artificial Christmas tree; Frontgate? Balsam Hill?
Comments (93)Geeze, all this so it's "easier" to put up? Easier than what? Building the Pyramids? I get a fresh tree each year. I buy it from a nearby garden center, take my stand to them, they put the stand on, deliver the tree and set it up. They also move a table for me to the garage. All this for (including tree price) is about $140 for an 8 ft tree. I like a LOT of lights on my tree and I cannot do this by myself, so I hire a woman who charges me $50 to put the lights on. Then the grandchildren come and put the ornaments on the tree. Around New Years, DSIL and the boys come and untrue the tree, remove lights and wind them back up neatly, and then take the tree out to the curb and bring my table back into the LR. My allergist told me that if an artificial tree is not carefully covered, it must be dusted very thoroughly when put up - each branch and all the needles - or it's going to cause the allergic person in the house just as much trouble. He said that most tree allergies are actually an allergy to the stuff the tree companies spray their "cut in Aug" live trees to make them stay fresher for a longer time. If one finds a fresh cut tree with no spray on it, allergies should not be a problem. Now THIS is easy!...See MoreHow do I get a real Christmas tree smell with an artificial tree?
Comments (31)Wow -- I want to thank everyone who recommended Thymes' Frazier Fir diffuser. This is our first year with an artificial tree and I really missed the smell. Knowing GW, I did a search and found this perfect thread (!); going to the Thymes' website I found a local (I mean a seven minute drive, door to door) charming shop I'd never seen before. It was incredible! And for whatever reason, they sold it to me for $30 (it should've been $60); I protested but they said "no, that's the price." So I bought a few other bibelots to ease my conscience (and it wasn't hard because it was one of those incredible shops where you want to just move in!). Right down the street from this shop a man was offering hay wagon rides, so my four and two year-olds, husband and I all hopped on and had an incredible ride around this sweet and historic downtown. Then we found an outdoor skating rink, so we rented some skates and pulled each other around. On the walk back to our car a man was handing out homemade candy canes from his candy shop. My four year-old loves candy canes! And all of these wonderful things happened to us today because the generous people here on GW shared Thymes Frazier Fir diffuser. So now I have this gorgeous smell, know about this wonderful local shop, and had a wonderful, serendipitous Saturday. Thank you!...See MoreBalsam Hill tree questions

Comments (9)Reasonably, but it's definitely been reported and does happen, and makes the paper multiple times every season. :-) I've never actually been certain if the PSE is trolling us with a "low-risk" assessment while claiming the lantern fly is also hiding in every nook and cranny and demanding we soldier our properties and destroy the things. I have a back wall covered every year, I sure wouldn't use a tree I got from my own back yard, let's just put it that way, unless I'd inspected it myself and removed the eggs that are probably there. Personally, I probably wouldn't be overly concerned. But if buying a tree from PA, I'd also inspect it for visible (they're quite visible) insect eggs first, stuck to the trunk. Just remove them and you're fine. Even if you do miss a few, like Christine notes, they're attractive insects, and as I noted, harmless. Just...large and pretty energetic. A few won't bother you or harm anybody. Thousands are just...disgusting (but still won't harm anybody). Now my own personal story does include a tree infested with ladybugs. This...doesn't sound too bad, until you realize...indoors. December. Dying everywhere. After that, my parents got an artificial and, once I bought my own home, I carried on the tradition and never got a real one to begin with because that memory was just that unpleasant....See MoreCFuller
