Anyone use DE in pet food for worm control?

I know farmers add Dietomacious Earth to feed as a natural wormer, but haven't heard of it added to dog food. Does anyone do this and is it effective? Our dog is wormed once a year, but is constantly snacking on nasties outdoors. I am quite sure worms are in her system.

If you use Heartgard, Interceptor, Sentinel, or ivermectin for heartworm prevention, they control most intestinal parasites. A good flea preventative like TopSpot or Advantage will keep out the tapeworms. So most dogs don't need additional intestinal parasite control. If you are worried, have a fecal sample analyzed every 6 months and treat as needed. My Aleksander is almost 10 years old, always on Interceptor, gets a fecal once a year, and has never had problems, despite his snacking.

Muenster (sp?) Milling makes organic pet food, & I think they include DE in their products.

A local organic radio program, The Natural Way, on 820 am radio on Sunday mornings, advocates adding DE to pets' diets at the rate of 1% by volume.

Tanya, if the email remark was intended or me then no I did not receive one. I wish to apologize for anything I have posted here to offend anyone. I had an extremely long day with lots of pain and I was tired both emotionally and physically. but that is no excuse for being negarice or hurtful to people. I do not wish to create problems so I am going to leave the forum and stay out of things. susieeg54 back in 2005, I established and ran a website (scamdetectors.com, no longer functional) for the sole purpose of warning the public regarding fraudulent and misleading business opportunities and other scams. At that time, people weren't aware of how to put those running such endeavors out of business, but thanks to getting them organized and learning where and how to file complaints, various states' attorney generals, the FTC and DOJ have aggressively moved in recent years to protect the public and have put these people out of business and into prison. And based solely on sbryce's initial reply, it sounds like that's what you're most likely involved with. So do some research on "Operation Bottom Dollar" and Operation Lost Opportunity" to see what people recently charged and convicted in those cases did. And if any of that applies in your situation, I'd bring that to Mr. Monroe's attention and request a full refund. And if he doesn't do that, you can file a mail fraud complaint, which will be investigated and then referred to the FTC, who will then refer the case to the DOJ for criminal prosecution if he has violated the law (which he did if he didn't provide you with the required documentation regarding actual "realized" (and not just "potential") profits as referred to in the 11/15/12 news release regarding the most recent actions taken in Operation Lost Opportunity). Thanks to the way websites are archived, you can also learn a lot about fraudulent business opportunities at this link to my former website. Fortunately, most of the individuals involved in those fraudulent business opportunities have entered into plea agreements or have been convicted, and are now paying restitution, in prison or awaiting trial and/or sentencing. So I was truly surprised to see that anyone, especially after previously being shut down, is still offering anything less than a legitimate business opportunities since it will most likely eventually put them in prison. Please let me know if you need additional information or help and I'll be glad to do what I can in that regard; even though I no longer maintain the contact I used to with state and federal law enforcement agencies and there's now a lot of information available on the FTC website about filing fraudulent business opportunity complaints. And I wish you well in your vermicomposting endeavors--it's lots of fun, and with time and patience, probably has the potential to supplement your income a bit; though it sounds like your initial investment was a lot more than necesary. Cheap source for worm cocoons... anyone use them?

eaglesgarden: unless you are going to keep them indoors, I'd skip the cocoons this year. They'll hatch in your outdoor bin, but they probably won't mature before the first freeze. Even if you take measures to insulate and feed your outdoor bin over the winter, I think starting with a pound of worms now will give you better results. There are reliable worm sellers offering worms for $32-35 per pound including shipping. One farm offers a half pound starter pack of bed run worms for $20 shipped, but I'm not familiar enough with them to know if they are reliable. Have you checked craigslist and freecycle for a local source? Do you know anyone who has an old compost pile or owns horses? The bottom of an old pile of manure is almost sure to have red wigglers. I'm not familiar with the worm farm you mention. I like that they ship the cocoons with a fair amount of vermicompost. Their list of advantages to starting with cocoons is reasonable. Pet food recall--- Are all these foods actually the same?

I used Iams for over 17 years - then the dogs didn't seem to do so well on it any more. So 1.5 years ago I switched to Nutro dry kibble. In the month or so before the wet food recall, I noticed my dog's coats weren't as nice, they vomited on/off yellow frothy stuff, and they avoided eating it until the last moment before we went to bed. Sometimes I had to encourage them with people food on it. These are dogs that are 12, have always willingly ate dry kibble, live indoors with us, and never over eat. The vet and I attributed it to hunting dogs doing what they like to do on our long daily walks (we live in the middle of nowhere, where there are many tasty temptations on the trails). Then around the first part of March, one of mine had violent seizures for the first time in her life at age 12. There is a family history; her brother has mild seizures 2-3 times year. so mild we don't medicate for them; and I know they can spring up at any age, so truly that is the most likely answer. However, that day I stopped feeding the Nutro, and began home cooking cold turkey. That strange vomiting with both dogs ended that day (despite the fact I thought switching to such a rich home cooked diet would cause some upset). Coats sleeked back up in short order. Please knock on wood for us, but no seizures yet (I still am reluctant to connect that to the food, because of the dog family history, but need to put it out there because I do think there is something less than fatal in this food that was at the least causing the vomiting/tummy upsets. My girl had a cluster of 6 in less than 24 hours, and it took days before she was "normal", ie pacing for hours, some vision issues, couldn't sleep, wobbly legs, etc.) It was a nightmare. Then I heard about the wet food recall. I thought I was a food snob. I did ask questions, but 1) how can I know if I am not told truthful answers re QC and ingredient issues, and 2) frankly, accidents like a bad batch of X can happen - to both pet and human grade food. I don't know what to think now, except that if commercial wet food has issues with rat poison, plastics poison, god-knows-what-else is still in it that is causing problems less than death in it, too much Vitamin D (the Royal Canin lawsuit, which btw, I had tried the cat food years ago and it was simply awesome at the time, but still, they screwed up)... well, I can guarantee that as a home cooker, I can be more careful than that. I am just lucky that I can make the time to home cook - what a burden that would be in other circumstances for a lot of people. The cat would be harder to do a good home job with; so I am trying Felidae dry kibble. P.S. The store and Nutro were very stand up about taking our returned sacks of dry kibble for full credit.

Do NOT use DE for swimming pool filters! You want the stuff sold for organic gardening. The pool filter stuff has been heat-treated to make it a harder, sharper, and a better filter, and it floats in the air and may irritate your lungs. (Dont' get hysterical - like many things, it takes repeated exposure to *maybe* develop a reaction. I load DE in my pool filter about 5 times per year, and simply use a decent dust mask. Chill.)

I was not able to find any reliable double-blind studies so I have no opinion if DE is effective or not.

Here are two sites that list positive first-hand experience with DE as a de-wormer AND have done at least some minimal studies to back it up. The DE seems to be at least as effective as the chemical de-wormers for some parasites.

There was great evidence that Fossil Flour had little effect on Tape worm.It is however very effective against Large Ascarid and other Micro skinned internal parisites.Tougher skinned and segmented worms are able to survive through Diatomaceous attack.Fossil Flour actually works by nicking the membrane of worms and leaving them exposed to digestive juices which convert them to a protien source for the host.

The page below for dogs/wolves states the DE should be administered for at least 60-90 days to be effective and break the parasite cycle.

Yes, people took DE in a glass of water to control intestinal parasites, and it is not as effective as the products out nowadays which target specific parasites, and get rid of the problem in no time. Measuretwice is absolutely correct, never use DE which is formulated for pools for anything but pools. It contains alot more chemicals which are not good for anyone or anything but pools. If you get DE, ask your local nurseryman for a source. I know you can get it online from some of these organic places. Be careful when dealing with it, you dont want to inhale any of it. Make certain your animals dont inhale it either. Bags of DE are sold in pretty big sizes, you probably dont want to just keep a bunch lying around. Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for.
