GE 75 Gall Gas Water heater

I need to upgrade my 40 gallon to a higher capacity water heater. I know someone who has a water heater that was never taken out of the box (it is still shrink wrapped) and was stored indoors manufactured in 2004. would this be ok to install and use? does the warranty start on water heaters when they are put in use or from the manufacturer date?

depends if you buy from a store..warranty yes. or drop a BIG chunk off the price
if you can get a good price on it...but..a heater that big is gonna cost to run..

I was talking about the manufacturer warranty.

it will cost more to bring in a tankless water heater and retrofit my house for it...

I am just tired of running out of water in the shower using my 40 gallon water heater.

The reason we have 2 tankless heaters is so both of them are close to the point of use, which equals less wait time. I also drew our house plans to make sure my hot water use areas were "clustered" because of this. Due to the piping in our double wide, we have to wait up to 5 minutes for hot water from a tank heater. Ridiculous. I have played around with my parents' stuff and have never waited more than 10 or 12 seconds for hot water because their heaters are also near the point of use. Their and our tankless heaters are Rinnai, btw. The only instant hot water I have ever experienced was in a really nice hotel... ;-) I don't know how big our current tank is, but we often run out of hot water for our family of 4. if a shower is taken for 30 minutes.thay would be the 75 gallons of water.. sounds right but its not..the heater will actually give you only about 50-60 gallons of not water because the tank is filling with cold as you use the hot it is also mixing so..if you take a shower for 30 minutes you will deplete the heater, then it needs to reheat the water. but the next person jumps in the shower. he will get cooler hot water and less of it..it all boils down to the length of showers and how lon inbetween them. when your house was built a misunderstand of a water heater system happenrd instead of a huge heater seperat heaters for different baths would have been the way to go this is also the reason of your high gas bill you have a hugh vessal of water, the gas has got to keep that vessal at the temp you want it..every time you use hot water the heater has got to come on and heat up the water to thee desired temp. a larger vessal will cost more than a smaller vessal to keep warm.. my opinon..water heater to big...need to split the system upinto 2 systems,and..with the price of fuel.the way it is now. i suggest to switch to 2 50 gallon electric heaters AND the heaters get put on timmers. if you both work heater off 9pm-5am on 5am-8am off8am-4pm something like that the ages of your children also have a big factor in all of this. teen agers stay in the bathroom or on the phone i never thought i would be telling people to go with elec water heaters. but my fuel price went up ti $4.a gallon a few mths ago. went down..but i think it will go back up

Tankless or GE Hybrid water heater?

Hi, Can you tell us in what part of the country you live? Here's why: Hybrid units (heat pump) take heat from the surrounding air, "concentrates it" and uses that to heat the water. This works well if there is plenty of warm air around the unit that can be cooled (in the basement, garage, etc.) in a warm weather climate. It doesn't work well in cold weather climates where you are normally heating the area around the water heater. In northern climates where you are heating the area around the water heater much of the year, what you are really doing with a hybrid unit is using the heat from the furnace to heat the air that in turn heats the water... not ideal. If you have a low efficiency furnace or use expensive fuel for the furnace, you will not have gained anything with the hybrid water heater. Use a 92% tankless in northern climates and hybrid unit in southern climates. $3 a gallon sucks. If you decide to go tankless, be sure to size it properly and that your gas supply lines are large enough.

I'd really like to have sympathy for your situation... I'm just having a really hard time mustering it. A 70 gal "Asian soaking tub", like multi-head showers, are so wasteful it falls into the gluttonous category. You do have to think it all the way through. Don't install something like that unless you can do all of it. If you can't afford what it takes to make it work, then you can't afford the tub (or multi-head shower) It's like buying a Hummer and complaining about the price of gasoline.

Most will allow from 8-12 months from manufacturer date with proof of professional install invoice

Okay, can we take a step back for just a second?

Why are you running out of hot water? What are your needs?

What temp is your heater set to now?

How many people in your family who get ready for school/work at the same time?

Do you have multi- shower heads or a large tub?

How old is your current heater?

Heater was manufactured in april of 2005. my wife and I take showers back to back in the morning.

It is a hotpoint 40 gallon Gas water heater

the temp setting has no numbers on it but it has 11 tick marks. And it on position 9 of 11. 2 from the most high.

I do not have a multi head shower or a large tub but my showerhead has alot of pressure.

I don't want to talk you out of a water heater if that's what you want to do. However, a 40 gal heater should last about 20 minutes before you run out of hot water - based on 120 deg water, 105 deg shower and 2.5 gpm shower head. If either of you like showers longer than 10 minutes, really hot showers, or more than 2 showers back to back, a 40 gal won't work in your situation.

I suspect that you are moving more than 2.5 gpm through the shower head. The best answer is to measure it. Fill a 5 gal bucket for 1 minute from the shower. If you have more than 2.5 gal, you have found your problem.

How much in general would it cost a plumber to put in a 75 gallon water heater in place of my 40 gallon water heater? I already have a vent for it there. Plus the expansion tank is there. I would expect it would just be braising of the copper lines. I am about to get quotes but I wanted to know some budget numbers...
