Found a new (to me) British mini series

It is called Island at War. The setting is a fictional city in the Channel Islands and opens with the German invasion of their island in 1940. (same setting as the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society) I have only watched the first episode and it is very good. One of the actresses is Mrs. Bates from Downton Abbey. The reviews are excellent, but warns that the series ends without finishing all the story lines. The writer died! I am watching for free through Amazon Prime.

Cool, I filled a bowl with warm h2o and dunked it a few times and worked off the rest with a fork as korina suggested in another thread. I was able to get at least 90% of the peat off and hardly ruined any of the roots. I even put a wick on that plant! Thanks, I'll throw the plant in my empty 5.5 gallon aquarium that I use for starting various cutings. I laid down two leaves of each plant the day I purchased them. Those leaves are in a recycled container from my B-day cake! Come spring I'm going to be cramped with my veggie seedlings. These new plants sure help the winter blues, if you know what I mean. My new arrivals are sure going to like my old 10g that was previously setup as a terrarium for some dwarf ferns and some fittonia. Before that it was a fish tank with various aquatic plants. I did the hood myself and built the light system with parts gathered from HD's lighting section. When all else fails diy! Thanks for all your help. Rick. P.S. Andrei Scherbak I understand your option. I think your creation is lovely. It is only unsuccessful if you don't keep taking care of it. My problem with terrariums is that they are created to look beautiful for the moment,,,,they are not long term beauties once they start growing and one plant outgrows the other! lol I do have about 12 terrariums going. Each one holds only one plant because they are miniatures and cannot survive in my dry house without the added humidity. I use no moss, no pretty landscaping to accent their beauty, these are strictly functional. I don't want to plant them all together in one container such as a very large aquarium. This way I can address one plant at a time. All of my containers are very large clear glass jars that I have turned upside down, put the little plant on the inside of the lid and screwed the glass part on. The containers will not win a blue ribbon but the little plants are growing fantastically and that is my goal. Keep experimenting!!!! You will figure out what works for you eventually! Your terrarium looks good for display,,,,,,mine is strictly functional and would not look good as a single display. Different strokes for different folks!!!! Good luck. Rosie

I'll watch it if I can find it. Mum told a few stories, one of their duties was to kill rats. I guess they stole too much of the seed, she said it was awful having to do that, she's so not a killer. She can't really talk now, but I'll tell her there's a show about them, shell like to know that.

We've watched the first two episodes, and will watch the remaining two episodes this week. Hubs is enjoying it much more than I am, but he is very into history and I'm not. But, I can enjoy a good history show as much as he does as long as it's done well. This one is driving me nuts because it seems like it's 7 minutes of program, then 5.5 minutes of commercials, then 7 minutes of program, then 5.5 minutes of commercials, etc., etc. There was a big faux pas in one of the episodes. There was a political banner -- I can't remember exactly what it said, but it was something like "Vote for so-and-so for President" -- and the name of the person was someone who didn't run for office until a later time.

another one with robbie coltraine "cracker"..filmed in the 80's...( before we all think of him in harry potter)

.the usa version with another actor? a tepid attempt and failed...

My DH and I would never miss an episode of Prime Suspect~~we loved it. Helen Mirren is one of my all time favorite ladies of film!

I'm presently reading the "Potato Peel" book. The thing that interests me the most is the information about the German occupation. I never knew Guernsey was occupied. The other Channel Islands too? The nightmare that was Europe....

I might have mentioned this before. If you like WWII era shows you might like "Foyle's War" It's available on Netflix. I watched every season and loved every minute of it. I like that time period. I loved the characters. Check it out. You might like it.

AArrghh! I tried to find it on our TV, and it is not showing. You'd think with our one or two hundred channels that we would have it!

Sheila Joyce, Island at War is from 2004. You would have to find it through one of the companies like netflix or Amazon Prime. I loved Foyle's War! I was actually looking for the first Midsummer Murder which was unavailable when I found Island at War.

We enjoyed "Island at War". We find all of our Brittish series on DVD from our library unless we've recorded them off PBS. We're about to record "Mr. Selfridge's Store".

We finally got around to starting "Anna Karenina" yesterday afternoon -- what an imaginative, knockout production! Jude Law is Karenin. Keira Knightly (28) is Anna. Vronsky is played by a very young man of 22 (dull performance) . I spotted Michelle Dockery as a Russian princess. She plays Mary Crawley in "Downton Abbey".

I've never seen the dance steps performed at the ball where Karenina and Vronsky dance together. It sounds like a mazurka, but I've never seen these steps with all the hand and arm gestures. Anyone know?
