Worms don't like to be disturbed. OTOH, in a typical Rubbermaid tote system with paper bedding, the bedding at the bottom gets compacted and does not break down. What I suggest is to fluff the bedding as few times as possible to get the matted layer off of the bottom of the bin. In my two-tray system, I fluff everything twice in a six-month cycle. I fluff everything once after about 2 months to break up the matted layer at the bottom of the bin. At about 3 months I add a second tray and begin the harvesting process, which takes another 3 months. About half way through the harvesting process, I fluff everything in the lower tray to break up the compacted VC at the bottom of the tray. Other than that, the less you fluff the bedding, the more the worms will appreciate you. When the bedding is mostly processed, I stop burying the food, and only feed on top. When I feed, I cover the new food with a layer of fresh bedding. I takes about a week for the fresh bedding to absorb the water form the food below it. At that time the food is mostly eaten, and I add another layer on top of the last layer of bedding. When it is time to harvest, I stop feeding for a week or two to encourage the worms to move up when the second tray is added.

Don't feel alone, Glenda. I'm my Grandmother. Each spring we set clean concrete blocks up on end in a large flat area of the lawn. Then we moved the bedsprings and mattress out there and set them up on the blocks so they could "air." We'd dust and clean the bedsprings with Pine-Sol, dry them with clean towels, and let them set in the sun a full day, sometimes two. If they stayed out over night, we had to go out early and "dry" them off again. We'd "beat" the mattress with a broom, vacuum them, (both sides) and turn them so both sides were well "sunned." All the pillows got beaten and sunned, too. Quilts were either washed and sunned, or just sunned before being stored. This was done every year. Not because of bugs, or vermin. No bug every set it's hairy claw into my Grandma's house. It was done because that's what "clean, decent women and housewives did." I was looking at my mattress the other day, wondering what Wes would say if I asked him to help me carry it out for a "sunning."

[are they already cut off.. and in a plastic bag?? .. lol] you have been holding it in a pot???? .. if so.. thats the yellow issue ... probably lack of nutrients ... how did you protect the pot for winter.. was it in sun.. so the black pot froze and thawed all winter????? ken

Unscented. I have gone to battery powered candles for the most part. Don't care for fake smells like apple, vanilla, and such anyway, especially in candles. I have to hustle past the candle section in Bed Bath and Beyond as it's awful to me. I do have a few jar candles that were given to me that I like. Can't remember the fragrances at the moment and I'm not home, but they are clean scented. I burn them occasionally in the kitchen when cooking something with a strong odor (fish, Brussels sprouts for example) and it helps.
