a round rug, set away from the door enough for the door to open with out hitting the rug. The diameter of 7 feet would fill the area, if a 4'X6' fits there now.
