Some good news-Fargo/flooding

Just found out that because of freezing conditions in the area, the river has slowed down and it may not crest to 43 feet. But the specialist in the area says he and his people are walking the sandbags every 6 hours and are asking everyone to watch for leaks and contact them ASAP.

They said they still have aways to go to protect the city. there are still flooded basements and much damage which have not yet been evaluated.

Just keep all these people as we have several KT'ers in the are in your thoughts.

I think it peaked at almost 42 feet. The cold weather is helping for now. But they still face an agonizing wait. This weather will warm up here and there is much more water that will be heading in Fargo's direction.
They're still patroling the dikes and will watch carefully.
I think they are doing amazinly well right now though, because they had some devastating predictions as to how this would end.

Wow, this piqued my curiousity since I have an innate interest in fluvial geomorphology (the way rivers move) and I found on the NDSU website a wealth of information. I'm so used to our rivers, which on the West side of the Cascade mountain range, are usually incised within more mountain ranges and in areas that were carved out during ancient glacier flows. But it seems that in geographic terms, the Red River is a young river and it hasn't been able to form deep channels so it tends to spread out. I've heard of towns actually picking up and moving to higher ground due to so many flood events. I can't imagine a major metropolis like Fargo actually doing that, but I can definitely see how people might be calling for desperate measures, as it were, by seeing if the river could be re-routed. I'm wondering if diking might not be an answer?

Oh dear! It sounds like the water wasn't too deep. And they would have to be sitting in water for quite a while before they start to warp. You may have dodged a bullet, and I do hope so! Good thing they were elevated somewhat. Besides the recommendation of tarps and plastic I'd recommend an old fashioned pallet to keep them up off the ground. Did you take them out of the packaging yet and wipe them down? Don't blame yourself for using the washer. On the other hand you think your contractor may have been using the laundry sink as a contracting garbage disposal???? Wow, that's something I'm sure you're going to follow up on. Oh my goodness, what a beautiful, beautiful dog. I do love goldens. She looks like a wonderful friend. And your flood picture -- major ouch. Wish I could help you clean up or email you a cyber-casserole. Here's hoping the frustration and stress levels start to ease up. If you can get past that DW decision, that will probably help you feel much better -- sense of accomplishment and knocking something off the list. Keep that sense of humor going!

Trying to add more . . . but it's not working. I did, however, get about half of the photos to upload to Shutterfly. Most of the Flood 1 and Flood 2 Demo/Damage pics won't load at all, and Shutterfly lists the new restoration photos first with the 'Before' photos at the bottom.
