cleaning question for pressure cooker/canner users

I've been cleaning the vent on my Presto cooker with a pipe cleaner each time I use it. Then checking to see if I can "see light" through it to be sure it is clear. Is there another tool or method of cleaning that would clean the vent better? What about another type of cleaning brush? What do you use?

OK, don't laugh....

Usually my vent is fine, I can see light when I hold up the lid and will just run hot water through it. But, I bought a package of three tiny brushes and the Wild Bird store, similar to a mascara wand, for cleaning the ports on hummingbird feeders. One (yet unused for birds) was designated to my canning supplies, it's a perfect fit.

Now see! That was the answer I was looking for!!! Yes, the pipe cleaner will clean a little, but I wanted something better as I use my PC almost weekly and felt I needed to get that crud off the inside of the vent. I even visualized a mascara wand but didn't know if I could clean an old one sufficiently to use it on the PC vent or where I could buy a new one.

Rats! Just tried a cleaned discarded mascara wand (who knew the brush was white plastic?) and it is too wide to fit down in the vent. Worth a try, though. Now I'm going to go look at my sewing machine tools.

That's what I figured. While I never noticed if the water in the canner was still boiling after a natural depressurization, I have seen the food boiling in the jars. Worries me that when I just tried PCing 2C of water in the electric one, it wasn't boiling after quick release. But they won't take it back - too late, had to have done it last night. Thanks for the link, I did read that this morning before DD had to go to Girl Scouts and I went shopping, it looks like I used too much water (only supposed to use 1.5x as much water as rice) and also may have done 1 minute too long (following the manual that said 7 minutes) if it doesn't take longer to cook more rice (I used 1.5C of rice and 3C of water, and not in a bowl - that's what I used for steaming but for PCing I just put the rice directly into the PC). But I got The Pressure Cooker Cookbook by Toula Patsalis at the library today, others coming on interlibrary loan so I will get this figured out. Hopefully the electric PC will work with the recipes (I won't use the manual) and will just need a little longer cooking time due to not coming to full pressure (?).

This is the bottom of the 18 qt, but it's the same. 8 inch raised section fits well on glass or coil round burner, not sure how it will be on your 6 inch (square). It will fit, but depending on how close the center of that burner is to the edge of the stove it will overhang just like your 14" stockpot does. I can't speak to whether you could set this centered between the burners which you said span 15" - it might not be stable and I don't know how 2 flames on the sides (lapping up the sides? Unless you can control just the left or right ring of each burner - I saw a camp stove like that, might have been at Northern Tool or Amazon) and cool spot in the middle would affect function, or whether it would warp. Be sure to ask the rep tomorrow.

No, they are not. It's a question of size. Pressure cookers are smaller. As a result, they heat up, and cool down, faster than a pressure canner. However, the heat up/cook down times are factored into the directions for any particular canning recipe. If you can in the pressure cooker the food will be underprocessed, and possibly unsafe. The bottom line is, you can cook in a pressure canner, but canning in a pressure cooker is not recommended.

To answer your question about a pressure COOKER - I still have an old one, which is about 4 quart size. It is made by Presto also, and can be used to pressure cook meals - like roasts, etc., that take a long time to cook otherwise. It is an oldie - but seldom used now, because of other cooking methods, which I find tastier in the long run. It is still used as a cooking pot and makes a great rice steamer. I wash/rinse about 2 cups of rice a few times, then cover with water in this pot, bring to boil for a minute or 2, until water is below rice. Then turn off heat, cover with the lid and the weight, let steam for about 10 minutes. Works great, although not a rice cooker especially, I find it works well for that purpose, besides being handy for cooking potatoes or other veggies. It has the same weight that Presto uses on some CANNERS that Presto makes, and the one I have. In that way, if I lose my CANNER weight, I can use the COOKER weight as a substitute. However, having said that, I recently purchased the newer weight that can be disassembled and used as a 5-10 or 15 lb. weight - so nice for PRESSURE canning, and great for more accuracy. I think it's called 're-purposing' ;)

If you don't have a wild bird store and don't find anything in your sewing supplies, they look like this and are on Amazon, Ebay, lots of places. Brand 'Droll Yankee' but probably other makes too with as popular as hummingbird feeding is...

I use my dental Waterpik to blast it clean.

The waterpik can also clean the safety valve, which is very important to do.
