Thanks for posting this Kulagal, and I hope you don't mind if I add a piggyback question. I love this idea and would like to consider it for my kitchen also, but I'm not very tall. If those kind enough to pics would also say how they reach the books, I'd appreciate it. Do you keep a step stool nearby? I use my cookbooks often, so I'd have to be able to reach them.

I have no problem reaching the lower shelf, since it's only about 6 inches above my head, but I do use a step stool, which is in a very narrow cabinet beside the freezer, to reach the upper shelf.

I too would like to see what others have done with the space over their fridge....we are putting cabinet for baking pans, other light stuff. Cookbooks are going in shelves on side of island, very close to where they will be used.

I was just looking at these photos and having an anxiety attack over my twin fridge/freezer purchase. Do you like yours? I also noticed you don't have the trim kit. I like the idea of putting the cookbooks up there but think the trim kit would get in the way. My ceilings are 8' and I'm not sure how much room would be left above.

Louise, I have no complaints about my fridge and freezer set. We're quite happy with them, in fact. Let me know if I can answer any questions. Why are you panicking about yours?

Trailrunner has cookbooks over the trim kit on the Frigidaire set. Looks like she has higher ceilings, though. My alcove has 8 ft ceilings, so I think with the trim kit you could fit one shelf, and I think it would still be reachable without a step stool. (grabbing the bottom half of the books)

We are doing the same thing. It is not finished yet, so no photos. The shelf will be flush with the front of the fridge and the same width of the fridge (so not as wide as those posted above). It will have two shelves, which won't fit all of our cookbooks, so we'll have to prioritize. I will need a stepstool to reach the top shelf. There won't be any other cabinets above the fridge, just shelves.

Rhome - Just overthinking I think. I got a great deal on a set of Kenmore twins with Energystar rating and an icemaker in the freezer and jumped at the chance.
Now I'm afraid they will overpower the space. I really love the interior space they will give me - if only the outside wasn't so big LOL! It's nice to hear from someone who knows.

The really funny thing is I started looking at this thread because I liked the shelves above the fridge. I showed DH and he says no way - too messy looking - so we will get doors up there anyway.

Actually, I'm not usually an open-shelf person, and didn't initially plan any. But it's practical for books, I just don't have enough (yet) to fill both shelves...And I found that my neatly buttoned up kitchen wasn't very personal, so a place or two for a bit of display and a little controlled messiness can really add some warmth, and a more comfortable feel.

rhome I sure don't mind you sharing at all. Thank you for thinking of my space. We do have very tall ceilings...11 1/2 ft in the kitchen and the area in the pic of the Twins has a large skylight above so very open and airy. I use a step stool for the upper cabs and at 5'2" can still reach the books.

As for 'messy' to each his own. I use my kitchen it is not a show room :) c

Sorry - I should rephase - DH thinks I will be too messy and he is probably right. He is constantly strightening things and putting them away (read: shoving them in drawers so I can't find them) I like things displayed - I even suggested I might actually use the cookbooks if I saw them more but he likes everything behind closed doors. Open shelves drive him nuts.

Maybe if I get a different DH ... but thats even more expensive than a new kitchen! LOL

Seriously, he hasn't asked for much with this remodel - I have been given almost free rein within our budget, so I think I can accomodate this request.
